Echoes of the Past
The fire crackled in the center of the clearing, its warm glow doing little to chase away the chill that had settled over the pack. Lila sat on the edge of the circle, her mind spinning from Hale’s warning. Dante had said little since the stranger’s departure, his jaw tight and his movements clipped.
The pack, sensing his unease, gave him space, though their curiosity was palpable. Lila could feel their questions pressing against her just as heavily as her own.
Finally, she couldn’t take the silence any longer. “Dante,” she said, her voice low but firm.
He glanced at her, his golden eyes still sharp.
“Who is the Shadow Alpha?” she asked. “And what does he want with me?”
The pack’s murmurs stopped, all eyes turning to their alpha.
Dante sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “The Shadow Alpha is more myth than man to most wolves. A ghost of a story whispered to pups to keep them in line. But he’s real. He’s dangerous. And he’s been building power for years.”
“What kind of power?” Lila pressed.
Dante hesitated, clearly reluctant to share more. But Magnus stepped forward, his voice hard. “The kind that can tear packs apart,” he said. “They say he has rogues, witches, even hunters working for him. He doesn’t follow our laws or respect our traditions. All he cares about is domination.”
“And now he wants me,” Lila said, her stomach twisting.
“He wants your power,” Dante corrected, his voice tight. “What you did to that wraith wolf—no ordinary wolf could have done that, human or not. He’ll see you as a threat... or a tool.”
The weight of his words settled over her. Lila wrapped her arms around herself, trying to process what it meant. She had barely begun to understand her connection to this world, and now it felt like she was being pulled into something far bigger than herself.
“What do we do?” she asked finally.
Dante’s gaze hardened. “We prepare. Starting tomorrow, your training begins in earnest.”

The Next Morning
The clearing was quiet as Lila stood in the center, her heart pounding as she faced Magnus. Dante stood to the side, his arms crossed, while the rest of the pack formed a loose circle around them.
“You want to prove yourself?” Magnus said, his voice sharp. “Then fight me.”
Lila blinked, her body tensing. “Fight you? I don’t even know how to—”
“You think the Shadow Alpha’s going to wait for you to figure it out?” Magnus snapped. “You need to learn how to defend yourself, and there’s no better way than this.”
Dante stepped forward, his expression hard. “Don’t push her too far.”
Magnus’s lip curled. “She wants to be part of the pack? Then she needs to earn it.”
Lila swallowed hard, her pulse racing. She didn’t want to back down, not in front of the pack—not in front of Dante. Taking a deep breath, she nodded. “Fine. Let’s do this.”
Magnus grinned, though there was no humor in it. “Good. Let’s see what you’re made of.”
The fight began quickly, with Magnus lunging toward her. Lila barely had time to react, ducking under his outstretched arm and scrambling to the side. Her instincts screamed at her to run, but she forced herself to stay, her hands clenching into fists.
“Focus!” Dante barked. “Don’t just react—anticipate!”
Lila tried to follow his advice, watching Magnus’s movements carefully. He circled her like a predator, his blue eyes gleaming with challenge.
“Come on,” he taunted. “Show me that fire you had last night.”
Anger flared in her chest, and she rushed forward, swinging wildly. Magnus easily sidestepped her, his hand darting out to shove her off balance. She stumbled, hitting the ground hard, but she pushed herself back up, determination burning in her veins.
“Not bad,” Magnus said, his tone almost grudging. “But you need to control it.”
They continued to spar, and slowly, Lila began to find her rhythm. She dodged Magnus’s blows more effectively, her movements growing more fluid. Each time she landed a hit, the pack murmured in approval, and a flicker of confidence began to take root in her chest.
Finally, Magnus called the fight to a halt, stepping back with a nod. “Not terrible,” he admitted. “You’ve got potential.”
Lila let out a shaky breath, her body aching but her spirit buoyed by the small victory.
“Training will be every day,” Dante said, stepping forward. “And it won’t stop until you’re ready.”
Lila nodded, her resolve solidifying. “I’ll do whatever it takes.”

That Evening
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the forest in shades of gold and amber, Lila sat with Dante on a rocky outcrop overlooking the clearing. The day’s training had left her exhausted, but she felt stronger, more connected to the pack—and to Dante.
“Do you really think I can do this?” she asked softly, staring at the distant treetops.
Dante’s gaze was steady. “I wouldn’t have chosen you if I didn’t.”
She turned to him, her heart twisting with both gratitude and uncertainty. “But what if I fail? What if I’m not strong enough?”
He reached out, his hand brushing against hers. “You won’t. You’ve already proven that you’re more than capable. You just need to believe it.”
Lila felt a warmth spread through her chest, his words grounding her in a way nothing else could.
But as the two of them sat in the quiet of the evening, a howl echoed in the distance—a sound filled with pain and desperation.
Dante shot to his feet, his expression darkening. “That’s one of ours.”
Without another word, he shifted, his wolf form a blur of motion as he disappeared into the trees.
Lila stood, her heart racing. Whatever had happened, she knew it was just the beginning.
