Chapter 001
~~~~~~~ Amara lay on the cold operating table, the sterile air biting against her skin. Every inch of her felt numb, except for the sharp pang in her heart. Her wolf stirred uneasily within her, pacing back and forth as if it too sensed the danger lurking in the room. The bright surgical lights overhead blinded her, intensifying her disorientation, and the distant, detached voices of the pack doctors echoed faintly, as though they were speaking underwater. It was a surreal nightmare, one she wished she could wake from. But there was no escape. The sterile smell of antiseptics burned her nose, and the cold metal table beneath her did little to provide comfort. She tried to calm her wolf, to keep her growing panic at bay, but it was futile. Her instincts screamed that something was wrong. And deep down, she knew what it was… Ronan. Her heart clenched at the thought of him: Ronan, the Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack. The man who had swept her off her feet, made her believe in love, inmates, and happily ever after. How naive she had been to believe that he was her true mate. How blind she had been to his manipulations. Even now, as she lay helpless, she could still hear his voice in her head, soothing, convincing her that everything he did was for the pack’s good — for her good. But she had come to learn the harsh truth, and it was a truth that shattered her. She had been nothing more than a pawn in his game. Her heart ached as she thought about how she had given everything to Ronan. She had trusted him, fallen for his charm, and believed in his words. He had been her savior, the one who took her in when she was abandoned by her own pack, an orphan with no future. She had thought he loved her, that he wanted to build a life with her. But now, it was clear. He never loved her. He never saw her as his mate. Her body trembled as she tried to hold back her tears, her chest rising and falling rapidly. The doctors continued their preparations, their movements methodical, their faces void of emotion. Amara could hear the clinking of instruments, the rustling of gowns, and the steady beeping of machines, all blending into one ominous sound that only amplified her despair. The pregnancy had been difficult from the start. Amara’s wolf had been restless, her body weak, but she had pushed through, hoping that bringing a child into the world would strengthen her bond with Ronan. That maybe, just maybe, it would make him see her for who she truly was — someone who loved him, someone who wanted to stand by his side, as an equal. But that hope had died the day she discovered the truth. Ronan hadn’t pursued her because she was his mate. He had used her. And worse, he had used their unborn child. A tear slid down her cheek, and she blinked furiously, refusing to let herself break down in front of those doctors who saw her as nothing more than a vessel. She clenched her fists, digging her nails into her palms as her mind replayed the conversation she had overheard between Ronan and Sienna, who was her twin sister... The woman Ronan truly loved. Amara felt a fresh wave of pain hit her. Sienna had always been the favored one, the beautiful, delicate twin. The one who everyone loved. Amara had lived in her shadow for as long as she could remember. She had tried to carve out her own identity, but it seemed that no matter what she did, Sienna would always outshine her. And now, Ronan had betrayed her for Sienna. The truth had come crashing down on Amara when she overheard Ronan talking to the pack healer. Sienna was dying. She had a rare illness, one that even the strongest werewolf healing abilities couldn’t cure. But Ronan had a plan. He had pursued Amara, not out of love or desire, but because of her bloodline. He believed that their child’s umbilical cord blood could save Sienna…it could heal her. She had been nothing more than a vessel to him and her child, just a means to an end. Amara’s heart shattered as the doctors continued their work. They were about to remove her child from her body, a baby that had been born too early, at just seven months. Her baby was fragile, too small to survive on its own, and yet, all Ronan cared about was getting the cord blood to save Sienna. The door to the operating room swung open, and Amara didn’t have to look to know who it was. Ronan. His presence filled the room, cold and commanding. She could hear his footsteps, heavy and deliberate, as he approached the doctors, ignoring her entirely. He didn’t ask how she was. He didn’t even glance at her. She was invisible to him now. “How much longer?” Ronan’s voice was clipped, impatient. The lead doctor, Dr. Myers, didn’t flinch under his gaze. “We’re almost there, Alpha. The cord blood will be ready shortly.” Amara’s heart pounded in her chest as she stared at the ceiling, her mind spinning. Her baby. What would happen to her baby? Would Ronan even let the child survive, or was the baby’s sole purpose to save Sienna? Tears welled up in her eyes again, and this time, she couldn’t stop them from falling. She felt a soft brush of movement inside her as if her baby was reaching out to her, a faint, fragile connection between mother and child. Her wolf whimpered inside her, helpless and powerless to protect what was hers. She tried to speak, to say something, anything, but her throat felt tight, her voice trapped inside her. The pain in her chest grew unbearable as she listened to the faint cries of her newborn. The sound was weak, but it was there, her child was alive…for now. “Take the cord blood immediately,” Ronan ordered, his voice cold and emotionless. Amara’s eyes widened, her heartbreak. She wanted to scream, to beg them not to take her baby, but her body wouldn’t respond. She was too weak, too broken. A nurse placed the baby in a small, heated crib, and for a moment, Amara dared to hope that maybe, just maybe, Ronan would soften. Maybe he would look at their child and see the life they had created together. But he didn’t. He didn’t even glance at the baby. His focus was solely on the nurse who was extracting the blood from the umbilical cord. His eyes, once warm and kind, were now hard, devoid of any emotion. The room was silent, save for the soft beeping of the machines and the quiet rustle of the doctors’ movements. Amara’s breaths came in shallow gasps as she watched Lucas turn his back on their child, his attention already on the door, ready to rush the blood to Sienna. And just like that, he was gone. Amara stared at the empty space where Ronan had stood, her mind numb with disbelief. How could this happen? How could the man she had loved, the man she thought was her mate, abandon her and their child so easily? The baby’s cries had faded, growing weaker by the second. Amara’s heart clenched as she looked at the crib, her vision blurred by tears. She had no strength left, no power to protect her child. Her wolf howled in agony, the pain of betrayal cutting deep into her soul. She had lost everything; her mate, her child, her future. All because of Ronan’s obsession with saving Sienna. As the doctors finished their work, Amara’s body began to shut down, the weight of exhaustion pulling her into unconsciousness. But before the darkness claimed her, one thought burned bright in her mind, a vow she whispered silently to herself. One day, Ronan would pay for what he had done, and when that day came, Amara would make sure he felt every ounce of the pain he had caused her. With that final thought, Amara closed her eyes, surrendering to the darkness. But her fight was far from over. It had just begun!
