Chapter One: Part 2 – Shadows in the Rain

325 Words
The city never slept, but tonight it felt different. Rain lashed the streets, turning neon lights into fractured rivers on the asphalt. Elena pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders, each step on the wet pavement echoing her exhaustion. Another late night at the firm, another stack of files waiting on her desk tomorrow. It was a life of routine, responsibility, and quiet desperation — one she had accepted long ago for her daughter’s sake. The glass doors of the office building hissed open. A figure stepped inside, and the room seemed to shift around him. Tall. Lean. Impossibly perfect. Black suit tailored to precision. Pale skin glowing faintly under the harsh lights. Eyes that pierced through the dim, red flecks catching the light like embers in a dying fire. “Elena Hart?” The voice was low, smooth, commanding. It wrapped around her, sinking into her bones. “I believe you have a file for me.” Her hand shook slightly as she handed it over. When their fingers brushed, it felt like fire — sharp, electric, and dangerous. Her pulse surged, betraying her racing thoughts. There was something about him, something she couldn’t name, something that screamed danger but also… temptation. “You work too hard,” he said, eyes lingering on her as if he could see past her carefully constructed walls. “Do you know how dangerous that is?” Elena’s breath caught. Dangerous? Was he speaking of her life… or his own? A faint scent reached her, subtle but intoxicating — cedar and something darker, metallic, alive. Her instincts screamed, but her body… it refused to move. “Some nights,” he whispered, stepping closer, “are meant for more than work.” The shadows behind him seemed to grow longer, the lights dimmer. Every instinct in her screamed to step back, to run, but she stayed. She had no choice. Not tonight. Not when desire had already found her.
