CHAPTER 12 – EXTERNAL PRESSURE After Amelia walked away that day, Williams didn’t chase her again immediately. Not because he stopped caring… But because he finally understood that chasing without change meant nothing. So instead, he started doing something harder. He stayed consistent. Quietly. Without forcing moments. Without dramatic interruptions. Without trying to corner her emotions. Just presence. Even when she didn’t respond. Even when she didn’t look his way. Amelia noticed. Of course she did. But she didn’t react the way she used to. No softening. No quick conversations. No emotional openings. Just controlled distance. Like she was testing whether consistency could survive without attention. But then something changed. It started on a Wednesday afternoon. Amelia was leaving the faculty building when she saw a small group gathered near the notice board. Her name was mentioned in passing. That made her stop. Slowly, she walked closer. And what she saw made her pause longer than expected. It was a departmental project selection list. And beside one of the top groups… was Daniel’s name. The same Daniel Williams had seen talking to her before. “Hey, Amelia,” Daniel’s voice came from behind her. She turned. He was smiling like usual, relaxed. “I didn’t know you were interested in the project group too,” he said. “I’m not,” she replied simply. Daniel laughed lightly. “Well, I ended up picking a group that needed one more person… I actually suggested your name.” That made her blink slightly. “You did what?” she asked. Before Daniel could answer properly, Williams appeared from behind the crowd. He had heard enough. His expression wasn’t loud—but it was sharp. “Why her name?” Williams asked directly. Daniel looked at him, still calm. “Because she’s good,” he replied. “We’ve talked a few times. I think she’d be perfect for the group.” Amelia immediately noticed the shift in Williams’ expression. It wasn’t anger. It was something more controlled. Something deeper. “I don’t remember agreeing to that,” Amelia said, looking between them. Daniel shrugged lightly. “You don’t have to decide now. It’s just a suggestion.” Williams stepped forward slightly. “That’s not the point,” he said. Daniel raised an eyebrow. “Then what is?” Silence. Amelia stepped in before it escalated. “Stop,” she said calmly. Both of them looked at her. That single word carried weight. She turned to Daniel first. “I’ll think about the project,” she said. Then she turned to Williams. “And you don’t get to speak for me.” That last line was quiet. But firm. Daniel nodded and stepped back slightly. “Alright. No problem.” Then he left them alone. The moment he was gone, silence filled the space again—but it wasn’t peaceful. It was tense. Williams exhaled slowly. “I don’t like him,” he admitted. Amelia crossed her arms slightly. “That’s not my problem.” That answer hit him. Because it showed how far she had moved emotionally. “You’re really okay being around him?” Williams asked. Amelia looked at him properly. “I’m okay being around anyone who respects my space,” she said. A pause. Then she added: “Something you’re still learning.” That sentence landed deeper than intended. Williams looked away briefly. Not in defeat… But in realization. Amelia softened her tone slightly—but only slightly. “I’m not choosing sides,” she said. “I’m choosing balance.” Williams looked back at her. “And where does that leave me?” he asked quietly. Amelia hesitated for a second. Then answered honestly: “Where you place yourself.” That was the difference now. Before, he had space automatically. Now, he had to earn it without expectation. As Amelia walked away, Williams stayed behind, watching her leave again. But this time, something else was also present. Not just jealousy. Not just frustration. But competition. Not with Daniel alone… But with the version of himself she no longer trusted. And for the first time in a long while… Williams realized he wasn’t just trying to win her attention anymore. He was trying to become someone she wouldn’t need to protect herself from.
