The Rising Storm
Lila barely remembered leaving the seer’s hut. Her thoughts were a whirlwind of fear and confusion, her body moving on instinct as Dante guided her back through the dense forest. The old woman’s words echoed in her mind: The Shadow Alpha knows you exist… You are a bridge between worlds… He will not stop until he claims you.
Each phrase brought a fresh wave of dread. What kind of power did she have? Why was she tied to the wild in ways no human—or wolf—seemed to understand? And why did it feel like her entire existence had become a game piece in a war she never asked to join?
The moon hung high above the forest, its pale light filtering through the trees. The forest no longer felt alive; it was oppressive, closing in on her with each step. Dante walked ahead, his back rigid and tense.
“Dante,” Lila finally said, her voice breaking the silence.
He glanced back, his golden eyes gleaming in the dark. “What is it?”
“What did she mean? About our bond being my strength?”
Dante stopped, turning to face her fully. His expression was guarded, his jaw tight. “The bond between a wolf and their mate is powerful, Lila. It amplifies everything—our strength, our senses, our connection to the pack. For you, it might also be the key to unlocking whatever’s inside you.”
Lila’s heart skipped at the word mate. “You keep saying that, but I still don’t understand. I didn’t ask for this bond. I don’t even know what it really means.”
“It means you’re mine, Lila,” Dante said bluntly, his voice firm. “And I’m yours.”
Her breath hitched. The intensity in his gaze left no room for argument, but it only made her feel more overwhelmed.
“How am I supposed to handle that?” she asked, her voice trembling. “I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
Dante stepped closer, his presence steady and grounding. “You don’t have to figure it all out right now. But you’re not alone in this. I’ll help you.”
His words were meant to reassure her, but they only highlighted how out of her depth she felt. Still, she nodded, forcing herself to hold onto his steady gaze.
“Come on,” he said softly. “We need to get back to the pack. There’s a lot we need to prepare for.”
They resumed their journey in silence, but the forest wasn’t as quiet as before. Faint sounds echoed through the trees—the snap of a branch, the distant howl of a wolf. Lila’s senses felt sharper now, her awareness of her surroundings heightened.
The seer’s hut was far behind them when a low growl rumbled through the air, stopping them both in their tracks.
Dante immediately stepped in front of Lila, his body tense. “Stay behind me,” he said quietly, his golden eyes scanning the darkness.
Lila’s pulse quickened as the growl grew louder, accompanied by the sound of something large moving through the underbrush.
“Rogues?” she whispered.
Dante shook his head. “No. It’s something else.”
Before Lila could ask what, the creature emerged from the shadows. It was massive, its fur dark and matted, its eyes glowing with an unnatural light. It wasn’t like the creature they had faced earlier—it was bigger, more primal, its presence radiating raw power.
“What the hell is that?” Lila gasped.
Dante growled low in his throat. “A wraith wolf. They’re rare, but they’re dangerous. Stay back.”
The wraith wolf’s glowing eyes locked on Lila, and it let out a deafening roar that shook the trees.
Dante didn’t hesitate. He lunged at the creature, his form shifting mid-leap into his wolf—a massive, black beast with gleaming golden eyes. The two collided with a force that sent shockwaves through the air.
Lila stumbled back, her heart racing as she watched the fight unfold. The wraith wolf was fast, its movements fluid and deadly. But Dante was faster, his strength and skill keeping the beast at bay.
The sounds of their snarls and clashes echoed through the forest, each one sending shivers down Lila’s spine. She wanted to run, to hide, but something held her in place—a strange pull that she couldn’t explain.
Then, as the wraith wolf gained the upper hand, pinning Dante to the ground, Lila felt something ignite inside her. A warmth spread through her chest, growing stronger and brighter until it was almost unbearable.
“Get away from him!” she screamed, her voice echoing unnaturally.
The wraith wolf froze, its glowing eyes widening as it turned to look at her. Dante took the opportunity to throw the beast off him, but he didn’t attack. He was staring at Lila, his golden eyes wide with shock.
Lila didn’t understand what was happening. Her body felt like it was on fire, her vision blurring as a strange energy coursed through her veins. The wraith wolf growled, taking a cautious step toward her, but it didn’t attack. It seemed almost... afraid.
The warmth inside her built to a crescendo, and without thinking, she raised her hand. A pulse of energy erupted from her palm, striking the wraith wolf and sending it hurtling back into the trees.
The forest went silent.
Lila blinked, staring at her hand in disbelief. The warmth was gone, but the memory of it lingered.
“What… what just happened?” she whispered.
Dante shifted back into his human form, his chest heaving as he approached her cautiously. “Lila,” he said slowly, “are you okay?”
“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice shaking. “What did I just do?”
Dante reached for her, his touch steadying her trembling frame. “That,” he said, his voice low, “is exactly what the seer was talking about.”
“But I don’t understand,” Lila said, her voice rising in panic. “What am I?”
Dante held her gaze, his golden eyes filled with a mixture of awe and worry. “You’re something more, Lila. Something we don’t fully understand yet. But whatever it is... it’s powerful.”
Lila’s knees buckled, and Dante caught her before she could fall. She leaned into him, her mind spinning with fear and uncertainty. The warmth, the energy, the way the wraith wolf had hesitated—it all pointed to something bigger, something she wasn’t ready for.
“Come on,” Dante said gently. “We need to get back to the pack. They need to know what we’re up against.”
Lila nodded weakly, letting him guide her through the forest. But even as they moved, her thoughts were consumed by a single, terrifying question.
If the Shadow Alpha wanted her for her power… what would he do to claim her?
