Chapter 2: The Counteroffer The next morning, Ava Sterling walked into Sterling Corp headquarters at 8:00 AM sharp. She hadn't slept. Not because of Ethan. Because of the 47 emails, 12 missed calls, and 3 legal threats from Carter Global's lawyers. Her assistant, Maya, was already waiting with two coffees and a folder thick enough to be a weapon. "Ms. Sterling, Mr. Carter's legal team sent this at 3 AM." Ava took the folder. "What is it?" "A counteroffer." Maya's voice was careful. "And... a personal letter." Ava opened it. On top: A $50,000,000 check. Made out to Sterling Corp. Note: "Down payment. Let's talk." - E.C. Under it: Divorce papers. Already signed. Note: "If money is what you want. Take it. Then leave me alone." - E.C. Ava's hands didn't shake. Good. "He thinks he can buy me off," Ava said quietly. "He thinks you still want him," Maya replied. Ava looked out the 60th floor window. Carter Global's tower was right across the street. She could see his office light was already on. "Schedule a meeting," Ava said. "Today. 2 PM. His office." "Alone?" "Alone." --- At 1:58 PM, Ava walked into Carter Global. No lawyer. No assistant. Just her, in a white pantsuit that cost more than most people's cars. The receptionist nearly dropped her phone. "Ms. Sterling, Mr. Carter is expecting you. 50th floor." The elevator ride was silent. Ding. Ethan was standing at the door when it opened. He looked terrible. 3-day stubble. Sleeves rolled up. Eyes red. The perfect CEO was gone. In his place was the man she married. "Ava." "Mr. Carter." He stepped aside. "Come in." His office was massive. Floor to ceiling windows. The entire city.
