Shadows and Secrets The tension within the pack was palpable as Dante and Lila returned to the clearing. The wolves, already on edge from the rogue incursions, turned their sharp eyes toward her, their gazes lingering with a mix of curiosity and unease. “She’s back,” someone murmured, their tone unreadable. Magnus stepped forward, his usual defiance tempered by suspicion. “What happened out there?” he demanded, his piercing blue eyes flicking between Dante and Lila. Dante’s expression darkened. “We encountered a wraith wolf.” The pack erupted into murmurs and growls, their unease escalating. Wraith wolves were a nightmare whispered of in legends—beasts of shadow and fury, their existence often dismissed as myth. “And?” Magnus pressed, his gaze narrowing. Dante glanced at Lila, his hesitation evident. “Lila took it down.” The murmurs stopped. Every wolf turned to stare at her, their expressions ranging from disbelief to wariness. “She what?” Magnus barked, stepping closer. Lila shrank under his scrutiny, but Dante moved to block him, his golden eyes flashing with warning. “She’s stronger than any of you realize,” he said coldly. “Stronger than even she knows.” Magnus didn’t back down. “She’s human—or at least, she’s supposed to be. How could she take down something like that?” Lila clenched her fists, her frustration bubbling over. “I don’t know, okay?” she snapped, stepping out from behind Dante. “I don’t understand any of this either. One moment I’m running for my life, and the next… something inside me just clicked.” The pack exchanged uneasy glances, their skepticism clear. “You’re a liability,” Magnus said bluntly. “If she doesn’t even know what she’s capable of, how can we trust her?” Dante growled low in his throat. “Watch your tone, Magnus.” But Lila held up a hand, stopping him. “He’s right,” she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. “I don’t know what’s happening to me. But I’m not going to sit back and let it control me. If I’m going to be part of this pack, I need to figure out what I am—and fast.” Magnus studied her for a long moment before nodding grudgingly. “Fine. Then prove it. Show us that you’re not just some human caught in a storm too big for her.” Lila straightened, meeting his gaze head-on. “I will.” Dante’s hand rested lightly on her shoulder, his touch a silent reassurance. “We’ll train her,” he said, his voice firm. “And when the time comes, she’ll face any challenges that arise.” Magnus didn’t look convinced, but he nodded. “Let’s hope she survives long enough to prove you right.” --- Later that night, Lila sat by the fire, staring into the flames as the rest of the pack went about their routines. She could feel their glances, the weight of their judgment pressing down on her. “Hey.” She looked up to see Dante approaching, his expression softer now. He sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders brushed. “How are you holding up?” he asked quietly. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “Every time I think I’m starting to understand this world, something happens to remind me how much I don’t belong here.” Dante frowned. “You do belong here, Lila. You’re part of the pack now, whether they see it or not.” “But why?” she asked, turning to face him. “Why did you choose me? Why is this bond so important?” He hesitated, his golden eyes searching hers. “Because it’s not just about the bond, Lila. It’s about you. From the moment I met you, I knew you were different. You’re not just some human who stumbled into our world—you’re meant to be here.” His words sent a shiver down her spine, both comforting and unsettling. Before she could respond, a rustling in the trees drew their attention. Dante was on his feet in an instant, his body tense as he scanned the darkness. “What is it?” Lila whispered, standing as well. “I don’t know,” he said, his voice low. “Stay close.” The rustling grew louder, closer. Then, a figure emerged from the shadows—a man with sharp features and piercing green eyes. He wore a confident smirk, his stance relaxed despite the tension in the air. “Dante,” the man said smoothly, his voice carrying an air of mockery. “Long time no see.” Dante’s growl rumbled low in his throat. “What are you doing here, Hale?” Lila’s eyes darted between them, her pulse quickening. There was something dangerous about this man, something that set her on edge. “I heard some interesting rumors,” Hale said, his gaze flicking to Lila. “A human with powers strong enough to take down a wraith wolf? I just had to see it for myself.” “She’s none of your concern,” Dante said coldly, stepping protectively in front of Lila. Hale chuckled, his eyes glinting with amusement. “Oh, but she is. Word travels fast, Alpha. The Shadow Alpha knows about her now. And if you think he’s going to let you keep her, you’re sorely mistaken.” Lila’s blood ran cold. “Who is the Shadow Alpha?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Hale’s smirk widened. “He’s the one who’s going to change everything. And you, little human, are the key to his plans.” Dante’s growl deepened. “Leave. Now.” Hale raised his hands in mock surrender. “Relax, Dante. I’m just the messenger. But consider this a warning—the storm is coming. And when it hits, no one will be safe.” With that, he turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving behind a heavy silence. Lila looked at Dante, her fear evident. “What does he mean? What storm?” Dante’s jaw tightened, his eyes glowing with anger. “It means we’re out of time. The Shadow Alpha is coming, Lila. And we need to be ready.”
