Chapter 1: Reunion in Monteverde
The sun filtered through the treetops, painting the Monteverde trail with golden highlights. Solange Merlo walked briskly, holding her daughter Luna's hand—a six-year-old with dark hair and curious eyes marveling at everything around them. Monteverde was a quaint, small town surrounded by dense forests that seemed to hide secrets within their shadows.
Solange had come to Monteverde seeking refuge, a place to start anew after unfortunate events that had shaken her life in the big city. A single mother at twenty-seven, she had left behind broken relationships and shattered dreams in search of peace and stability for Luna.
As they walked down the main street, Solange greeted neighbors she had known since her arrival, exchanging smiles and small talk that made Monteverde feel like a welcoming home. Yet, behind this apparent tranquility, she knew the past had a way of resurfacing when least expected.
Her thoughts abruptly halted upon seeing a familiar figure standing in front of the local bakery. A tall man with an intense gaze and hair now speckled with gray looked out over the town with an expression Solange hadn't seen in years.
"Luna, sweetheart, why don't you go ahead a bit? Mommy needs to talk to someone," Solange said with a trembling voice, trying to conceal her surprise.
Luna nodded and ran ahead toward the candy store she loved, leaving Solange alone facing the man who had once been her friend years ago.
"Lucas..." Solange whispered, unable to suppress a lump in her throat upon saying his name after so long.
Lucas Wesker slowly turned towards her, and for a moment, their eyes met in a silence charged with unspoken emotions. Solange remembered the days when she and Lucas shared conversations, laughter, and confidences under the summer sun. They had been good friends.
"Solange," Lucas replied in a deep voice, his sky-blue eyes searching hers as if seeking answers.
"I didn't expect to see you here," Solange murmured, struggling to maintain composure as memories flooded her mind like a torrent.
"I... I didn't expect to see you either," Lucas admitted after a brief moment of uneasy silence.
The air between them was thick with unresolved tensions, with questions unanswered that had been suspended in time since their paths abruptly diverged years ago. Solange vividly recalled the day everything changed between them, when Lucas, the cheerful and optimistic man she knew, began to darken under the shadow of secrets and questionable decisions.
"How have you been?" Solange finally asked, wanting to break the ice that had formed between them.
Lucas sighed, his shoulders seeming heavier than she remembered.
"I've been... alright. Monteverde is a good place to disappear," he replied with a hint of resignation in his voice.
Solange noticed bitterness in his words, a bitterness that wasn't there before. She wondered what had happened in Lucas's life to transform him in such a way, what dark secrets had led him down this path.
"I thought the same when I arrived here," Solange confessed, remembering how she had left everything behind in search of a new life for herself and Luna.
An uncomfortable silence descended between them once more, filled with unspoken words and buried emotions beneath layers of time and distance. Lucas seemed distant, as if battling internal demons that refused to be tamed.
"Lucas, what happened between us?" Solange asked finally, the question that had been haunting her since she arrived in Monteverde.
Lucas stared at her, his eyes searching hers as if trying to decide whether to trust her with the truth he had hidden for so long.
"It's complicated, Sol. I don't want you getting involved in all of this," he replied quietly, his gaze avoiding hers.
"What is tormenting you so much, Lucas?" Solange pressed, feeling she was on the verge of uncovering the truth behind her lifelong friend's transformation.
Before Lucas could respond, Luna ran back to them, holding a bag of candies with a radiant smile on her face.
"Mommy, look what I bought!" Luna exclaimed, interrupting the tense moment between Solange and Lucas.
Solange looked at her daughter with tenderness, grateful for her innocence and the timely distraction she had brought with her.
"That's great, sweetheart. Now let's go home, okay?" Solange said, giving a quick glance to Lucas before taking Luna's hand and starting to walk towards their home.
Lucas watched them walk away, feeling an even heavier weight on his heart as shadows from the past haunted him once more. He knew that sooner or later, he would have to face the truth, though he feared the consequences of doing so.
As Solange and Luna disappeared from view, Monteverde seemed enveloped in an unsettling silence, as if the trees and shadows around them harbored secrets that resisted being revealed.
