Sticks and Stones
It is a normal Saturday morning in Reed District. Some cars are already hitting the road and people start to go out of their houses to do whatever they have planned for today. However, a slightly different thing happens in Tyler McSheer's house. "Tyler! Tylerrrrrrr!" "I am coming. I said I am coming." "You have said the exact same words 20 minutes ago but you're still up there. If you're not coming down here then I'll be the one to go up there." "I said, I am coming mom." Footsteps can be heard on the stairs as Tyler goes down quickly. "Breakfast is ready. Did you sleep late again last night?" "No mom I didn't. As a matter of fact I slept earlier." Tyler said as he sits on his chair. "Oh really?" "Yeah, really. I wasn't even able to go and say Hi to my friends on our group chat because I really wanted to sleep early." he said while slicing a piece of bacon. "You know son, your dad and I will really appreciate it if you stop lying and tell us the truth." Tyler looked at his mom straight without saying a word. "Anything to say?" his mom said with an eyebrow raised. (Clears throat) "Ahmm, actually, I did play some games." he said and smiled. "Some games? For how long?" his dad asked. (Inhales and exhales deeply) " I can't actually  remember how long it was. Yeah, I can't remember." (continued eating bacon) "You can't remember?" his dad said while reading the newspaper and flips some pages of it. "You can't remember what kept you up until 3 am?" he added. "3am?" he said with a shocked looked on his face. " I can't remember I was still up by that time dad. Maybe I was." "Maybe you were, or perhaps you really were. I saw your download activity last night and I saw that you downloaded 2 games each with a playing history around 2am to 3am. So who do you think might be using your phone at the early of hours of day? his dad replied. Tyler stopped eating as if he remembers something. "Oh yeah I remember now thanks dad" he said and smiled. "We really do understand that you really wanted to play since it was Friday yesterday and that you really wanted to spend your weekends. But you don't have to lie over it. Besides, your mom and I have to go and buy some groceries at the mall. So, we want you to just stay here and don't leave the house." "Can I play some computer games?" "Yeah as long as you're not stepping out of that door." his mom replied. Tyler only nodded his head. After having their breakfast, Tyler sat on the couch in their living room while his dad prepares some things and his mom washing the dishes. "Mom" Tyler called out. "What is it?" "How can you even know that I am lying or saying something that's in contrary to what really happened?" "Why are you asking that question to your mom?" his dad said as he shaves his beard. "Nothing. I am just curious. Is it just because you saw my download history or there' some things that you could see or notice or feel, some kind of aura." "Let's just say. . .a person that's lying cannot really look into their interrogator's eyes." his mom said. "So if liars are that easy to catch, then why there are people that can easily go away with it without getting caught?" Tyler asked curiously. "Well, if you are talking about criminals, maybe. . . they found a way to get around it, to avoid being imprisoned." his mom replied while putting some of the plates on the rack. "That's unfair then. It makes me even think of, what if lawyers or judges or even the police, could have the power to dig into someone's past or mind by just looking straight into their eyes?" "Now that's ridiculous. The reason that humans weren't given that power, since powers are just fictional, is that humans tend to abuse them." "But it would serve a great purpose right?" Tyler asked. " Yeah exactly. But it also could give you millions of enemies just by telling or seeing what's inside their mind or past." his dad said as he put the shaver in its little box. " If there's a chance that you want to have a power or set of powers, what would you choose son?" his dad asked. "Powers?" Tyler repeated and motioned his hand to make him look like he's thinking. "I'd like to have the power to peek through time, see what was and what will be, but also I want to the kind of eyes that could see through every person I look at or even hold." Tyler added. "Wow, that weird but sounds nice as well." his mom said as she wipes her hands clean. "Why would you like that?" his dad asked. "I want to see why things turned out to be what they are now and even prepare for what's coming. The second one is to help people, no matter how dangerous it could be for me." "Okay Okay, enough of that power thing. We're not getting anything from it. So you better watch some movies on the TV now as we prepare to go to the grocery." his mom said. "Okay mom." Tyler immediately turned the TV on and browsed for movies that he would watch. His parents went to their room and closed the door. "He's starting to talk about powers Maya." "Jay, he is only 15, there is one year left before we tell him the truth." "Should we really wait for that? Look, he just stated some specific powers or abilities that he wanted to have. What if one day. . . ." "No Jay. Now is not the right time for him to know. I am telling you, now isn't the right time." (exhales deeply) "Okay. Okay." "We better get moving."
