Chapter 1
" She's the new intern, from Sydney and Co Law Firm", one of the interns in the second office said.
He was John, a tall, light skinned guy in his late twenties. He had been working at the firm for close to five years.
" She's so lucky. Who knows, she may have slept with one of the men at the top", Danny said, adjusting the swivel chair.
" Danny! How could you say such a thing? Let's just say she's lucky".

The cab pulled up at the garage. Jane clutched her portfolio tightly, her knuckles turning white. Her heart was racing, and her palms were sweaty. She was wearing her best suit, and she hoped she looked professional.
As she approached the building, she could see the towering glass doors, and she tried to steady her breathing. She was nervous, but she knew that she had to put her best foot forward. She took a deep breath, and stepped through the doors.
Jane had only worked at smaller firms. She had never seen such a magnificent building. If not for the help of the former attorney general at one of the firms she had auditioned for, she wouldn't have ever gotten the opportunity to work here.
She walked into the reception hall of the building, it was quite different from what she had pictured. The hall was a bit long, with a large number of chairs to accommodate a lot of people.
"Good morning ma'am", Jane greeted the lady at the first table.
The lady looked up from the computer.
" Good morning. I presume you're the new intern, Jane Clark", the lady said, examining her from head to toe.
" Yes, I am", Jane managed to maintain her composure.
The lady took out a large file from the drawer. She quickly flipped through the pages.
" Your office is at the second floor, the fourth room". She closed the file and replaced it in the drawer.
" Thank you ma", Jane greeted curtly.
" It's Genevieve", the receptionist smiled at her.
" Ohh, thank you, Genevieve".
Jane walked out of the reception hall, looking around for signs of the elevator. The hallway was wide and long, and she dreaded getting lost.
" Watch your steps, young lady", came a cold voice.
Jane looked up. She had bumped into someone, and the envelope containing her documents fell, scattering the papers all over the place.
She was lost. The man standing in front of her was tall, with sharp, angular features. His eyes were cold and calculating, and his mouth was set in a thin, tight line.
He was impeccably dressed, with a tailored suit and a crisp white shirt. He had a stillness about him, like a predator waiting to strike. There was no warmth in his gaze, no hint of empathy. He was the embodiment of cold, ruthless ambition.
"Did she just bump into Mr CEO?!", An intern whispered in awe.
"How careless could she be, on her first day of work", another intern said.
"It's such a pity, he'd have her fired. Such grave offence", a guy said.
Hearing the whispers from around, Jane finally found her tongue.
"I.. I'm sorry sir. I was just looking around for the elevator. It was.. a mistake", she stuttered.
The CEO glared at her, then at the interns who had gathered.
"Get back to work, now", he commanded, a tone of strictness in his voice.
They scampered back to their offices, each surprised at how the CEO reacted.
In the past, he fired a lot of people who had bumped into him or were in his path. It was really surprising how he overlooked this incident.
Jane, scared at how much authority he had exuded, didn't know what else to do, other than apologize. "I'm very sorry sir, I'll make sure to be more careful next time".
He has already left.
She hurriedly packed the documents into the file and rushed into the elevator. Her heart pounded real fast. The scene kept replaying in her head.
The elevator stopped on the second floor. Jane stepped out, holding her bag and the file firmly.
Her office was the fourth room on the second floor. She located it immediately and walked to the room.
"She's so naive", someone said from inside.
Jane stopped in her track.
" She only bumped into him, it's not some big deal", a lady replied.
Jane knocked, then pushed the door open. The trio turned towards the door.
" Good morning ", she smiled." I'm Jane , Jane Clark, the new intern".
The lady sitting at the right end of the office walked up to her.
" Lisa Morgan, you're welcome ", she stretched out her hand for a handshake.
"Thank you", Jane replied.
" That's Benny", Lisa pointed at the guy standing by the shelf. "And he's Donald", she pointed at the second guy sitting by the window.
" I see", she waved at them.
?️
" The files are incomplete, what do you have to say about that?", Jayden fired at his secretary.
" Sir, I..I counted them on my way up here, they were .. they were complete", Clara stuttered, not sure of what to say.
" Oh really, I guess I'm the one lying here", his eyes shot up." Maybe you should count them properly ", he said, stuffing the files into her hands.
She counted them, they were incomplete.
" Two files are missing", she said, retreating from the table.
" I should replace you as soon as possible", he said coldly.
Clara quietly walked out of the CEO's office, her head down.
She had been his secretary for about a year, and she rendered her services competently.
Things however took a tragic turn after she got married. Her husband was a chronic womanizer and a drug addict. He would always beat her at every slightest opportunity, inflicting injuries on her.
The physical and emotional torture she faced caused her to lag in her work.
?️
" Would you mind having lunch with us", Benny walked to Jane 's table.
" Just a minute, let me round up with this..", she said, her gaze intently fixed on the desktop.
Ten minutes later, she was done.
" Sorry I needed to finish the work and send it in for review", she apologized to Benny.
" It's okay. Shall we? ", He led the way out.
" Can you tell me more about yourself?", Benny asked as they strolled to the cafeteria for lunch.
Jane entwined her fingers.
" There's nothing much".
" What do you mean?", Benny looked surprise.
" It's not something I'd like to talk about, it brings back old memories".
" I'm sorry".
The walk to the cafe was a silent one.
" Spaghetti and sauce with a bottle of soda please", Benny ordered as they entered the cafe.
" Any light meal would be fine", Jane said calmly.
?️
" Schedule the meeting with the new firm, then .. ", Jayden suddenly looked up. His secretary looked absentminded.
" Clara? ", He called out loudly.
" I'm sorry sir, what were you saying? ", Clara shivered.
" I'll ask the receptionist to have you replaced, immediately".
He picked up the telecom and dialed some numbers. The call was a brief one, and the receptionist rushed into his office.
" I need her to be replaced with someone more efficient", he said to the receptionist with an air of authority.
" Uhm.. okay sir".
?️
" You've been cold since we returned from the cafeteria, what's up?", Benny asked Jane , feeling concerned.
" I'm fine, I guess I've exceeded my limit for the day. I'll just pack up and leave", Jane stood up, putting her things together.
The door was opened. Genevieve walked in.
"Miss Jane , the CEO asked to see you".
Jane looked up in shock.
" What? Why?! If it's about what happened earlier, tell him I'm sorry, it won't happen again", she bursted out.
Genevieve laughed a bit." Far from that. He needed a replacement for his secretary, he found you worthy of the post ".
" I.. I don't understand. What do you mean? ", Jane asked, her eyes glowing.
" You'll be his new secretary ".
Jane 's jaw dropped.
