EKON POV
It has been almost half an hour since I got here and informed my idiotic friends of my arrival but, they have not showed up till now. I see women batting their eyes trying to catch my attention but all of it is just getting on my nerves. The issue with my mother earlier this evening still eating me up inside. A cunning and seductive blonde with skimpy clothing made her way to my booth and situated herself beside me. I glanced at her from the corner of my eyes wishing she would get my disinterest and move away but knowing this kind of women, I knew that she wasn’t going to take the hint. I order myself another glass of whiskey on ice a waitress walked pass me.
She brought her shoulders inwards with a slight slouch of spine to give a seductive approach, she gave me her full view of her breast bump and deep cleavage. My opinion, she did not even have to do anything as her black sheer dress had a plunging cleavage allowing the viewer to have a full view from the top of her globes down narrowed down to her navel leaving only a small part of her breast and n****e covered. She placed her hand on my thighs and ran the length of it, “Like what you see?” she purred in my ear. I turned to look at her with coldness. She flinched slightly than quickly pulled herself together and trailed her hands higher up my thighs.
I held her hands tightly and squeezed it painfully causing her to let out a loud whimper. “Stay away from me” I gritted at her. She nodded her head quickly tears brimming her eyes. I threw her hands towards her and brushed away imaginary dust off my pants as she ran way on her impossibly high heels. The waitress placed me dink down giving me small smile and left. Clearly, she witnessed what happened earlier.
I was lounging with my second drink waiting on my friends while enjoying the ambience when a soft voice comes over the speaker. The sound of her voice alone caused a drop in my heart. A sudden discomfort within me. She was singing ‘Everything I do’ by Bryan Adams. Her voice was as smooth as silk as she strums the guitar but there was an unknown strength, an unsaid sadness. in it. A strength waiting to be unleashed and discovered. The sadness concealed tightly within her voice. Her voice giving my mind its space of comparing it with a bird. No … an angel. There was just something in her voice that tugged at my heart causing it to beat faster than usual. It feels like there was a soft call in her voice. A call towards… my heart? I placed my palm over my heart, tapping it lightly, hoping to calm its rapid beating.
‘It doesn’t make sense. She is just some random singer. It would be pre-recorded for all I know’ I chuckled inwardly listening to my own vexing thoughts. I shake my head briskly to clear these thoughts. ‘I must be imagining things.’ The calling of her voice causes warmth to seep through the depth of my stone-cold heart. “I must be going mad. It must be the alcohol.” I say to myself. I frown cause even that doesn’t seem to make sense. I usually never felt the effects of the alcohol until probably my fifth or sixth glass. Feeling uneasy about this unknown feeling and thoughts, I picked up my drink and was about to stand up when Owen and Mike make their way to me. At last.
Greeting them with a shake and a hug, I tuned out my surrounding and started conversing with my friends. They ordered their drinks and we shared our stories. I suggested a gateway for this weekend but Owen has already made plans with his fiancé, my sister Alice whereas Mike was taking the kids to visit his old man at the hospital. I let out a sigh at their answer and throw back my drink. Observing this, “Hey Ee, what’s up?” Mike asked with concern. I explained my mom’s visit and reason of a getaway. They stared at me a while longer before exchanging looks then laughed their hearts out at my state. Glaring at them for a moment before I ignored them.
“Ee, I don’t think what your mom said was wrong but please do not and I mean DO NOT EVER marry Becca. She is a slut and I know that you don’t need my input on her cause you probably already know.” Owen says with disgust and rage. I barely nod to acknowledge and confirm his statement. “Anyway, if that really happens then THAT will be your worst nightmare bro.” Owen said with a slight hint of malice pointing at me. “I think you should start meeting people and fall in love bro. You know wh-“ I interrupted Mike’s advice before he could go any further. “Woah. Back it up man. Love? Seriously? Nah. Not happening. Not in a million years.” I tell him dismissively. “Fine man. Let it be but you never know when love makes its way to the heart and when it does it will only take a split second for your heart to recognise it. At the moment of realization, I want you to repeat what you just said to me to yourself.” I ignored Mike’s speech and divert the conversation to a more general topic.
After going back and forth between us, an enjoyable silence prevailed upon us allowing me to tune into my surrounding and the angelic voice from earlier slithered its way to my ears singing Rihanna’s ‘We found love’. Again, the same tug and rapid beating of my heart seem to reboot my weird thoughts and feelings. I listened to it for a while trying to figure out the significance of the voice. Before I knew it, the song came to an end and the DJ was thanking the singer for her rendition. I quickly stood up and made my way to the railing looking over the dance floor towards the stage below to get a glimpse of the singer.
All I could see was her dark curly strands of hair gracefully framing her face as she takes a bow. I could make out her petite form clad in the black shirt dress she wore along with her calf high boots though she kept her head low at most times. Like she is hiding away. Something that contradict her confident singing moments ago. As she turns to walk off the stage, I caught a glimpse of her doe eyes that caused my sharp intake of breath that filled that unknowingly filled the void in me by a fraction. As I was about to study her features, everything started to move faster than I could process. Before I realise it, she had turned her back on me and was walking towards the back stage and the void filled me again when I lost sight of her.
“This is it” I said to myself. I need to know who she is and how she could possibly cure the state of my heart.
