1.The Blood-Stained Ledger
The scent of rain-soaked asphalt and expensive cologne filled the penthouse office, but all Elena could focus on was the heavy, gold-trimmed fountain pen resting between her trembling fingers. Across the massive mahogany desk sat Dante De Luca. He didn’t look like a businessman, despite the immaculate three-piece Tom Ford suit. He looked like what he was: the undisputed underboss of the De Luca syndicate, a man whose reputation was built on cold calculation and unyielding ruthlessness. "Sign it, Elena," Dante said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through her core. "We both know you don’t have a choice." Elena looked down at the heavy bond paper. The words Marital Contract and Asset Alignment stared back at her in stark black ink. She was the daughter of a ruined man. Her father, Arthur Vance, had tried to embezzle from the De Luca family to cover his gambling debts. A fatal mistake. Her father was currently "missing"—a polite term in their world for resting at the bottom of the Hudson River—and his staggering thirty-million-dollar debt had fallen squarely on her shoulders. She had no money, no allies, and the rival Bratva family was already circling her like vultures, looking to use her as leverage against Dante’s territory. Dante had offered her a terrifying lifeline: a marriage of convenience. For one year, she would play the part of his doting, elegant wife. Her presence would soften his image for the old-school commission members who valued "family stability," and in exchange, her father's debt would be erased, and the De Luca soldiers would guarantee her protection. "One year," Elena whispered, her voice stronger than she felt. She looked up, meeting his piercing, slate-gray eyes. "No physical intimacy. We live in separate wings. And the moment the clock strikes midnight on the 365th day, I walk away with my freedom and a clean slate." Dante leaned back, a ghost of a smirk playing on his lips, though his eyes remained entirely devoid of warmth. "Those are the terms we agreed upon. I am a man of my word, mia cara. But remember, while you wear my ring, you belong to the De Luca name. You attend every gala, you smile for the cameras, and you make the world believe I am the only man who matters to you. If you slip up, if the media or my enemies suspect this is a sham, the deal is off. And the Bratva will find you within the hour." Elena swallowed the lump of fear in her throat. She lowered the pen to the paper. Elena Vance. Her signature looked delicate next to his bold, aggressive scrawl. The moment the ink dried, Dante stood up, towering over her. He adjusted his cuffs, revealing the dark ink of a stylized crow tattoo peeking out from beneath his sleeve—the mark of a killer. He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a velvet box, snapping it open. Inside sat a flawless, emerald-cut black diamond ring. He didn't wait for her to take it. He grabbed her left hand, his grip surprisingly warm but firm as iron, and slid the heavy band onto her ring finger. The contrast of the dark stone against her pale skin felt like a brand. "Welcome to the family, Elena De Luca," Dante murmured, his thumb brushing lightly over her knuckles, sending an involuntary shiver down her spine. "Pack your bags. My men are clearing out your apartment as we speak. You move into the estate tonight." Before she could protest the speed of it all, the heavy double doors of the office burst open. Dante’s chief enforcer, a scarred man named Marco, rushed in, his face tight with tension. "Boss, we have a problem. The Bratva just caught wind of the signing. They’ve locked down the perimeter of the Vanni hotel downtown, and they know Elena is with you. They're setting up an ambush." Dante didn’t blink. His demeanor shifted instantly from corporate executive to lethal commander. He unbuttoned his jacket, reaching into his shoulder holster to check his firearm. "They think they can corner me in my own city?" Dante growled, turning his gaze back to Elena. Her face had gone completely white. He stepped closer, gripping her chin gently but firmly, forcing her to look at him. "Stay behind me, listen to my voice, and do exactly what I tell you. Do you understand?" Elena nodded dumbly, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Good," Dante said, drawing a sleek black pistol from his suit. "Let's see how much blood our wedding guests are willing to spill."
