Chapter seven

Julian's eyes scanned the message on Mia's phone, his jaw clenched in anger. "We need to report this to the police," he said, his voice firm. Mia nodded in agreement. She was shaken by the threatening message, but she was determined to see this through. As they walked to the police station, Mia couldn't help but feel like she was being watched. She kept looking over her shoulder, expecting to see someone lurking in the shadows. But every time, there was no one there. At the police station, they met with a detective who took their statements and promised to investigate the threatening messages. As they left the station, Mia felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was glad that they had taken action, and she hoped that the police would be able to catch whoever was behind the threats. But as they walked back to the office, Julian's expression turned serious. "Mia, I need to tell you something," he said, his voice low. "I've been doing some digging, and I think I may have found a connection between the embezzlement scheme and someone close to me." Mia's eyes widened in surprise. "Who?" she asked. Julian hesitated for a moment before answering. "My ex-fiancée," he said. "I think she may be involved in the scheme." Mia's mind was racing. She had suspected that Julian's ex-fiancée might be involved, but she had no idea that Julian had suspicions too. "What makes you think that?" she asked. Julian's expression turned grim. "I've been going through some old financial records, and I found a transaction that looks suspicious. It's a large payment to a shell company, and I think it may be connected to the embezzlement scheme." Mia's eyes narrowed. "Do you think your ex-fiancée is behind the threatening messages?" she asked. Julian nodded. "I do. And I think we need to be careful. If she's involved in the scheme, she'll stop at nothing to keep us from exposing her." Mia felt a chill run down her spine. She knew that they were taking a risk by investigating the embezzlement scheme, but she was determined to see it through. "We'll be careful," she said, her voice firm. "We'll work together to expose the truth, no matter what it takes." As they walked back to the office, Mia couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She had a feeling that they were getting close to something, but she wasn't sure what. When they arrived at the office, Julian went to his office to make some phone calls, while Mia went to her desk to start digging through some financial records. As she worked, Mia's mind kept wandering back to Julian's ex-fiancée. She couldn't help but wonder what had really happened between them, and why Julian's ex-fiancée might be involved in the embezzlement scheme. Just as Mia was starting to get somewhere with her research, her phone rang. It was Julian. "Mia, I need to see you in my office," he said, his voice serious. Mia's heart skipped a beat. What had Julian found out? She quickly got up and made her way to Julian's office. When she arrived, she found him pacing back and forth behind his desk. "What is it?" Mia asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. Julian stopped pacing and turned to face her. "I just got a call from an anonymous source," he said. "They claim to have information about the embezzlement scheme." Mia's eyes widened. "What did they say?" she asked. Julian's expression turned grim. "They said that the scheme goes all the way to the top of the company. And they're willing to meet with us to provide more information." Mia's mind was racing. This was big. If the scheme really did go all the way to the top of the company, that meant that someone high up was involved. "What do we do now?" Mia asked. Julian's eyes locked on hers. "We meet with the anonymous source," he said. "And we get to the bottom of this." Mia nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She was ready to take on whatever came next.
