Lila lay awake under the canopy of stars, her mind racing despite the stillness of the camp. The clearing was quiet now, save for the occasional rustle of the wind through the trees and the distant sounds of wolves patrolling the perimeter. Though the danger seemed to have passed, her body remained tense, her instincts unwilling to let her fully relax. She turned to her side, glancing toward the campfire. Dante sat at its edge, his face illuminated by the flickering flames. He was speaking quietly with Magnus, their conversation too low for her to hear. Magnus’s stiff posture and sharp gestures suggested the conversation was anything but friendly. Lila sighed and rolled onto her back, staring up at the night sky. So much had happened in such a short time. She felt like a stranger in her own skin, her thoughts tangled with questions she couldn’t answer. What was she? Why did the Shadow Pack fear her? And what did the strange creature tonight mean for her future? The memory of its red eyes sent a shiver down her spine. It wasn’t like the wolves she’d met in the pack—its presence had felt corrupted, unnatural, like something torn from a nightmare. She closed her eyes, willing herself to sleep, but the sound of approaching footsteps made her sit up. Dante appeared beside her, his golden eyes reflecting the moonlight. “Couldn’t sleep?” he asked, sitting down on the ground beside her. She shook her head. “Too much on my mind.” He nodded, his gaze distant. “I get it. Nights like this… they stay with you.” “What were you and Magnus talking about?” she asked hesitantly. Dante sighed, running a hand through his hair. “He’s worried about the pack. About you.” “Of course he is,” she muttered, hugging her knees to her chest. “He doesn’t trust me.” “It’s not just about trust,” Dante said. “Magnus grew up in a world where strength and loyalty are everything. He sees you as an unknown—a variable we can’t predict. That scares him.” Lila frowned. “I’m not here to threaten anyone. I didn’t choose this.” “I know,” Dante said, his voice soft. “And so does he, deep down. But you’re not just anyone, Lila. You’re… different.” “That word again,” she muttered. “Different. Special. Half-bound. Everyone keeps saying it, but no one will tell me what it means.” Dante hesitated, his expression conflicted. “It’s because we don’t know exactly what it means. Not yet.” His honesty was disarming, and for the first time that night, Lila felt a flicker of understanding. Dante wasn’t holding back answers to frustrate her—he truly didn’t have them. “Do you think the seer will?” she asked quietly. “If anyone does, it’s her,” he replied. “She’s old—older than most wolves in the pack can remember. She’s seen things, knows things. But she doesn’t give her knowledge freely. It’ll take more than questions to earn her help.” “What do you mean?” “The seer is... particular,” Dante said, choosing his words carefully. “She values strength, but not just physical power. She tests people—forces them to confront their fears, their pasts, even their futures.” A chill ran through Lila at the thought. “What kind of tests?” “I don’t know,” Dante admitted. “She’s different with everyone. But whatever happens, I’ll be there with you.” His words brought her a small measure of comfort, though the uncertainty of the journey ahead still loomed. “What about the pack?” she asked after a moment. “Do you think they’ll accept me? Really accept me?” Dante looked at her, his expression thoughtful. “The pack is like a family. It takes time to earn their trust, but once you do, they’ll fight for you with everything they have. Tonight was a start. The way you stood up to Magnus, the way you reacted to the Abomination… it showed them you’re not weak.” Lila gave a hollow laugh. “I didn’t feel strong. I felt terrified.” “That’s the thing about fear,” Dante said, his voice steady. “It doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human. But how you face it—that’s what makes you strong.” The words settled over her like a warm blanket, easing some of the tension in her chest. “Thank you,” she said softly. Dante smiled, his golden eyes warm. “Get some rest, Lila. Tomorrow’s going to be a long day.” She nodded, lying back down as Dante returned to the fire. This time, the weight of exhaustion pulled her under, and sleep claimed her. --- When dawn broke, the pack was already stirring. Lila woke to the sound of voices and the rustling of leaves as the wolves prepared for the day ahead. Dante was waiting for her, a satchel slung over his shoulder. “Ready?” he asked as she approached. “As ready as I’ll ever be,” she replied, trying to ignore the knot of nerves in her stomach. Magnus stood nearby, his arms crossed. He didn’t speak as they passed but gave her a curt nod—an acknowledgment, if not quite acceptance. “Stick close to me,” Dante said as they entered the forest. “The path to the seer’s haven is treacherous, and we don’t know what else might be out there.” Lila nodded, her senses on high alert as they moved deeper into the woods. The trees grew denser, their gnarled branches intertwining to form a canopy that blocked out much of the light. The air was cool and damp, carrying the earthy scent of moss and pine. As they walked, Lila couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. The shadows seemed to shift and flicker at the edges of her vision, and every rustle of leaves made her heart race. “Is it always like this?” she whispered. “No,” Dante said, his tone grave. “Something’s wrong.” Before she could ask what he meant, a low growl echoed through the trees. Dante froze, his body tense. “Stay behind me.” The growl grew louder, and from the shadows emerged a pair of wolves, their eyes glowing with an unnatural red light. “More of them,” Dante muttered, his voice grim. “Stay close, Lila. This isn’t going to be easy.” The wolves snarled, their movements jerky and unnatural. Lila’s heart pounded as she prepared to face yet another fight. Whatever the seer had to tell her, it had better be worth it.
