1. Broken Hearts
As dawn broke, I stepped onto the balcony, enveloped by the soft luminescence that painted the cityscape before me like a canvas of contrasts.
The gentle light danced across rooftops, casting long shadows that stretched and yawned like awakening giants.
I breathed deeply, feeling crisp air fill my lungs, heavy with damp earth's scent and the promise of a new day.
But amidst the beauty, the atmosphere remained oppressive, weighed down by war's burden.
Our land had known no peace for what felt like an eternity.
My gaze drifted to the distant hill, testament to our sacred territory's enduring beauty – the ancestral home of the Autumn Pack.
For millennia, our pack had roamed these lands, living in harmony with nature's cycles.
Yet, our homeland now bore scars from relentless conflict with vampires. Their attacks still lingered in my mind, etched like fresh wounds.
My father, the alpha, led our pack with a heavy heart, his kind nature worn down by constant battles.
Lost in thought, I stood frozen as the creaking door signaled Father's entrance.
His sunken eyes reflected the weight of responsibility. Exhaustion etched on his face, he trudged into the shared sitting room and collapsed into a chair.
Mother's gaze shifted, concern mingling with understanding. She knew that look all too well – the pack's struggles bearing down on him.
With a deep breath, Father spoke, his words hanging like a dark cloud:
"Ten dead bodies arrived this morning." Shock coursed through me; a gasp tore from my throat.
Mother spun around, surprise etched on her face.
"What did you say?" she asked, rushing to his side.
"Brian, Daylen, and the wall keepers... are dead."
My eyes widened; my feet wobbled beneath me.
Mother's hand flew to her mouth.
"How could you be so reckless, Alex? You sent them out, despite my pleas to keep them safe!" Her voice cracked.
Father's expression turned defensive.
"I had to, Zena. We can't wait for vampire attacks. I must protect our pack."
I swallowed hard, knowing Father wouldn't back down.
"Protect our pack?" Mom's voice rose, laced with anguish.
"You call sending our sons to their death protection? Brian and Daylen were just children, Alex! They shouldn't have been on the front lines yet!"
Dad's expression hardened.
"They were trained, Zee. They knew the risks. I did this to keep us safe."
Mom's pacing quickened.
"Safe? Ten dead bodies, Alex! Ten young lives lost because of your stubbornness!" Her voice cracked, anger mingling with pain.
Dad sighed, his eyes reflecting weary resolve.
"You can't just sit back and criticize me when you don't know what it's like to lead in a time like this, Zee."
I felt Dad's concealed pain, my heart aching. I longed to hug him like I did when I was five, but I can't.
Mom's voice simmered down, but her words cut deep.
"I don't need to be an alpha to know you're making reckless decisions, Alex.
You're sacrificing our future."
I swallowed hard, fighting back tears.
"I'm not sacrificing anything, Zee, I'm an Alpha who cares for his pack. I'll always choose them over this family, including you."
"Alex?" She exclaimed in shock.
"Don't overreact about a common death. I need peace." Dad concluded.
I saw the disappointment in my mother's eyes as she stopped in front of father.
" I never thought you'd be this cold towards your family. You're becoming a—"
"Enough!" Dad's fury cut her off. His face reddened, veins bulging.
I cringed.
"I'm doing everything to keep our pack alive," Dad continued, his tone unyielding.
"You have no idea the pressure I'm under, the weight of responsibility."
"I have no idea?" Mom started
"You and I know how long it took my sister to have those boys. You raised them after Ryan passed on. We watched them grow into brave young men. And now they're gone, because of your rash decisions."
"My rash decisions? You think I wanted this? You think I wanted to lose those boys, or do you think you loved them more than I did?"
His words hung in the air like a challenge.
The room fell silent, heavy with tension. The only sound was the labored breathing of my parents.
I wished they'd end this, but Dad's Alpha pride wouldn't let him back down.
"You're cold now," Mom said.
"A stranger to me, a shadow of the man I loved. You no longer love your family, Alex."
Dad's expression softened, his voice calming like still waters.
"You're right, Zee. I'm not the same man you fell in love with. This war has changed me."
"That's just an excuse, Alex. You're using the war to justify your actions, and it's not becoming. Why can't you listen to me for once? You've become too stubborn, too arrogant."
Dad's calm facade shattered.
"You will not decide what befits my actions, woman!" He rose to his feet, anger blazing in his eyes again.
"I've had enough of this foolishness," he thundered.
"I'm the king around here, and you have no right to question my actions!"
"You may be a king, Alex," she began,
"but I was a mother to those boys – the ones you so callously destroyed."
The air was heavy with tension, the silence between them a chasm of hurt and anger.
I felt it too – the pain of losing what you love. Mom took a step closer.
"Since when did you become this bad? I married a man, not a beast, and you have become so..."
Her voice caught in her throat as Dad grasped her arm, he slammed her into the nearby wall, his face contorted into a half-man, half-beast visage.
Three veins bulge on his forehead, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
His body expanded, muscles bulging as he loomed over her. His wolf surfaced, seeking respect.
"You will speak to me with respect," he growled, voice low and menacing.
"If you need my respect, O king, then you should earn it," Mom spat.
Dad's grip tightened, Mom's sharp cry echoed through the room.
She struggled against his hold, her body arching in a futile attempt to break free.
Her eyes flashed yellow, pupils dilating as her wolf rose to the surface.
But Dad's grip only tightened. A line of blood trickled down Mom's arm.
I had never seen this ferocious side of my father against his mate.
He treated me poorly, but I never expected him to go this far with mom– baring his extended teeth at her? O Dear goddess.
Fear enveloped my heart like a stark water body.
My grip on the railings tightened until my knuckles turned white.
I couldn't risk entering their room, but standing there, witnessing the chaos, was unbearable.
"Had I known," Mom spoke up, between gritted teeths,
"I would never have wasted my love on an animal like you!"
A stinging slap across her face shattered the tension.
I watched in horror as mother's body flew into the king-sized bed frame.
The force of the impact left her reeling, gasping for her next breath.
"Enough!" Dad thundered.
"Stoppp!" I yelled, my voice trembling.
I sprinted full force into their room, the porch door bursting open behind me.
I rushed to help resuscitate her, her face was pale white from lack of oxygen.
But just as I reached her, a stifling pain exploded in my head, jolting me into a different reality.
In split seconds, I hung mid-air, my father's grip on my hair like a vice.
Pain coursed through me, and I froze, fearing more agony.
"How dare you enter my space uninvited? Have you no respect?" He snarled, baring his teeth's at me.
I whispered, "I-im so sorry, d-dad, please."
Tears streamed down my face as my legs flailed.
But his grip tightened. His fingers tangled deeper into my hair.
Blood trickled from my nose at the impact of my pain, I glanced at Mom, who was now awestruck at the sight before her.
I shut my eyes, trembling.
"P-please, Dad, don't hurt me anymore."
But his voice cut through my plea.
"If you had played your part, your cousins would still be alive and that woman you call a mother would not disregard me!"
He yelled in my face.
Until this moment I would've sworn my father still loved my mother, his Luna but right now…
"Please!" I wailed, my voice cracking under the pain.
He threw me against the wall, and I cried out.
His feral growl filled the air as he punched the door, leaving a hollow in its frame.
He stood in silence, his face down, unable to meet Mom's gaze.
The silence was oppressively heavy, but finally, he spoke.
"We will convene a solemn assembly and lay our dead to rest."
With that, he turned and walked away, the door creaking shut behind him.
I looked up at Mom, her face streaked with tears and mascara.
Her red-rimmed eyes locked onto mine.
She beckoned me closer, and I forced myself to move.
"I'm so sorry, Mom... I'm so sorry about Dad and the boys." I whispered amidst tears
Mom's face contorted in pain as she pulled me into a tight embrace.
"I want to make it right, Mom. I want to help us overcome all these," I muttered, sobbing. She stroked my hair gently and heaved a sigh.
"Willow, sweetie... give it time."
When her hand fell from my head, I looked up to see her eyes closed, she went still.
I held her close, but she didn't stir.
"Mom?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
No response.
I shook her gently, but she remained motionless, I tried again, yet she remained still.
Panic set in, I quickly felt for a pulse, but my trembling fingers could find none.
