Awakening the Wild As their kiss ended, the world around them seemed to pulse with a newfound vibrancy. Lila’s senses sharpened; the forest was alive, the whispers of the wind carrying the rustling of leaves and distant calls of creatures. She felt connected to everything in a way she never had before, as though the bond with the pack had unlocked a hidden part of her soul. Dante kept his arm around her as they walked back toward the firelit heart of the clearing. The pack had reassembled, their eyes still lingering on Lila with curiosity and admiration. Magnus stood at the edge, watching her closely, his expression unreadable. Though his submission had been clear, it didn’t mean he would lower his guard. She understood that this was only the beginning. “Tonight was a success,” Dante murmured, his breath warm against her ear. “But you’ll need to prepare for what’s to come.” “What’s to come?” Lila asked, her voice trembling slightly. She still felt the adrenaline from her trial coursing through her, but beneath it was a flicker of uncertainty. “The pack knows you’re strong, but they’ll want more proof,” he said, leading her to a log where they could sit. “And it’s not just them. The other alphas will hear about you soon, Lila. They won’t all be welcoming.” Her heart sank. “Why? I’m not trying to take over anything. I just want to survive... and belong.” Dante’s golden eyes softened, and he reached out to take her hand. “You’re more than that, Lila. You’re... different. Something we haven’t seen before. That kind of power, that kind of bond—it scares people. And in our world, fear can lead to challenges.” “Challenges?” Lila repeated, her stomach twisting. “Challenges to your place,” Dante explained. “To your worth, your strength, even to your life.” The weight of his words settled over her, heavy and inescapable. Lila glanced at the wolves scattered around the clearing. Some appeared relaxed, their stances open and accepting, but others—like Magnus—seemed tense, their gazes calculating. “Are they all going to test me like Magnus did?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Dante hesitated, then shook his head. “Not all. But there will be those who want to see you fail. They’ll think a human—half-bound or not—has no place in our world. That’s why you need to trust your instincts even more. Tonight proved you have what it takes.” “I don’t even know what I am,” she said, frustration bubbling up. “You keep saying I’m different, but no one will tell me why. What does being ‘half-bound’ even mean?” Dante looked away, his jaw tightening. For the first time since she met him, he seemed uncertain. “I don’t have all the answers,” he admitted. “But I know someone who might.” Before she could press further, a sharp howl cut through the clearing. The pack froze, their ears twitching as the sound echoed into the night. It was a call, Lila realized—a signal from the outer perimeter. A warning. Dante shot to his feet, his body taut with readiness. “Stay here,” he ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument. “What’s happening?” she asked, panic rising as the pack began to move, their fluid grace shifting from calm to alert. “Rogues,” Dante said, his golden eyes flashing. “They’ve crossed into our territory.” “Rogues?” The word felt foreign and menacing, carrying with it a sense of danger she couldn’t fully grasp. “Wolves without packs,” Dante explained quickly. “Or those exiled from one. They’re unpredictable and dangerous.” Lila’s pulse quickened as Dante turned to join the others. She reached out, grabbing his arm. “Wait! What am I supposed to do?” His expression softened, but his voice was firm. “Stay here. I’ll come back for you.” And then he was gone, a blur of movement as he disappeared into the trees with the rest of the pack. The clearing was eerily silent without them, the absence of their presence leaving Lila feeling exposed. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to steady her breathing. But the quiet didn’t last long. A rustling in the underbrush made her spin around, her heart hammering in her chest. She strained her ears, listening for any sign of the pack, but all she heard was the soft crackle of leaves and the faint sound of paws against the forest floor. “Dante?” she called out, her voice trembling. No answer. The rustling grew louder, closer. And then, from the shadows, a pair of eyes glowed—a deep, unnatural red. Lila took a step back, her breath catching in her throat. Whatever it was, it wasn’t like the wolves she had seen tonight. Its presence felt wrong, like a dark, malevolent force had entered the clearing. The creature stepped into the moonlight, its form massive and twisted. It wasn’t a wolf, not entirely. Its fur was matted, its limbs elongated, and its teeth glinted in the pale light. A low, guttural snarl rumbled from its chest, sending chills down Lila’s spine. Instinct screamed at her to run, but her legs refused to move. She could only watch as the creature advanced, its gaze locked on hers. It was hunting her—she could feel it in the way it moved, deliberate and predatory. “Trust your instincts,” Dante’s voice echoed in her mind. With a surge of adrenaline, Lila forced herself to move. She darted toward the rock formation, putting as much distance as she could between herself and the creature. But it was fast—faster than anything she had ever seen. She barely had time to react as it lunged, its claws swiping at her. Lila stumbled and fell, the wind knocked out of her as she hit the ground. The creature loomed over her, its growl vibrating through her bones. Desperation flooded her, and she did the only thing she could think of—she let out a growl of her own, low and fierce, just like she had with Magnus. To her shock, the creature hesitated, its head tilting slightly as if confused. But the moment was fleeting, and it lunged again. Before it could reach her, a blur of movement collided with it, sending it crashing to the ground. Dante stood between her and the creature, his golden eyes blazing with fury. “Stay back!” he barked at her, his voice more wolf than human. Lila scrambled to her feet, her heart pounding as she watched Dante face the creature. The rest of the pack arrived moments later, their howls filling the night as they surrounded the clearing. The battle had begun, and Lila realized with chilling clarity that her new world was far more dangerous than she had ever imagined.
