Chapter 1
My mother grabbed my arm and yanked me aside, her face tight with worry.
"Sweetheart, we know nothing about this child. How can you just hand our pack over to them?"
I gave her a calm smile. "Don't worry. I know what I'm doing."
"Stop this. You can see it's a trap." She shouted the words and stepped between Kael and me.
"You're acting like a crazed wolf right now." My father steadied my mother and joined in on me.
"Nora, handing the pack to you was the worst mistake we've ever made."
"Relax, Nora." Kael walked up to me and took my hand with deliberate care. "I swear to you, he will respect you like a mother for the rest of his life."
"Nora, thank you so much for accepting my child." Rosaline stepped out from the crowd and took my other hand.
I looked at the two of them and couldn't hold back my laugh.
I had known it would come to this.
Kael was a rogue I found on a hunt during my coming-of-age ceremony. That day, he had been torn apart by other rogues, left with barely a breath, lying there waiting to die.
I begged my alpha father to let him join the pack. He was warm, attentive, and gentle. Nothing like the wolves around me. I fell for him hard.
After my father announced he was stepping down, I signed a contract with Kael and made him the new alpha of my pack. We promised each other a grand bonding ceremony to celebrate.
But ever since Rosaline joined the pack, Kael kept taking her off into the woods alone to hunt.
"The way she looks at you, it's like she wants something to happen between you two." I couldn't take it anymore.
"I've known her since my rogue days. She's a strong warrior. If you suspect our own pack members that way, what will they think of you?" Kael had only looked at me with contempt back then.
I understand now. Those words were nothing but lies he fed me.
I watched them both with cold eyes. Kael always used his alpha status as an excuse to keep his distance from me, claiming he had to maintain his image. Yet now his arm was wrapped snug around Rosaline's waist.
The two of them looked like the real couple.
"We grew up together. We're practically blood. You don't need to worry about a thing. I'll take good care of him." Rosaline draped her arm over Kael's shoulder. Her voice sounded almost pitiful. "But if this makes you uncomfortable, I can leave."
"How could it? Nora isn't that kind of person. She knows what happened between us was purely an accident." Kael grabbed her arm with force. Rosaline tumbled into his chest. "If she can't accept you, then I can't stay in this pack either."
I looked at the three of them, my voice steady.
"Oh. So the two of you decided to drop a child in my lap." I let out a cold laugh.
