They say in ancient times a Goddess used to roam the earth among her children spreading love and prosperity. One day that all changed when a thief stole something he couldn’t return.
The Goddess was shunned for no longer having the power to help people going into hiding, never to be seen by her children again.
“And to this day, people still try to adventure on to her home that sits on the sands of the farthest beach.” I eyed the little sprouts sitting in front of me with awed faces and smiling eyes.
“Miss Laphanti?”
“Yes, Rupert?” Rupert was the smallest child I cared for, his mother gave life to him 5 weeks too early.
“Is the Goddess Kali real?” His pale blue eyes sparkled with curiosity. No matter his size he was going to be bold in his life.
“It is.” I smile widely at him until an older child intervenes.
“Don’t tell him lies Miss Laphanti! Kali isn’t real. My momma said the stories you tell are all just that, stories!” She glared at Rupert for believing in my tale then turned her beady dark brown eyes my way.
“The story is true Iris, it’s fine if you don’t believe them.” I gently pat her head and make my way to get their snacks. Thinking over the story my mother told me when I was their age I sigh.
I know you are real, Goddess Kali.
“Azariyah!” I startle awake hearing my father's voice.
“I’m coming!” I glance at the clock on the wall and pale. I was supposed to be awake and tending to the animal's ages ago! Hurrying on I bypass my father and get started on my chores.
“Goddess be, you better start getting your act together boy! You’ll be running the farm on your own soon.” My father shook his head as I remained quiet. He was leaving on business for a few months. It was supposed to better the farm, that is if I didn’t make a muck of it first.
Oh, Goddess help me, this is all my father has. I stared down at a sheep as I started sheering her wool. I always start first with my good old girl sally, she’s always the softest and never misbehaves when I’m working on her, but as I continue working in silence a gleam catches my eye. What’s that you got there billy? I scoop up my pink piggy and brush away the rest of his scraps.
How did this get in here?
I go to pick it up only to be stung and my finger clutched. It shifted to that of a scorpion, crawling its way up my forearm it circled itself and claimed its spot. I was stunned for mere moments before I started howling for my father.
“Pa! Pa! Help!” Before I could see if my father heard me I experienced the worst pain in my head. So brutal I fell to my knees. Sally nudged against me but I couldn’t even pat her side in reassurance. I blacked out. Only experienced a shivering pain erupting my whole body.
