Chapter Twenty-Three One afternoon, not long after Mrs Lockhart’s party, Judith was in the lingerie section of the town’s best department store. She prided herself in having good taste in underwear, and habitually spent more than she could afford on very good quality garments. As she was idly running her hand through a rack of frilly knickers she glanced up and saw, on the other side of the rack, a fellow guest from Mrs Lockhart’s party. “I hope I am not intruding,” Judith said, “but were you not at the party the other night? The one with the auctions?” Philippa coloured slightly.
