Awakening The Wild The howls rose in unison, harmonizing with the thrum in Lila’s chest. She felt as if she were part of the sound, her heartbeat syncing with the rhythm of the pack. For the first time, the weight of her doubts lifted, replaced by a sense of belonging so profound it brought tears to her eyes. Dante stood beside her, his golden eyes locked on hers, a small smile curving his lips. “They see you now,” he said softly. “Not just as an outsider or a human. They see you as you. And they accept you.” Lila scanned the clearing, her gaze moving from wolf to wolf. Each of them was different: sleek, muscular, regal, or scarred, but all carried an aura of undeniable strength. They weren’t just animals—they were something more, something ancient and sacred. And now, she was a part of it. “What happens next?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Dante’s expression turned serious, though his hand remained warm and steady on her arm. “You’ve felt the bond tonight,” he said. “But there’s more. The pack will need to understand your place among us. Your awakening isn’t just about you—it’s about all of us.” “What does that mean?” Lila asked, her stomach tightening with nerves. Dante hesitated, his jaw clenching slightly. “It means they’ll test you,” he said finally. “They’ll want to see your strength, your instincts. They’ll want to know if you’re ready.” Lila’s breath hitched. “What if I’m not?” she asked, her voice trembling. “What if I fail?” Dante stepped closer, his hands cupping her face. The intensity in his gaze sent a shiver down her spine. “You won’t,” he said firmly. “Because you’re not alone. I’ll be with you, every step of the way.” The warmth of his touch, the certainty in his voice, calmed the storm inside her. She nodded, though her nerves still hummed beneath the surface. “Okay,” she said softly. “I’ll do it.” Dante smiled, his pride in her evident. “That’s my girl,” he said, his voice filled with affection. The words sent a wave of warmth through her, and she realized with startling clarity just how deeply she cared for him. Dante wasn’t just her protector—he was her anchor, her guide in this strange new world. And though she didn’t fully understand it yet, she knew there was a connection between them that went beyond words. The pack parted as Dante led her toward the rock formation at the center of the clearing. The air felt heavier here, charged with an energy that made Lila’s skin tingle. The wolves watched her with unwavering intensity, their gazes sharp and assessing. “Stand here,” Dante said, guiding her to the base of the rock. “This is where the tests will begin.” Lila swallowed hard, her hands trembling at her sides. “What kind of tests?” she asked, her voice barely audible. Dante didn’t answer right away. Instead, he looked up at the moon, its light bathing the clearing in an ethereal glow. When he spoke, his voice was low and reverent. “The tests will be different for you,” he said. “You’re not a wolf, Lila. You’re something else. Something new. The pack will want to see what that means.” Before she could respond, a low growl rippled through the clearing. Lila turned to see one of the wolves stepping forward, its massive frame cutting an imposing figure in the moonlight. Its fur was a deep, silvery gray, and its eyes burned with a fierce intelligence. “This is Magnus,” Dante said. “He’s the pack’s second-in-command. He’ll oversee your tests.” Magnus stopped a few feet from Lila, his gaze boring into hers. Despite her fear, Lila forced herself to meet his eyes, refusing to back down. She didn’t know where the courage came from, but it surged through her like a wildfire, pushing her to stand tall. Magnus growled again, the sound low and rumbling, and then began to circle her. Lila’s pulse raced, but she stayed still, her body tense with anticipation. She could feel the eyes of the pack on her, their collective energy pressing down on her like a weight. Dante’s voice cut through the tension, calm but firm. “Trust your instincts, Lila,” he said. “Don’t think—just feel.” Magnus lunged. Lila’s body moved before her mind could catch up, twisting to the side as the massive wolf swiped at her. She stumbled but caught herself, adrenaline surging through her veins. Magnus didn’t give her a chance to recover, coming at her again with lightning speed. This time, she dropped to the ground, rolling out of his path. The pack erupted in low growls and murmurs of approval. Lila’s heart pounded as she scrambled to her feet, her senses sharper than ever. She could hear Magnus’s breathing, could see the subtle shift in his muscles as he prepared to attack again. But this time, she didn’t wait for him to strike. With a burst of speed she didn’t know she possessed, Lila darted toward Magnus, her body moving with an agility that felt both foreign and natural. She ducked under his next swipe and spun around, placing herself behind him. Before he could react, she let out a low, guttural growl that surprised even her. Magnus froze, his ears twitching, and then turned to face her. For a long moment, they stared at each other, the air between them crackling with tension. And then, to Lila’s shock, Magnus lowered his head, a gesture of submission. The clearing erupted in howls, the pack’s voices rising in unison. Lila stood there, panting and trembling, as the reality of what had just happened sank in. “You did it,” Dante said, his voice filled with pride. He stepped forward, his hands gripping her shoulders. “You trusted yourself, and the pack saw your strength.” Lila looked up at him, her eyes wide. “I don’t know how I did that,” she admitted, her voice shaking. “It was like… like something took over.” Dante smiled, his golden eyes warm. “That’s your bond with us,” he said. “It’s part of who you are now. And tonight, you proved to everyone here that you belong.” Lila glanced around at the pack, their gazes no longer filled with doubt or suspicion. Instead, she saw acceptance. Respect. And for the first time since this journey began, she felt truly at home. As the pack began to disperse, Dante pulled her into his arms, holding her close. “I’m so proud of you,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. Lila rested her head against his chest, the steady beat of his heart soothing her. “Thank you,” she whispered. “For everything.” Dante tilted her chin up, his eyes searching hers. “You don’t have to thank me,” he said softly. “You’re my mate, Lila. Protecting you, guiding you—it’s what I’m meant to do.” Her breath caught at his words, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still. The bond between them, unspoken but undeniable, shimmered like a thread of moonlight, pulling them closer. And as Dante lowered his lips to hers, Lila closed her eyes, letting the warmth of his kiss drown out the rest of the world.
