Chapter 18 Kenna The water parted for Ken automatically. It rolled away from her like she was a heavy boulder tossed into the lake, except it didn’t come back. It simply waited for her to go to the final stones. She waded into the liquid, increasingly warmed by the sun. It would be a long walk—something like nine miles—but she didn’t care. It was a piece of cake compared to frigid temperatures and skin-melting acid. She made the journey at a steady pace, sloshing through the water from the Tanzania side, on the shoreline of Mahale Mountain National Park. She chose the location for its lack of potential witnesses, though she couldn’t be certain she would be alone the whole time. Tanganyika was a life source to ten million people. The longer she stayed, the more likely she would be seen.
