“What’s happening?” she asked timidly. “Who is that man?” “We don’t have time for that. You need to go. Wait for me…” “What if you don’t come?” Maya bit her lip. “I will. I promise. You stay there until I do. Got it?” Her sister said nothing. “Sara, you got it?” “Got it.” Sara’s voice was almost a whisper. Maya kissed her on the forehead and then helped hoist her up to the height of the window, where Sara unlatched the lock and swung the pane outward.
