Chapter 1: Backburner
EVE
“Oh my!”
I dropped an important file of my husband's.
Today was my husband's birthday and I had intended to surprise him.
My hands are full with gifts, birthday cake, and also the file he left in the home office.
I didn't tell him that I wanted to come because I was going to deliver these files to the company by myself. And this will be my first time coming.
Great Soul.
That's the name of my husband's company, a river cruise company. He's the CEO.
But the moment I set foot in the lobby, two guards approached me.
“Excuse me, who are you?”
I frowned as they didn't recognize their own CEO's wife. But then I smiled, trying to understand their ignorance since it was my first time setting foot into this office.
“I have some business with Ethan.”
“You mean Mr. Ethan? The CEO here?” One of the guards confirmed my words.
“Yes, Ethan Mars,” I replied confidently. “Are there any other Ethan names here?”
“No ma'am. It's just that we can't let random people into this office. Please understand.”
I tried to remain calm. I didn't want to reveal my identity as Ethan's wife first. I wanted Ethan to introduce me to his employees.
“Let me go inside to tell the receptionist about my visit. When Ethan knows I'm coming, he'll tell you who I am.”
It was already lunchtime. This was the only time Ethan was free during the day, so I wanted to go in quickly.
“This is my ID card, take it with you for a while. I'm not a criminal, so let me in.”
The two of them discussed for a while and then returned my ID card again.
“Alright, you can come in, but we have to watch you.”
It didn't matter, they could follow me because they might still be suspicious.
I went to the receptionist, looking forward to meeting my husband.
“What floor is the CEO's office at?”
The receptionist's reaction was the same as the two guards who stopped me earlier.
“Excuse me, who are you? Do you have an appointment with Mr. Ethan's secretary?”
I wanted to say that of course I hadn't made an appointment with my own husband. But I returned the question with a sweet smile. “I just need to know the CEO's room. Can you tell me?”
“Sorry ma'am, we can't let you upstairs if you haven't made an appointment.”
The receptionist gave the code to the two guards behind me so they suddenly grabbed both my arms.
“What are you guys doing!”
I was forced to shout because they dragged me suddenly. Even though I wasn't a criminal, I just wanted to see my husband.
“You're suspicious, we can't let you in.”
My patience finally ran out. I have to give this file and gift to Ethan myself, it can't be delegated because it's an important file, at least that's what it says on the envelope.
“I am the cousin of your CEO. I'm Eve Jaden Mars. Our surnames are the same, do I look like I'm lying? You've read it on my card.”
Finally, the two guards let me go. They immediately bowed respectfully to me and apologized.
I took a deep breath. I shouldn't have made a scene in Ethan's office, but I had no other choice. I had to lie too.
“Now may I know what floor the CEO's office is? I need to see Ethan because I have an important file to hand to him. This file cannot be passed on to anyone.”
The receptionist looked a little scared when she saw me.
“On the top floor, ma'am. But I'm sorry, Mr. Ethan is currently with a guest, he cannot be disturbed at this time.”
“Who's the guest?”
I could wait a little longer if the reason was clear, unlike earlier.
“Mr. Ethan's wife, ma'am.”
My eyes blinked a few times and I sharpened my ears.
“Ethan's wife?”
“Yes, Ms. Eva. Mrs. Tiffany, she came to surprise our CEO because today is his birthday.”
It was like a bolt of lightning had suddenly struck me. My head was spinning and my nose was burning.
Ethan's wife is me, Eva Jaden Mars, not Tiffany or whoever that woman currently in Ethan's room is.
I am Ethan's legal wife whom he married 6 years ago in front of a priest and witnessed by our family.
Yes, just our family.
I just realized that there were no other guests attending. Even though Ethan and his family are famous businessmen, no other guests came.
I'm really limp now. I didn't realize this oddity a few years ago. At that time I thought Ethan only wanted an intimate wedding because he didn't like greeting too many people. But now I knew the answer.
Ethan deliberately didn't introduce me to anyone in his life, either to his coworkers or maybe his friends as well.
So this was the reason the two guards and the receptionist didn't recognize me, because they only recognized Ethan's wife who I didn't even know who it was.
My heart ached because Ethan had been lying to me. He always had a reason to prevent me from coming to his company, at first I thought it was because he was very busy and afraid of neglecting me. But it turned out that he prevented me from coming because someone had already replaced me!
With shaking hands, I tried to contact Ethan. I wanted to ask him for an explanation.
However, only a robotic voice could be heard telling me that his phone was off.
At this point, I held back my tears so it wouldn't fall. I had no idea what made Ethan so busy that he ignored my calls. I don't know what he was doing with the woman he claimed as his wife.
“I'll wait in front of his room. I promise not to disturb him.”
I tried to convince the security guard and receptionist. I needed to see with my own eyes who the woman was that Ethan claimed to be his wife. I also needed to know how my husband would look when he saw me come to his office.
“Yes, ma'am. I apologize for interrupting you earlier, we really don't recognize Mr. Ethan's cousin.”
“Yes, no problem.”
It wasn't their fault, but Ethan's. He was the one who made me unrecognizable to anyone in his life. Even though I had introduced Ethan to everyone in my life, although not many, only my family and friends.
When the elevator reached the top floor of this building and opened, a secretary greeted me.
“May I know who you're ma'am?”
I took a deep breath and wiped away the tears at the corners of my eyes.
“Eva Mars, the legal wife of Ethan Mars.”
