The boat sliced through black water, the engine's roar swallowing every other sound. Spray stung my face as we crashed over waves and I gripped the rail so hard my knuckles went white. Ennis stood rigid at the helm, his jaw set in that way that meant he was calculating every possibility, every angle. Elias crouched near the bow, one hand on his Glock, scanning the darkness like he could will threats into visibility through sheer force of rage. Ten minutes passed. Then twelve.
