Rose POV
"I am so sorry." I say, bowing my head in shame to Wei. We are currently sitting in his car after getting out of the hall, and I do not know how to make it up to him. I have only just met him and I have already gotten him entangled in my mess, how could I be so stupid?
I want to change my life, to live for myself and stand up to my family and ex-fiancé but not at the cost of someone else’s life. And now I have roped a complete stranger into my life problems. I let out a sigh.
“Why are you sorry?” Wei asks, placing his hand gently on my cheek and tilting my head.
“For getting you involved in my mess.” I reply sadly.
Wei shrugs his shoulders. “I was willing, and I am willing to get a marriage certificate with you.” He smiles at me.
My breath gets caught in my throat, this human god looks so handsome and his smile just makes him look so otherworldly.
Is he joking with me? I cannot help but think to myself. It wouldn’t be the first time that someone has joked like this with me.
I admit that I wouldn’t mind marrying him, after all he did protect me back there and I feel safe with him as if I have met him somewhere before. But I cannot put him at risk, after all my family would end up targeting him just to get to me.
“You don’t have to force yourself to marry me.” I mumble, looking down and trying to avoid eye contact with him.
“What if I wanted to marry you?” Wei asks quietly.
“A god like you wants to marry me? No way.” I reply without thinking. I quickly cover my mouth with my hands.
“Don’t sell yourself short.”
“I am not, I have a strong business and a home with a small circle of friends but who are loyal to me and support me. But I don’t know you and someone like you would definitely have a girlfriend already.” I respond.
“What makes you think that?!” Wei asks, clenching his fists in anger.
“Because you are handsome and have a driver, which means you must have some money behind you. You are every girls dream man, of course you have a girlfriend.” I explain.
“So by that explanation then, you must already have a boyfriend lined up.” Wei responds calmly.
“What?! No, why would you think that?” I ask surprised.
“Because you are beautiful and have money behind you, you are every man’s dream, so of course you have another boyfriend lined up.” He says.
My jaw drops as this mans words, his voice is soft as velvet and I can hear the hint of laughter in his tone.
I look at him, I go to counter his works but nothing comes out.
“Don’t live your life by stereotypes or double standards. Just because I am a man, have money and, by your description, am handsome does not mean I have a girlfriend because I don’t. If I did, I would not have let you in my car or proposed we actually get married.”
“I am sorry, I was wrong.” I reply, shocked at how my words had made him react. But he does have a point, I really shouldn’t have just assumed anything about him.
“But why do you want to go through with the marriage? It is obvious I lied.”
“One, so you can keep face with those around you.” Wei says, holding up one finger. He then lifts another, “two, you literally told everyone we were getting married, so it’d look odd if we didn’t. And three, I like you.” Wei shrugs his shoulder at the end, putting his fingers down.
“You like me?” I ask.
“Yes, I always have.”
“Always?”
“Sir, where are we going?” The driver asks, interrupting us before Wei can answer and I see the relief wash over Wei’s face.
What does he mean by ‘always’? My curiosity is now peaked.
“To the registrar office.” Wei replies, smirking at me as he says it.
The driver nods his head and we both sit back, I look out of the window and watch the world go by as we speed down the carriageway towards the neighbouring town and the closest registrar office.
“Who are you?” I ask, wondering just who Wei really is and finally breaking the silence of the car. I turn my body to face him, so I can stare at him more. I am shameless but still, he is just so handsome! But I jump back in my seat, Wei is already looking at me. He is resting on the arm rest between us, his hand in his hand as he just shamelessly watches me.
“I am Wei, are you okay?” Wei asks, looking at me concerned.
“Yeah, just…” I try to reply flustered.
“Just?”
“Nervous.”
“Why nervous?”
“I don’t know what my family will do to you, or my ex-fiancé. They are not nice people and I never wanted to get anyone else involved in this madness.” I reply.
“Don’t worry, they wont be able to hurt you with me around and there is more to me than meets the eye.” Wei says, smiling gently and making me at ease but I can hear the promise in his voice and words.
“I’m surprised you have so much power behind your words.” I mumble.
Wei looks at me with another gentle smile, making me melt.
“I have enough personnel, money and influence to protect you for the rest of our life.” Wei replies. He is not boasting, but I can also tell he believes the words he is saying.
“I wish that was true.” I reply solemnly.
“It is, trust me Rose.”
I smile at him; I do not see a hint of a lie in his eyes. Maybe he really could, but why would he help me? Why would he protect me? I am nothing to him, only someone who has caused him trouble since meeting him.
Before I can probe him with further questions, the car brakes sharply and I fall forward, my face connecting with Wei as our lips touch. My eyes close but I can’t bring myself to remove my lips, until I hear a cough and open my eyes to see Wei smirking at me.
“I am sorry.” I mumble, leaning away.
“That was my first kiss.” Wei says, blushing slightly.
No way! This handsome creature has never been kissed before?! I don’t believe it; I think to myself.
"What?" I ask.
"You have to take responsibility, don’t you think?" Wei replies teasingly.
"How?" I ask smiling slightly, leaning back as Wei leans closer to my face.
He smirks. "Marry me."
