Stark POV
The city was only an hour drive from our pack. My brother did most of the talking while he drove. He always reframed from talking about the past and our dad and leaves out mates. I know he wants to meet his mate. He's hoping for it when he goes to the academy.
Instead, he tells me about the games he's finished or about him and his friends.
I don't mind hearing about what he does because I am truly grateful that at least he is hardly home and that he is enjoying his life and basically living it the way he wants. Most importantly, he's safe. That's all I want for my brother the most, for him to be safe.
We soon parked in the parking lot outside a hotel, I raised an eyebrow at him, and he just chuckled and said, "Technically, I didn't lie to dad about meeting with grandma. She's staying here for a couple of nights. She wants a private dinner in her room. She knows you hate public places."
"Great." I mumbled, feeling satisfied about this so far. I was dreading the idea of going to a restaurant, I hate the stares. I know I will still get stared at here, but at least it will be temporary stares because I'll be just passing through.
My brother jumps out of the vehicle to grab my wheelchair from the back of the SUV. Then he brings it around to my side. I open my door and get into my wheelchair by lifting myself from the handle above the door frame.
My brother says, "Let me wheel you in, okay? We need to blend in with these humans. They would think I am rude for not pushing you."
I nod because I have no idea how to be around humans, and this makes good practice for me. After all, it is my first time in the city. My dad was very protective of our mother, that he had forbidden trips to the city, and if she wanted to go, he'd take her himself. He never let us go. As for my brother, I am surprised he knows this place.
As he wheeled me towards the entrance of the hotel, I asked, "How do you know the city so well? And the humans?"
He said blew out a breath as if to blow his hair out of his face as he said, "I came to the city to stay a week with Embry and his parents back when I was 13 ish. He invited me to come with them, because he didn't want to be the only boy. His parents stayed in the hotel just to get away from the pack and train their kids about the human world. Embrys father convinced dad that it would be a learning experience for me and that we'd be watched at all times. Then, I came here again at 14 with Embry again for his birthday celebration. Then again, when I was 15, Then as time went on, I came like a dozen times last year. Most times, I snuck out to hang out here with my friends. We didn't do anything major. We hung out in parks or went to the movies, bowling, or just got driven around by Embrys older brother, Nate."
Nate, or Nathan, was one of my best friends as kids, but my father had told him to stay away from me. He told all my friends to stay away from me, including the betas son, and my best friend who was like a brother to me, Calhoun, whom I called Cal.
It was extremely hard at the time for Cal and I to be separated. He used to sneak over to play cars or he'd bring me books. It was not until my father caught us playing together with cars. My father had to call his Beta, who is Cal's dad, to come get him. Father gave me my first brutal beating with his fists after that.
The next day, Cal snuck into my room and saw the bruises, and I told him to stop coming, and I told him that this was the result of being caught with him. He told me he was sorry, and he would not cause harm to me again by being with me.
It still hurts thinking of my old friends. All my old friends were, of course, Cal the betas son, Nathan the gammas son, and Brody the deltas son. All of whom I would have gotten to help me lead the pack someday, but that won't happen now.
"Sorry, but Nate did ask about you a lot." My brother admitted.
"Next time he asks about me, tell him I died years ago." I mumbled.
Rowan sucked in a breath, "I promise you, brother, we will get through this, you and me."
I nod, as that is one thing I believe in right now. I believe he will achieve his role as leadership and take over, and set me free. I know he will.
I stopped paying attention and just kept my head down and my hair in my face once we passed through those glass sliding doors. I would rather not see anyone.
In our world, an alpha and Luna are leaders in a pack, then we usually have the beta couple who are second in command and they help the alpha and Luna and sometimes cover for them the most. The gamma couples take care of training of warriors, guards, etc. The deltas travel a lot, for the alpha couple, in case a pack has business outside of our pack, they deal with them and do a lot of meetings, paperwork and report back to the alpha. Sometimes, the deltas also do spy work, undercover work. They also maintain the security of the pack. They constantly update the security systems. They also work closely with the gammas on security details for the alpha and beta couples in case they have to attend important meetings or gatherings for the pack. On rare occasions, the gammas take cover for the pack. Rarely do the deltas take cover, but they help the gammas.
However, some gamma males never find a mate. Instead, they become the Lunas guard, they grow a bond with the Luna. Rare cases where the bond between them forms as children, especially if the Luna grows up in the same pack. Some get mistaken as possible future mates but figure it out as they come of age. Some gamma males sometimes end up getting a mate at a later time, so the development of gamma bond and Luna bond would grow. Because of the delay of the gamma males gaining their mates, some never get them, some reject theirs and focus on the Luna.
All bonds that the goddess has created are meant to be sacred. My father was very protective, possessive of my mother so much so that he ended up killing his gamma the moment he met her. How do I know this? My father told me in one of his rages as he beat me and told me how much my mother meant to him as he blamed me for her dying to protect me. He wanted to be the only male to have that bond with my mother. That is how possessive he was of my mother.
The moment we stepped into my grandma's hotel room and Rowan had shut the door. My vision became blurry, and a ringing began to drown out all the noise around me. My head threw back as my upper body went rigged.
Oh, goddess, why? Why of all times did I have to go like this in front of them?
I could vaguely hear my grandmother's worried voice from a distance, and I could also hear my brother calling my name, and then everything went dark.
