CHAPTER 11 – EFFORTS AND MISSTEPS
After that morning, Williams stopped pretending everything was under control.
Because it wasn’t.
For the first time, he started doing what he should have done earlier—showing up properly.
Not with words.
With actions.
He started looking for Amelia more intentionally.
Not in a desperate way… but in a consistent one.
He attended her department hangout spots.
He asked mutual classmates simple questions.
He even changed his usual routes just to increase the chances of seeing her.
But Amelia wasn’t making it easy.
She wasn’t being rude.
She was just… unavailable.
When they finally crossed paths again, it was near the cafeteria.
Amelia was coming out with a small group of friends when she saw him standing to the side.
She paused briefly.
Then I continued walking.
Williams moved quickly.
“Amelia,” he called.
Her friends slowed down, sensing tension, but she raised a hand slightly.
“I’ll catch up,” she told them calmly.
They hesitated, then left her behind.
Just like that, it was only the two of them again.
Williams stepped closer.
“I’ve been trying to reach you,” he said.
Amelia nodded lightly. “I noticed.”
That response was calm.
Too calm.
It made him uneasy.
“I’m not giving up on this,” he said quietly.
Amelia looked at him properly.
Not surprised.
Not emotional.
Just observing.
“On what exactly?” she asked.
That question hit him again.
Because he realized something uncomfortable:
He still hadn’t clearly defined what he wanted.
Williams exhaled.
“I want us,” he said finally.
Simple.
Direct.
Honest.
For a second, there was nothing but silence between them.
Amelia didn’t smile.
She didn’t soften.
She just looked at him for a long moment.
Then she said quietly:
“You want us… but only after I stopped chasing you.”
That sentence landed hard.
Williams frowned slightly. “That’s not fair.”
Amelia tilted her head.
“Neither was the waiting,” she replied.
No anger.
Just the truth.
A pause stretched between them.
People moved around them, unaware that something important was hanging in the air.
Williams lowered his voice.
“I didn’t realize what I had until I started losing it,” he admitted.
Amelia nodded slowly.
“That’s usually how it happens.”
He took a step closer.
“I don’t want to lose you,” he said more firmly.
This time, Amelia didn’t step back.
But she didn’t step forward either.
She stayed exactly where she was.
Balanced.
Controlled.
Guarded.
“I hear you,” she said softly.
Then she added:
“But hearing you and trusting you again are not the same thing.”
That difference mattered.
And they both knew it.
Williams ran a hand through his hair, frustrated—not with her, but with himself.
“So what do I do?” he asked.
Amelia looked at him for a long moment.
Then answered simply:
“Be consistent… even when I stop reacting to it.”
A pause.
Then she added:
“Because I’m not going back to who I was before.”
That was the shift.
Not rejection.
Not acceptance.
A condition.
A boundary.
A warning that she was no longer emotionally available in the same way.
Williams nodded slowly.
Not because he agreed fully…
But because he finally understood the cost.
As Amelia turned to leave again, she paused briefly.
Not looking back.
Just speaking over her shoulder.
“I’m not against you, Williams,” she said quietly.
Then continued:
“I’m just choosing myself now.”
And then she walked away.
Williams stayed where he was.
But this time, he didn’t follow immediately.
Because for the first time…
He realized love wasn’t just about wanting someone.
It was about proving you could be trusted after the wanting became real.
