The Woman Who Came Back To Destroy Him
The boardroom was silent. Thirty executives sat frozen around the 40-foot mahogany table, but no one dared to breathe. Because at the head of the table stood Ethan Carter. CEO of Carter Global. Billionaire. Ruthless. And for the first time in three years, his perfect CEO mask cracked. The glass doors opened. Click. Click. Click. Every head turned. Ava Sterling walked in. Black power suit. Hair pulled back in a sleek bun. Diamond earrings that caught the light but never outshined her. She looked like she owned the world. Because now, she did. Ethan's jaw tightened. His pen snapped in half. Ava Sterling. His ex-wife. The woman he divorced three years ago because "business came first." The woman he watched cry in the courthouse and told himself he didn't care. Only now she wasn't the broken girl in the courthouse. She was Sterling Corp's new CEO. Forbes 30 Under 30. Net worth: $4.2 billion. And she was here to buy his company. "Good morning, gentlemen," Ava said, her voice ice cold and professional. She didn't look at Ethan. Not once. "And Mr. Carter. Shall we discuss the acquisition?" Acquisition. The word hit him like a punch. Three years. Three years since he signed those divorce papers and chose a billion-dollar merger over the woman who loved him. Three years since he told himself it was just business. Three years since he saw her last. The boardroom projector flickered to life. Sterling Corp's logo appeared on the wall - bigger than Carter Global's. One of the executives whispered, "Sir, Sterling Corp just bought 30% of our shares. Hostile takeover." Ethan didn't answer. He couldn't. Because Ava was looking at him now. And her eyes... God, her eyes. They used to look at him like he was everything. Now they looked at him like he was nothing. "You've got some nerve," Ethan said finally, standing up. His voice was low, dangerous. "Showing up here like this." Ava tilted her head. "Nerve? Mr. Carter, this is business. You taught me that." She walked to the window, looking out over the city. The city they built together. The city he gave her after the divorce as "severance." "I built this company from nothing," Ethan said. "You can't just—" "I can," Ava cut him off. She turned around, and that smile. It wasn't kind. It wasn't warm. It was the smile of a woman who had nothing left to lose. "I just did." She walked around the table slowly, heels clicking against marble. She stopped right in front of him. Close enough that he could smell her perfume. The same one from their wedding day. "Do you remember what you said to me, Ethan?" she whispered, so only he could hear. "The day you served me divorce papers?" He did. Every word. "You're holding me back." Ava straightened. "Well. Consider this my resignation from your life. Effective immediately." She slid a folder across the table. "Offer sheet. $2.1 billion. All cash. You have 48 hours." The room erupted. Executives started shouting. Lawyers scrambled. But Ethan and Ava just stared at each other. "You're making a mistake," Ethan said, but his voice cracked. Ava laughed. It was soft, and it broke his heart. "No, Ethan. The mistake was marrying you." She turned to leave. "Wait," Ethan said. Ava stopped, but didn't turn around. "I—" He wanted to say sorry. He wanted to say he loved her. He wanted to say he was wrong. Instead he said, "This isn't over." Ava looked over her shoulder. For one second, the ice cracked. For one second, he saw the girl he married. Then it was gone. "You're right," she said. "It's just beginning." She walked out. The glass doors closed behind her. The boardroom exploded into chaos. Phones ringing. People yelling. But Ethan stood perfectly still. Behind him, his assistant whispered, "Sir... Sterling Corp just bought 30% of our shares. At market open tomorrow, they'll have 51%." Ethan closed his eyes. Three years ago he chose money over love. Today, love came back with money. She wasn't here for closure. She was here for war. Ethan opened his eyes. The woman he threw away was now the biggest threat to his empire. And she wasn't done yet. Outside, Ava got into her Bentley. Her assistant asked, "Did it go well, Ms. Sterling?" Ava looked up at the Carter Global tower. 50 floors. His name on top. She smiled. "Phase one: complete." The car pulled away. Inside the tower, Ethan poured himself a whiskey he didn't drink. Game on.
