Chapter 1
Ashley The day I walked away from the only man I had ever loved, I told myself I was saving him. But five years later, standing in the freezing marble lobby of his empire, I wasn’t so sure. The towering glass-and-steel monolith that screamed wealth and power, where even the air felt expensive. My breath fogged faintly in the overworked air-conditioning, my thin scarf doing little to block the chill that slid straight into my bones. I gripped the strap of my worn bag, fingers tight enough to ache. I shouldn’t be here. I told myself that at least ten times between the street and the elevator. And yet… here I was. The elevator hummed softly as it carried me toward the fifth floor, the place where my life might change or crumble again. My heart was a tight, erratic drumbeat in my chest. Every number that lit up on the panel made my stomach twist harder. I caught my reflection in the polished doors: pale cheeks, tired eyes, hair pulled back in a no-nonsense bun that was already losing the battle against humidity. You look like a woman begging for mercy. The doors slid open with a whisper. The reception area was all clean lines and muted colors, the kind of minimalism that cost a fortune. A beautiful blonde behind the desk glanced up, her lipstick a perfect, intimidating red. Her smile was polite until I gave her my name. “Ashley Jethro.” The syllables felt strange in this place, heavy with memories. Something flickered in her gaze, and her polite mask smoothed over even more. “One moment.” She picked up the phone, speaking in hushed tones. I couldn’t hear the words, but I didn’t need to. My stomach knew. “He’ll see you now,” she said finally, gesturing toward the frosted glass doors at the far end. I walked through, each step echoing in the silence. My palms were damp, but I forced myself to keep my chin high. Kieran Black. The name alone was enough to make my chest ache. He sat behind a sleek, dark desk, his profile to me, phone pressed to his ear. He wore power like a second skin sharp suit, crisp shirt, tie knotted with precision. His dark hair was just as I remembered: thick, slightly unruly at the edges, begging to be touched. I shoved the thought away. He glanced up mid-conversation, and the instant his eyes landed on me, his tone on the phone shifted cool, clipped. “I’ll call you back.” He hung up without waiting for an answer. “Ashley.” His voice was smooth, controlled. Dangerous. “This is… unexpected.” I swallowed hard. My mouth had gone dry. “Hello, Kieran.” His gaze swept over me in one slow, deliberate pass, as if cataloging every flaw, every sign of the years apart. I hated the way my heart stuttered under that scrutiny. “Why are you here?” he asked. Not a flicker of warmth in his tone. “I… need a job.” My voice sounded small in the vastness of his office. I straightened my shoulders. “Yours, specifically.” One dark brow arched. “Mine? After you walked out on me in front of three hundred people?” The memory stabbed like a knife. The gasps, the whispers, the look in his eyes shocked, furious, betrayed. I forced myself not to flinch. “I didn’t come here to” “No,” he cut in, leaning back in his chair. “You came here because you need something. Again.” “That’s not fair.” My nails dug into my palm. “My mother’s sick, Kieran. The treatments are expensive. I’ve tried everything else. I’m… desperate.” He didn’t blink. “Desperate suits you.” His words landed like a slap, but I held my ground. “I can help you,” I said, forcing steadiness into my voice. “I know how you work. I know this company. I can” “Stop.” He rose from his chair, moving toward me with slow, measured steps. Every inch of him radiated controlled power. When he stopped just a breath away, I caught the faint scent of his cologne wood, spice, something that pulled me back five years in an instant. His eyes, so dark they bordered on black, locked on mine. “Why should I give the woman who humiliated me the privilege of working for me?” My throat tightened. “Because I’m still the best person for the job. And because… you know I wouldn’t be here if I had any other choice.” Something shifted in his gaze just for a second. A c***k in the ice. Then his mouth curved, but it wasn’t a smile. “Fine. You can have the job.” Relief crashed over me, sharp and dizzying until he added, “But understand something, Ashley.” His voice dipped, low and dangerous. “This time,” he said, “I’m going to make you regret leaving me at the altar.”
