Chapter 15: Unexpected Attack

One year later.

Several explosions are heard all over the city of Nairobi. The building goes down out of the explosions. It is a Monday when every Kenyan is busy with work after having a restful weekend. What was happening, none expected it to happen at all.

Screams were heard all over and people scampered to safety. The smoke and debris went up the air and came down hitting the people. There was confusion, people were confused, no one understood what was going on.

Tole, Brian, and Sofi were in the city mall doing some shopping together when this happened.

“Oh my God, what is happening?”  Sofi asked as she held tightly onto her husband.

“I think it must be a terrorist attack or something else.”

“Tole let us find somewhere safe and try to find out what is happening.” Brian proposed.

Brian and Tole seemed calm enough and they were thinking straight. Everyone was running in a different direction without knowing where they were going. Tole and Brian tried to urge them to take cover but none seemed to care. 

They had to take cover for the sake of Sofi who was eight months pregnant and was not supposed to be subjected to such terror. She was sweating profusely because of the panic and the frantic activities she saw around her.  

“Let us find the control room for this mall, and use the CCTV controls to see what is happening outside. Brian can you call the president and tell him we are here.” 

“Sure let me call him, we need to head to the ground floor, I believe the control room must be there.”

They moved quickly downwards and managed to locate the control room which was locked. Tole tried to hit the door hard but he could not break the door. They tried to look around for a security guard and luckily one was there. 

“Hello do you have access to the control room, I need to be inside there now.”

“No one is allowed inside the control room, only authorized people can go in.”

They all pull out their official job identity cards which showed they worked in the office of the president.

“Sorry, come I will open the room for you.”

They all go inside and lock themselves there, Tole was happy because he knew his wife would be safer there than outside the mall. Shortly after the explosions, gun fires and grenades were heard.

People screamed as they ran away, “Terrorist, terrorist, terrorist, run, run, run, they are coming this way.” 

Sound of people running in multitudes for their safety was heard, children and women screamed. Some could not run at all because fear had engulfed their muscles and weakened them. They laid down helplessly and were at the mercy of their enemy. 

“Have you called the President? If he comes through, put him in the loudspeaker.” Tole said.

The security guard opened his drawer and pulled out bottles of water and gave one to Sofi who looked dehydrated. He knew he would be safe with these people because they work with the president. 

“Thank you for the water, what is your name?”

“You are welcome, I am Lembo, and am the head security here at CBD mall.”

The president came through and said, “Hey Brian are you safe? Where are you?”

“Mr. President, I am here at CBD mall with Tole, Sofi, and Lembo and you are on the loudspeaker.”

“Is Sofi okay, we need to evacuate her immediately and who is Lembo?”

Brian signals Lembo to speak, “Mr. President I am Lembo the head security at CBD mall.”

“That is great Mr. Lembo.”

Tole, “We are currently in the control room for this mall and we are pulling the outside CCTV camera to see what is going on.”

“Good talk to Pepo here.” Pepo took place and said, “I want access to that system, let Lembo connect me.”

Lembo connects the system to Pepo and they could see what was happening around the city. CBD mall is located at the center of the city and that is where the terrorist had begun their attack. At any point in time, the CBD area is always full of people going about their daily activities. 

Six buildings had been bombed and the terrorist had the audacity to go around shooting innocent people. The government had a very short time to respond and this footage gave them an advantage on how they will go about stopping the terrorist. 

“Sofi are you okay?” Pepo asked.

“Yes, I am okay but very scared.”

“No worries, in the next hour we will come and evacuate you guys just stay there. We need to finish with these mad people first before they hurt more people, okay? ”

“Okay.”

“Tole, I am now connected and can see all around the streets. They have moved towards Jogoo road and Kenyatta road. Let me come with my men and finish them.”

“Okay, all the best and kill them all. We shall be here watching.”

“Got you.”

Sofi laid herself to the sofa. Brian, Tole, and Lembo were keenly looking at the activities going on outside. The terrorist was thin, long men covered their faces and heads with an item of striped clothing. 

They moved from one building to another tactfully shooting at innocent people. They had bombed six buildings. Rafiki bank, Uzalendo building, Umoja building, Apex building, Lupe building, and Marashi plaza, all these buildings could accommodate many people at every time of the day. Pepo loaded rescue teams immediately, it is now fifteen minutes since the attack began. 

Pepo himself and a team of thirty went after the terrorist themselves with no guns this time but rather sharp swords. They enjoyed this one because they could fly and at the same time not be seen. The terrorist was twenty in number and had other teams waiting for them with cars to escape. 

The car’s tires were slashed by the soldiers and the driver’s eyes chopped off and were taken to custody. Those who were busy shooting people within the streets their heads were chopped off. When others saw that they started running towards their cars.

Reaching their cars, they were all in flames, and as they pondered what to do their heads parted their bodies.

At the control room of CBD mall, they saw all this, and Tole said, “This was fair for them, tit for tat is a fair game altogether.”

“Why do they come and start killing innocent people?” Lembo asked.

“These are delusional people, corrupt in the head, they have stupid reasons to justify their deeds,” Brian responded.

“What exactly are the reasons for them to do all this to us.”

“Most of them consider other people as unclean and thus deserve to die, religious reasons but they misinterpret the Quran, they seek revenge because the government soldiers always hunt them down, so they want our government to fill helpless that it cannot protect its people, and when they come to kill us they think Allah will bless them with virgins when they go to heaven, virgins with round eyes.”

“Where do they come from these people.”

“Most of them are from within and when recruited they are taken at the border of Kenya and Somalia for training and radicalizing them. We have the Boni forests and many other forests where these people hide.”

Suddenly the phone rang and Brian picked up, “Hey guys come out, we have a car waiting for you outside here.” Pepo said.

“Okay we are heading out we shall soon join you.”

They move out and Lembo immediately sees one of the terrorists aiming at them ready to shoot.

He blocks others from coming out and shouts, “Go back, go back, we have a terrorist outside here.”

They ran back and closed the door. The terrorist tries to shoot at the door but immediately Pepo and his team come in and capture him alive. 

“Get out we have him, we shall go with him for interrogation.”

They came out and Sofi was taken back home as Brian and Tole went to the office for further tasks. Lembo was to join the taskforce team because he demonstrated great skill and the nation needed his talent. 

Two hundred people died and seven hundred people were injured severely. Mshapa requested the injured to be treated by the army with their procedure where the patient is dipped in a basin and all his body covered with a special concoction. When they woke up the next day their wounds were no more, broken bones were back to normal. 

That week was very sad for the nations, property worth billions of money was lost and people lost their loved ones. Two hundred people were so many to die just in a day, children, women, and men died.

Citizens were angry about this and demanded justice as soon as possible. The government focused on rebuilding the city as they orchestrated a way that they will deal with the issue of terrorists in the country. They had captured one of them and was seriously being interrogated. 

The country was given three days to moan the dead. A special ceremony for the dead was conducted and present was the president, his wife Flora, vice president Lucia, Pepo, and other government officials.

Mshapa showed how devastated he was and promised how he will clear all the terrorists in order to honor the dead. People wailed in pain as the ceremony to bury the deceased carried on. Citizens were hurt and scared at the same time. The government was really blamed for such a tragedy. 

This blame and insults from the people made Mshapa and Pepo very angry and vowed to kill all the terrorists available in the city.

The city was disrupted, the six buildings had to be rebuilt, there were rumors that the attack was sponsored by Yunus and Salama who were previously ousted out. The government did not though confirm these allegations. 

At the statehouse.

Tole enters the office and sees Lembo seated in front of huge screens of computers.

“Hello, my brother, welcome to the team, though we shall introduce you officially when we shall be having a meeting.”

“Thank you very much, thank you for your recommendations, it has always been my dream to serve my nation at this capacity.”

“Great, I will give you a piece of advice, whatever happens inside these walls always stays here. Are you married.”

“No, I am single.”

“I see, your girls should never know what you do, you better tell them you are a cleaner in this office.”

They both laughed hard because he knew what exactly he meant. Lembo was very tall, handsome, and very attractive and Tole knew he must be having lots of girls in his life.
