Chapter 5: The Man Who Can't be Moved

“Why did you save me again!”
Darren is driving me crazy! He foiled my plan to leave this world for the second time.
“You have no right to interfere in my business! You don't know what I've been through that I want to end my life!”
“You don't know what it's like to be someone who is only seen as a second option.”
I cried my heart out.
Let Darren judge me as he sees fit, I really couldn't control my emotions.
I hit his chest repeatedly. I vented my frustration on him.
Darren didn't fight back at all. He just looked at me with the same look in his eyes as seven years ago.
“Why did you let me live after I found out that I was just his hidden wife? No one knew of my existence. No one knew whether I was alive or not. Why did you save someone who was unwanted? Why!”
This time I could see the shocked expression on Darren's face.
“Do you regret it now? Come on, say something! Don't stay silent!”
I was hysterical as I let out all the hurt I had been holding in.
“Why did you come back after 7 years of disappearance? Why did you show up just to keep me alive to face this sad reality?”
I cried until my eyes felt hot. And Darren was still faithfully looking at me.
When I stopped crying and calmed down a bit, Darren hugged me. He rubbed my back gently.
“I'm sorry.”
My anger was reignited. Because he was the one who made me experience all of this. Darren broke the promise he made.
“Why did you promise to save me that time? Why didn't you really come? I should have known you just wanted to play me.”
“I'm sorry that I wasn't there that time. I'm sorry for not taking you away from there. You can use me as your tool until you're satisfied. But I had no intention of playing you, Eve. I love you. From then until now, I still feel the same way about you.”
I laughed, laughing at his stupidity and my own.
“You regret that we broke up without any clarity? So now you want to make up for it by saving me?”
“Why do you still love me? There are many women out there who would want you. Why are you still waiting for me?”
I pushed Darren's body so that our hug separated.
“I can only love you. You knew my hardships and you stayed with me back then. I waited for you because I still love you. Live with me Eve. I will make up for all the heartache you've experienced.”
“When Ethan's family came that time and asked me to marry Ethan, you should have taken me away! But what happened? I waited for you but you didn't come and the deal was done. My father agreed to marry me off to Ethan because I could pay off his debt. He didn't believe me anymore when I told him I already had a lover because you didn't show up!”
I still remember the anxiety and fear I felt back then. As I waited for Darren to show up to prove to everyone that I had a boyfriend.
Unfortunately, Darren didn't show up and everyone assumed I was just making excuses.
Darren grasped my hand gently. His eyes looked at me intensely.
“I tried to come that day Eve. But on the way to your house, a group of people beat me up. They took me to an abandoned place and locked me up there. They threatened me not to come near you again because if I didn't, they would hurt my family.”
Darren's eyes glazed over.
“I'm sorry, Eve, I was too scared. I didn't have anyone to rely on at the time other than myself. I was a coward back then.”
I couldn't believe Darren had tears in his eyes. He cried in front of me for the first time.
“I'm sorry to tell you the truth, but it was your father who ordered that group of people to prevent me from coming. It was only some time after the incident that I had the strength to find out what really happened. Your father doesn't like our relationship.”
I didn't know what other shocking things I would hear. Everything came at once and it was as if it wanted to kill me slowly.
“Where is my father? Are you hiding him because he had people beat you up?”
“That's not true Eve. I had no idea of his whereabouts until now.”
I took a deep breath.
“Then who was in the photo with you? Who were they? Why did Alice say they were your parents?”
Darren looked at the framed picture.
“They're my adoptive parents, the ones who made me the Darren I am today.”
That answer was enough for me.
At least now I knew that my father might still be alive and that the police were right in saying that he was just running away.
“Open the door, I want to leave your house. You can't keep me here because you saved me.”
Darren held my hand.
“Please stay here. Stay with me.”
“Why on earth would I? You've kept so many secrets and you'll probably end up like sweet-mouthed Ethan at the beginning.”
Darren hugged me back. He held me very tightly.
“I'll give you everything you didn't get from Ethan. I'll be your home, the place you lean on, the place you come home to. I won't hide you from the world. I will be proud to introduce you to the whole world that you are my woman. So please live longer, your life is precious.”
Darren's words brought tears to my eyes.
“I won't break my promise this time. Trust me, give me a second chance, Eve.”
I was angry at Darren and hated him because I didn't know why he broke his promise. Now that he had revealed the truth, I didn't know if giving him a second chance was possible or not.
“You don't need to love me right now. Heal the hurt you feel first. I will wait for you until you can love me. Until that time comes, I'll repay the pain you felt for Ethan.”
At first, I didn't intend to repay Ethan because I felt alone and worthless. But it turned out that there was someone who considered my presence in this world as valuable.
I had a reason to live again.
“You deserve to be happy, Eve. I will destroy Ethan because he hurt the person I love the most. Ethan has ruined your life and I want to make him regret it.”,
“What do you want in return?”
I stared intently into Darren's eyes.
“Be my woman and stay by my side. Then I will make Ethan pay and I will give you the whole world, Eve.”
