[Lucien] I didn’t stop to look back. Glass sliced through my skin, Violet’s weight shifting across my shoulder as I landed hard, boots skidding against the pavement. Another gunshot sounded behind us and I felt the pain in my back. Dammit! I grunted but didn’t fall. Instead, the situation pushed my muscles to tighten and I shot forward, teeth clenched so tight I thought I’d split a molar. I barreled into the street, ignoring the gasps, the humans parting around me like water. Despite their stares, no one dared stop me. Violet stirred weakly. “You can put me down now…” I growled.
