Alpha Maddox POV
As alpha of my pack I rarely have to do mundane tasks like grocery shopping or errands unrelated to Alpha duties but sometimes a guy just wants a Pop Tart and some Frosted Flakes. It's not that I don't appreciate the kitchen staff and other omegas that work hard to feed our pack fresh meals everyday but sometimes you just need some high fructose corn syrup.
We have a grocery store in pack territory but I didn't want any of the pack to see me shopping and think something was wrong. It could make me look like a weak alpha or unappreciative of how hard my pack members work. So I opted to go to town to a mostly human store.
As I put my truck in park my wolf started pacing. I was confused by this. I'm an alpha. Why would some simple grocery shopping among humans make my wolf anxious?
"Reid, what's going on?"
Reid is my wolf. I've had him since I was 16. Early for a werewolf but not for a wolf of alpha blood. My parents thought i got him early because i was supposed to find my mate sooner or something. Well 6 years have passed. I still have no mate and nothing has happened that would give any clue as to why my wolf came to me when it did. I don't regret it though. Reid has been so wonderful in helping me with my confidence as a leader and person. Which is exactly why his pacing has me concerned.
*I don't know. Something feels…different today.*
"Ok. That's not telling me much buddy. Do I need to just turn around and go hom…"
*NO.*
He growled. I was shocked at his response and attitude towards me.
"Sheesh. Calm down. Damned if I do, damned if I don't."
*Shut up human. Just go inside. I feel like the answer is in there.*
I shrugged my shoulders and got out. I just wanted Pop Tarts and some Frosted Flakes. I wasn't expecting this outing to become a whole thing. Maybe Reid senses other wolves but can't be sure because they are hiding their scents. That's common for some wolves that have decided to integrate into human society.
I walk into the store and am hit with the most amazing smell. It smells of rain in the forest. It's calling to me so much that Reid is coming to the surface. I lean my head into the smell and follow it. I round the corner of the cereal aisle and that's when I see her. Reid is so close to the surface. He causes me to sniff the air one more time to make sure the smell is coming from her. I willed myself and Reid to calm down. I took 4 long confident steps in her direction. I just needed to be close to her. I looked down into her eyes and Reid said what i already knew.
*MATE*
"Hello there little one."
Alpha Maddox POV
I knew I needed to get out of there quickly. The confined space, her scent, the f*****g Frosted Flakes, it was all too much and driving me and Reid mad. Think Maddox Think.
*Ask her to lunch.*
Yes. That's my boy. Thinking when I can't.
*But you should probably ask her name first*
Right. Yes. Don't be rude. Just be… confident. You're a f*****g Alpha for f***s sake.
"May I ask your name beautiful?"
She had the most beautiful big brown eyes. Skin buttery brown like she was molded from the finest milk chocolate. Goddess, I wonder if she tasted as good as she looked and smelled.
*Focus human.*
"...Callie"
"Mmm…Callie."
I didn't mean to repeat it back to her but her voice was the most beautiful I'd ever heard and just feeling her name roll off my tongue had me at attention. Reid was purring her name over and over again in my head.
"It is very good to meet you Callie. I'm Maddox. This is obviously abrupt and completely sudden but would you like to go to lunch with me? My treat."
I expected her to say no. I was a complete stranger and from the looks of it, she was a complete human. f**k. She's human. She doesn't feel the mate bond. She's gonna say no.
"Yes."
I'm shocked but I don't let it show. Maybe she can feel the bond afterall.
"Great. I know just the place."
I make sure to exude pure confidence. I grab her hand and start walking to the car, leaving her no chance to change her mind. s**t. She had groceries in that cart… should I at least let her check out?
*And let her come to her senses and run away from us… *
The thought of her leaving now, afraid of us, made my heart hurt and only deepening my resolve to make sure this was a lunch she'd never forget.
