Chapter 2: An Unlikely Friendship

I woke up on a soft bed on the ground. I groaned softly and shook my head. “Where am I?” I asked. Master, she’s awake!” a child’s voice rang out. “Good very good!” another voice rang. I looked up and saw the silver wolf that helped me escape standing there next to a grey wolf up. “Hey you’re the one who helped me escape from that cage” I said “Wait where am I?” who are you people?” I asked panic running through my whole body.

“Settle down or you’ll start to bleed again” the silver wolf said calmly but firmly. I laid back down watching the silver wolf work with the kids. “Meziku give her some more of that paste for her wound” she said to the grey pup. “Yes Master” she said grabbing the paste and adding some on me. “So what is it with you and the kids?” I asked, trying to make conversation. “Well is that way to introduce yourself to a stranger that may have just saved your life?” she asked. “Anyway I’ll answer your questions if you answer mine, sound like a deal?” she asked.

“Yeah sounds like a deal” I said. “I’m Rena” I introduced. “I’m Silver and to answer your question these kids are my apprentices” she told me. “How long have you been in this town?” she asked. “Um I’m not sure” I said honestly. “Oh yeah you’re the one who was stuck in that cage weren’t you” Silver said remembering. “Yes, yes I was” I said.

“Thanks for saving me” I said finally. She looked a little surprised then said “You’re welcome.” “Well, time for me to get going” I said getting up. “Aww do you have to go?” one of the kid apprentices asked, eyes wide with sadness. “Yes I have to go and find the Eye of The Island” I said. “Can’t you stay until your wounds heal?” Meziku asked. I looked at everyone even Silver.

“I’m sorry little ones I can’t stay” I said with tears in my eyes. “Good-bye” I murmured as I ran out of the cave. While I was running two men were spying on Silver and her apprentices. “Come on bro I don’t think she’s in there Domo” one of them said to the other. ”I know that but I don’t face the wrath of the boss man again remember what happened last time we screwed up Mick” he said, rubbing his head. I ran till I couldn’t run anymore that’s when I heard a loud boom and screaming then deathly silence coming from Silver’s cave. “Oh no not Silver!” I yelled running back to the cave.

“Silver!” I yelled, looking into the cave, coughing. The cave was destroyed beyond recognition. I started to scrounge around lifting rocks and other things that fell to see if anyone was under anything, that’s when I heard coughing. I swiveled my ears around to catch the sound again, this time I heard a faint moan. I ran to the sound where the moan was coming from. “Silver! I yelled moving the rocks and rubble away, only to find it was Meziku under the rocks. “Meziku!” I yelled.

I helped her out of the rubble. “Where are the others?” I asked looking around. “They took Silver and the others” she said between coughs. “Who could have taken them?” I asked myself quietly, pacing around. Meziku was sitting down, trying to grab what little she could from the blast. I was still pacing when Meziku dropped a bottle filled with a purple liquid. I turned and perked my ears up in surprise.

“I know who took Silver and the others” she said. “Who?” I asked. “Red-Eye” she said barely audible. I froze in place as I tried to remember who he was. “We have to go and save them” Meziku said. “Hang on a minute do you know where they are?” I asked carefully. “Yes I know where they are being held let’s go” Meziku said without another word she ran out the cave.

I ran after her, Meziku wait for me!” I yelled. “Come on we’re close I can feel it” she said scampering off. Geez this kid is really something isn’t she, she has this energy that fuels here. Maybe I’ll see if she and Silver and the rest can join me the more the merrier I guess I thought while catching up to Meziku. “We’re here” Meziku whispered. I stopped right next to her and looked up, there sitting in front of us was huge mansion complete with a iron wrought gate and trees with no leaves attached to them, an owl swooped down at us, we both ducked as the owl went for its nightly patrol. “What’s the plan?” Meziku asked me. “We sneak in and try to find Silver and the others, hopefully their will not be too many guards in the mansion” I said to her in a whispered tone.

"Sounds like a plan” Meziku said. “Follow me and keep yourself low, otherwise we will be caught” I said. We crept outside until we found an opening and crawled in. “Wow that was easier than I thought!” Meziku exclaimed. “Getting in is usual the easier part now comes the hard part” I said as we went through a door that lead us to a huge hallway. “Wow so many rooms, how will we know which one is holding Silver and other apprentices?” Meziku asked. “Keep your ears and eyes opened for the slightest of sounds and movements, we’re bound to find them soon” I said hopefully.

We looked in every room. “I don’t think they’re in here” Meziku said with a hint of defeat in her voice. “We have to keep trying” I said determined. We sniffed through most of the doors until Meziku sniffed a door on the upmost level. “Rena, I think I found them” Meziku whispered to me. I walked to where she was and sniffed the underneath of the door. “I think that’s them” I said.

I tried to open the door with my paws. “Nope can’t get it to open” I said panting slightly. As we were trying to figure what to do the two henchmen that blasted Silver’s cave were at the stairway, watching us. “What are those doing here?” Mick asked. “The grey pup is one of the apprentices” Domo said to him. “Who’s that with her?” he asked. That’s the one Red-Eye shot” Mick said.

“Let’s kill them” Domo said with a glint of malice in his eyes. “We can’t” Mick said, putting an arm out to stop his brother, “we have to wait until Red-Eye gives the signal.” Domo groaned loudly. “Shush do you want get mauled?” Mick asked, shushing his brother. “Hmm” my ears twitched at the sound of the henchmen brothers. “Did you hear that, Meziku?” I asked. “No I didn’t hear anything, must have been your imagination” Meziku said.

I breathed in deeply. “Meziku” I said getting her attention. “Yes” she said. “Who knows what’s waiting behind this door, but I just want you to know” I started to say. “Yes what is it?” she asked. “I wish you luck on your training” I said finally. “I wish you luck on your journey and thank you for coming to help me rescue Master and my friends” she said.

I smiled happily as the door suddenly opened to let us in. “Well here goes nothing” I said as we both entered inside. We heard something moving, we both stopped and swiveled our ears to pick up more sounds. “Hey Meziku” I said. “Way ahead of you “she said as she launched up in the air. We snapped and growled, trying to get a hold on anyone in the room, until the light came on. Meziku and I stood up and looked at the door.

I looked and saw the two men standing there. “Where are Silver and the others?” Meziku growled fiercely. “Silver, where are you!” I howled. “In here” I heard her say behind us. Meziku slammed herself against a wall to reveal a hidden hallway. We heard the two men walking toward us, their boots thudding on the floor. “Meziku go and save Silver and the gang, I’ll handle these guys” I told her quickly, she nodded and disappeared into the hallway, which closed behind her.

I turned toward the men. Domo and Mick long time no see” I said sarcastically. “Feelings mutual” Domo said. Mick was standing there not looking at me. “Well now what are you two going to do now” I said slowly. Domo and Mick disappeared quickly. “Hey where’d you go?” I asked. They both jumped down but Domo got to me faster than Mick did.

I landed on the floor with a groan. Meziku was running through the hallway until she reached a door. “Silver are you in here?” she asked nervously. “Meziku over here” Silver motioned her toward her. Meziku looked and saw that Silver and the others were inside a rope trap. Meziku grabbed a knife that was lying on the ground, “hang on I’ll get you guys’ out” she said, sawing at the rope. “That’s good come on Meziku almost there” one of the apprentices said encouragingly.

While Meziku was sawing at the rope, no one saw the man creeping closer to Meziku, until it was too late. Silver screamed loudly as the knife Meziku was holding fell to the floor Meziku’s blood splattered over them all, the man who sliced her stepped over her body, dropping the knife he used. “Meziku!” Silver yelled shrilly, climbing out of the trap. “He he” a man laughed evilly. “Red-Eye I knew you were behind this!” Silver yelled angrily. “Well the offer is still available to join me” he said with a smirk on his face. “What do you take me for a fool?” Silver yelled.

“I just want someone who can kill anyone without mercy and without guilt” he said. “FORGET IT!” she yelled. “Oh the lost of your apprentice has made you feel unreasonable and I can’t have that" he said with a sneer. I had just fight left in me do deal with Domo, Mick was easy to beat. “Are you ready to give up yet?” Domo said, panting slightly. I… will… never… give… up...” I said gasping for air, “Not until Silver and the others are out of harm’s way.” “No need!” I heard a familiar voice say.

I looked to try and find the source of the voice, my vision was blurred from blood all I could see was a silver shape. “Silver” I said breathlessly. Silver ran up to me. “Hey Rena take it easy” she said gently. “Right hey Silver” I said. “Yeah” she answered. I just wanted to say this... I started to say.

“Yeah what is it?” she asked gently. I just wanted to say I’m glad to have been your friend” I said quietly. “No, Rena!” Silver said with tears in her eyes. “Konashi, Claude, Shiriobi, Tanshiku take Rena get her someplace safe” Silver ordered. “Master?” Shiriobi asked with wide eyes. “No questions go” she said sternly. “Yes Ma’am” they answered, scurrying off.

Silver turned toward Domo. “Domo you will pay for what you did for my friend” Silver said with anger in voice. “Oh and what are you going to do about?” Domo said, strutting around her. Silver followed him with her eyes, then she launched up in the air, her silver tail fluttering in the air. She landed on Domo hard, causing him to fall on the ground with a thud. Silver ran to meet the apprentices and me. “Rena!” she yelled out of breath, “how’s she doing?” “Not sure we can’t get a pulse” Claude said quietly with tears in his eyes.

The kids huddled together and cried; Silver walked over and began to cry. “Oh Rena this is my entire fault” she couldn’t say anymore as she turned away and cried. “Mmm” I said looking around. “Master, look!” Claude said excitement coursing through his body. “Huh? What?” she said confused. She turned toward me and saw that I was awake and alive. “Rena!” she yelled happily.

“The one and only” I said, getting up slowly. “You look terrible” I told her. She looked at me. “Yeah and so do you” she said with a hint of amusement in her voice. “Come on let’s go back to the cave, not that there’s much there” Silver sadly. “Wait Meziku should be here, did Red-Eye take her?” I asked, angrily. “Rena Meziku is gone, she died saving us” Silver explained with her head down.

“Oh” I said lost for words. We returned to the cave and stayed there until our wounds healed. “So I guess you’re leaving huh?” Silver asked. “Yeah the Eye of the Island isn’t going to look for itself” I said. “Tell the little ones to behave themselves” I said, holding back tears.

“I will” she said looking up at me. "Good-bye and thanks for everything” I said, running as fast as I could when I heard someone yell. “Rena!” I turned to see Silver trying to catch up to me, she threw a bag at me and I caught it in my mouth. I shook my head in thanks then continued running. I heard Silver yell again, this time I stopped. “Hey Rena is it ok if I join you?” She asked, looking down to the ground. “Sure the more the merrier I guess” I said. Silver and I walked side by side as the sun came up over the horizon.
