Revenge after betrayal
JANE “Your husband has been involved with my wife behind our backs.” The glass slipped from my hand before I could stop it. Water spilled everywhere. I stared at Adrian, certain that I had heard him wrong. Because I just couldn’t believe what he had said. Ethan would never cheat on me. Could he have? No. He couldn’t. I loved him, and he loved me too. “Adrian,” I said, setting my glass down carefully and forcing myself to remain calm. “Is this a prank? Because it’s not funny.” “Do I look like I’m joking?” he asked. “Would I leave the comfort of my home just to come here and spread rumors?” Adrian never looked like anything other than serious. But that didn’t prove he was right. “Ethan loves me,” I said boldly. “He would never cheat on me, not even with my best friend, Maya. She is your wife, for crying out loud.” “I know.” His voice was quiet. “I said the same thing about Maya when I found out a few months ago.” Maya. Just her name alone was beginning to give me goosebumps. Maya, my best friend since childhood. The woman I spent almost all my time with. We did nearly everything together. The woman who called me every single day. To have a man like Ethan, I sometimes wondered if I was the one at fault. Maybe I should have noticed the signs the moment she started saying all sorts of things about how lucky I was to have Ethan as my husband. We were practically like blood sisters. “This isn’t possible,” I said, but my voice was barely a whisper this time. Adrian looked at me the way you look at someone you feel sorry for. It made me uncomfortable. “Weren’t you seeing any signs?” he asked. “There were no signs.” “One whole year, Jane, and you never once suspected anything?” “I said no!” I stood up, my chair scraping backward so loudly. “I trust Ethan completely. Whatever mentality or mindset you think u have, you’re absolutely wrong.” “Sit down.” “I’m leaving.” “Sit down.” Something in his voice stopped me from walking away. He wasn’t harsh. He wasn’t loud. He wasn’t aggressive. He was simply certain. I slowly took my seat. He leaned forward, resting his arms on the table. “One year ago, did anything change between you and Ethan?” I tried to search through my memories. I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. One year ago… The way Maya had suddenly started visiting more often. Twice a week, then four times, then five times. Always when Ethan was home. I had been so happy and excited about it. I thought our friendship was growing stronger. I thought our friendship was beginning to grow deeper. I thought she simply missed me and wanted to spend time with her best friend. I never imagined she wanted what was mine. And Ethan… He was still pretending to be loving and caring. He still sent me flowers every morning and texted me love notes throughout the day. He kissed me as though I were precious to him. But lately, there had been a distance between us. For six months, Ethan had barely given me the affection I was used to. Six long months of: “I’m tired, baby.” “Once I’m done with this contract I’m working on, I’ll make it up to you.” I had believed every word. Stop it. I shook the thoughts away. You’re doing exactly what he wants you to do. “Even if Ethan and I are having some ups and downs between ourselves, that doesn’t prove anything.” Then Adrian said the words that changed everything. “I have proof.” For a few seconds, my blood ran cold. He turned the screen toward me. It took me a few seconds to understand what my eyes were seeing. A luxurious bedroom. Ethan. And Maya. Together. My heart dropped so fast that I thought I was going to be sick right there at the table. I stared at the screen, unable to look away. Unable to breathe. Unable to accept what I was seeing. “That was taken two weeks ago,” Adrian said quietly. I stared at the screen. Two weeks ago. My mind repeated those words over and over again, but they refused to make sense. Two weeks ago, Ethan had kissed me goodbye before leaving for work. Two weeks ago, he had told me he loved me. Two weeks ago, Maya had called me in the evening and complained about how exhausted she was from work. She had even asked me how Ethan was doing. I swallowed hard. “How?” I finally whispered. Adrian looked at me. “How what?” “How did you get this?” His expression changed slightly. “That doesn’t matter right now.” “It matters to me.” My voice trembled. I reached for the phone, but Adrian pulled it slightly away from me. “Jane, there’s more.” My heart sank. “More?” He unlocked the phone again and opened another file. This time, it was a video. I stared at the screen as the video began playing. I saw Ethan walking into a hotel. My husband. The man I had trusted with everything. He looked around before entering the elevator. Then the screen changed. Maya was already waiting in the hallway. My breath caught in my throat. She smiled when she saw him. That smile. I knew that smile. She had given me the same smile hundreds of times. At birthday parties. At family dinners. At my wedding. In my home. Around my husband. I suddenly felt like I had been living inside a lie. “Turn it off,” I whispered. Adrian paused the video. I couldn't look at him. I couldn't even look at the phone anymore. “Jane…” “Turn it off.” He did. Silence settled between us. I stared down at my hands. They were shaking. I curled my fingers into my palms, trying to make them stop. Maya. My best friend. How could she? How could Ethan? I remembered every time I had defended her. Every time Ethan had complained that Maya was around too much, I had told him he was imagining things. “She’s my best friend,” I would say. “She would never do anything to hurt me.” And now I realized how foolish those words sounded. Adrian leaned back in his chair. “I found out six months ago.” I slowly looked up. “Six months?” He nodded. “I suspected something before then, but I didn't have proof.” “Why didn't you tell me?” “Because I didn't know how.” “You could have told me!” “I know.” His voice remained calm, but I could see the pain behind his eyes. “I thought maybe I was wrong. I thought maybe I was destroying my marriage over something that wasn't real.” He paused. “Then I found the messages.” My chest tightened. “What messages?” “Between them.” I looked away. “Do you still have them?” “Yes.” “Show me.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” He unlocked the phone again. I watched as he opened the messages. At first, I couldn't bring myself to read them. Then I saw Maya's name. My stomach twisted. The messages weren't innocent. There were plans to meet. There were excuses they had created to tell us. There were conversations about Ethan's work schedule. There were conversations about me. About my marriage. About things I had told Maya privately. Things no one else knew. I covered my mouth. She had told him everything. My secrets. My fears. My insecurities. Everything. A tear slipped down my cheek. Then another. I quickly wiped them away. “No.” Adrian said nothing. “No,” I repeated. I wasn't crying because I wanted to forgive them. I was crying because I was finally realizing how long I had been fooled. For months, I had been living happily inside a marriage that apparently existed only in my imagination. I had trusted two people who had betrayed me at the same time. My husband. My best friend. The two people I never thought I would have to protect myself from. I stood up. Adrian looked at me. “Where are you going?” “Home.” “To confront him?” I stopped. My hand tightened around my bag. “Yes.” “No.” I turned around. “What?” “Don't confront him yet.” “Why?” “Because if you go home angry, Ethan will know that something is wrong.” “So?” “So he'll have time to destroy the evidence.” I froze. Adrian continued. “He doesn't know that I know. Maya doesn't know either.” I slowly sat back down. “You're saying I should pretend I know nothing?” “For now.” I stared at him. The idea made my stomach turn. “How am I supposed to look at him and pretend everything is normal?” “You don't have to pretend forever.” He leaned closer. “You just need enough time to understand exactly what they've been doing.” I looked at the phone again. A strange feeling began replacing the pain in my chest. It wasn't forgiveness. It wasn't sadness. It was something colder. Something I had never felt before. Anger. For the first time since Adrian arrived, I stopped thinking about how much I loved Ethan. I started thinking about everything he had taken from me. My trust. My dignity. My peace. My time. And suddenly, I remembered something. A conversation Maya and I had months ago. We had been sitting in my bedroom, talking about marriage. She had looked at me and said something I hadn't understood at the time. “If someone takes something from you, would you fight to get it back?” I had laughed. “I guess.” She had smiled. “Good.” At the time, I thought she was talking about something meaningless. Now I wondered. Had she already been talking about Ethan? My heart pounded. I looked at Adrian. “There's something else you haven't told me.” He raised an eyebrow. “How do you know?” “Because you keep saying you have proof.” I held his gaze. “But you haven't told me everything.” Adrian was silent. That silence told me enough. “What else is there?” He slowly placed his phone on the table. “I found out they weren't just meeting.” My stomach tightened. “What do you mean?” “They've been planning something.” “What?” He looked directly into my eyes. “I don't know everything yet.” “Then find out.” “Jane” “No.” I wiped the remaining tears from my face. “I don't want to sit here and cry while they laugh behind my back.” Adrian watched me carefully. “I want to know everything.” “And then?” I looked toward the window. Outside, people were walking past without knowing that my entire world had just collapsed. I took a slow breath. “Then I'll decide what to do.” For the first time that evening, I didn't feel helpless. I was hurt. I was betrayed. But I wasn't helpless. Ethan thought I trusted him. Maya thought I would never suspect her. They both thought I was still the same Jane who believed every word they said. Maybe that was their biggest mistake. I picked up my bag. “I'll see you tomorrow.” Adrian nodded. “And Jane?” I stopped. “Don't let them know you know.” I looked back at him. A faint, bitter smile touched my lips. “They won't.” Then I walked out. The moment I stepped outside, I pulled out my phone. Ethan's name was at the top of my screen. He had sent me a message. I won't be able to make it home tonight, see u tomorrow. I stared at the words for several seconds. Then I typed my reply. I love you too. I almost laughed when I pressed send. Not because it was funny. Because I finally understood something. Sometimes, the person you trust the most is the person who knows exactly how to hurt you. And Ethan had just given me the reason to become someone he would never see coming.
