As they walked to Ember's apartment, Asher couldn't help but notice the tension in her body. She was stiff, her shoulders hunched, and her eyes fixed on the ground.
"Hey, is everything okay?" Asher asked, his voice low and concerned.
Ember hesitated before responding. "Yeah, everything's fine. My brother just needs my help with something."
Asher sensed that there was more to the story, but he didn't push the issue. Instead, he walked with her in silence, his eyes scanning the surroundings.
When they arrived at Ember's apartment, Asher was surprised to see a young man pacing back and forth in the living room. He was tall, with a messy mop of hair and a look of desperation in his eyes.
"Ember, thank God you're here," the young man said, rushing over to her.
"Hey, Ethan," Ember replied, her voice calm. "What's going on?"
Ethan's eyes darted to Asher, and he hesitated before responding. "It's just...I need your help with something. I'm in a bit of trouble."
Ember's expression turned concerned, and she nodded. "Of course, Ethan. What do you need?"
As Ethan explained his situation, Asher listened intently. It seemed that Ethan had gotten himself into a bit of a mess, and Ember was the only one who could help him.
But as Asher listened, he couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to the story. Ethan seemed genuinely desperate, but there was something in his eyes that didn't quite add up.
As the conversation drew to a close, Asher stood up, his eyes locked on Ethan. "I think I can help," he said, his voice low and confident.
Ember's eyes met his, and she raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" she asked.
Asher smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Let's just say I have some connections that might be able to help your brother."
Ethan's eyes lit up with hope, and he nodded eagerly. "That would be amazing, thank you."
As Asher turned to leave, Ember's hand touched his arm. "Wait," she said, her voice low. "I need to talk to you."
Asher turned back to her, his eyes questioning. "What is it?" he asked.
Ember's eyes locked on his, and she took a deep breath. "I don't know what you're involved in," she said, "but I need you to promise me one thing."
Asher's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with possibilities. "What is it?" he asked.
Ember's voice was barely above a whisper. "Promise me you'll keep my brother safe."
Asher's eyes locked on hers, and he nodded. "I promise," he said, his voice low and husky.
As he turned to leave, Asher couldn't shake off the feeling that he had just stepped into something much bigger than himself.
