Chapter 1: The Betrayal
Isabella's POV I wandered aimlessly through the garden, seeking solace among the blooming flowers and the gentle rustle of leaves. My mind was a whirl of thoughts, but nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to overhear. From behind a row of neatly trimmed hedges, the muffled voices of my stepfather, Lord Harold, and a merchant reached my ears. Their conversation seemed urgent, and curiosity got the better of me. I edged closer, careful not to make a sound. "You understand, Harold, the Alpha King is not a man to be trifled with," the merchant said, his voice laced with urgency. "You owe him a great deal of money, and he expects it to be paid." "I know, I know," my stepfather replied, his tone agitated. "But I've found a solution. I’ll give him my stepdaughter, Isabella. She’s young, in good health, beautiful, and of noble blood. She will fetch a high price." My heart froze, a cold dread seeping into my bones. What?! He was planning to sell me to the ruthless Alpha King, Kade, to clear his debts. The reality of his words hit me like a physical blow, and I struggled to keep my breathing steady. The merchant seemed taken aback. "Are you sure about this, Harold? The girl might not take kindly to being sold off like livestock. Do you even know if she already likes someone else?." My step father scoffed. "I don't care about what she feels, she has no choice in the matter. Once she’s given him an heir, she’ll be free to leave. It’s a small price to pay for saving this estate." What? No! This couldn't be possible! I couldn’t listen any longer. I stumbled away, my mind reeling with disbelief and betrayal. How could he do this to me? The man who had promised my mother on her deathbed that he would take care of me was now selling me to settle his own failures. I felt as if the ground had been ripped out from under me. My legs trembled, barely able to support my weight. I found a secluded spot in the garden and sank to my knees, clutching the fabric of my dress as if it could somehow hold me together. Tears blurred my vision, and I let out a choked sob. The blooming roses around me seemed to mock my pain, their beauty a stark contrast to the anguish that tore at my heart. I had always known my stepfather was a man of many vices—gambling, drinking, and a penchant for extravagant living. But I had never imagined he would stoop so low as to sell me like a piece of property. Memories of my mother flooded my mind. She had been kind, loving, and selfless, always putting others before herself. She had begged Harold to look after me, and he had promised her he would. Now, that promise lay shattered at my feet. That night, the weight of the day's revelations hung heavily over me. I could barely eat, the thought of my impending fate making every bite feel like lead. As the house settled into its usual quiet, I knew I had to confront him. I couldn’t let this happen without a fight. I found Harold in his study, a glass of whiskey in his hand and a look of weary resignation on his face. The room smelled of smoke and old books, a comforting scent that now felt suffocating. "Father," I began, my voice trembling, "I heard your conversation with the merchant. How could you even consider selling me to the Alpha King?" He looked up, startled, but quickly regained his composure. "Isabella, you must understand, this is the only way to save our estate. The debts I owe are substantial, and King Kade has agreed to settle them in exchange for you." Tears welled in my eyes. "But I don’t love him! I don’t even know him! How can you expect me to marry a man like that?" His expression hardened. "Love has nothing to do with this, Isabella. This is about survival. Besides, once you give him an heir, you’ll be free." "Free?" I echoed bitterly. "Free from what? A life you’ve condemned me to? And what about the money you wasted? What did you spend it on that was so important?" His face twisted in anger. "Don’t you dare question me! Your mother’s illness drained this family of its wealth. She wasted everything, and now it’s up to you to set things right." The venom in his voice cut deep. My mother had been everything to me, and to hear him speak of her that way was unbearable. Tears streamed down my face as I turned and fled the room, his hateful words echoing in my mind. I found solace in my room, the one place that still held memories of my mother’s gentle presence. Her favorite books still lined the shelves, and the quilt she had made lay draped over my bed. I collapsed onto it, sobbing into the familiar fabric. How could my stepfather, the man I had trusted, betray me so completely? As the hours passed, my tears dried up, leaving a hollow ache in their place. I felt numb, as if my emotions had been wrung out and there was nothing left but a vast emptiness. I knew I had no choice but to comply with his demands. The thought of being sold to the Alpha King, a man known for his ruthlessness, filled me with dread. But what choice did I have? My stepfather’s words rang in my ears: “This is the only way to save our estate.” I spent the night tossing and turning, my mind plagued by visions of a future I didn’t want. I pictured myself standing before King Kade, his icy blue eyes assessing me with cold indifference. I imagined the life that awaited me—living in a grand but soulless palace, bearing a child for a man who saw me as nothing more than a tool. The thought made my stomach churn. Rumors about Alpha King Kade swirled in my mind. Whispers of his cold-blooded nature, his merciless rule, and the fear he instilled in both his enemies and his own people. They said he had once torn apart an entire village that defied him, leaving no survivors. His heart, they claimed, was as cold as the harsh winters that plagued our land. I had always dismissed these stories as exaggerated tales meant to scare children, but now they took on a terrifying new reality. The man I was to marry was a monster, and I was to be his prisoner. Morning came far too quickly. The first rays of sunlight filtered through my window, casting a golden hue over the room. I rose from my bed, feeling as though I had aged years overnight. My reflection in the mirror was a stark reminder of my reality—red-rimmed eyes, tear-streaked cheeks, and a look of despair that I couldn’t shake. Despite the heaviness in my heart, I knew I had to face the day. I dressed in a simple gown, my hands trembling as I fastened the buttons. Making my way downstairs, I heard the faint murmur of voices. My stepfather and the merchant were likely finalizing the details of my fate. I paused at the top of the stairs, taking a deep breath to steady myself. I couldn’t let them see how broken I felt. I had to be strong, if only for my own sake. Entering the room, I was met with the sight of my stepfather and the merchant standing by the fireplace. Their conversation halted as I approached, their eyes turning to me with varying degrees of expectation and maybe…pity. "Isabella," Harold said, his tone surprisingly gentle, "we were just discussing the arrangements. You will leave for the Alpha King’s palace tomorrow." Oh no, the words felt like a death sentence. It wasn't a bad dream after all. It was real, it was happening, my life was tumbling right before my eyes. I forced myself to remain composed, swallowing the lump in my throat. "I understand," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. The merchant stepped forward, a look of sympathy on his face. "Miss Isabella, I know this is difficult, but try to see it as an opportunity. The Alpha King is a powerful man, and you will be well cared for." I wanted to scream that being "well cared for" meant nothing if I was treated like a possession, but I held my tongue. Instead, I nodded, knowing that any protest would fall on deaf ears. After what happened last night, I didn't need to be told twice that my words didn't count on this matter. His mind was made up and he was going to do what he wanted, regardless of what I felt about it. The rest of the day passed in a blur. I moved through the motions of packing my belongings, each item a reminder of the life I was leaving behind. It wasn't even as if this place wasn't already torturous but still it was better than being sold off to a monster. My mother’s locket, a book of poetry she had loved, a small trinket box she had given me on my last birthday—all of these things felt like pieces of my heart being torn away. As evening fell, I found myself back in the garden, the place where my world had been turned upside down. The flowers, once a source of joy, now seemed to mock me with their vibrant colors and delicate petals. I sank onto a stone bench, the weight of my sorrow pressing down on me. Why did this happen? Why had my life been reduced to a mere transaction, a bargaining chip in my stepfather’s desperate game? The questions swirled in my mind, each one more painful than the last. A soft breeze rustled the leaves, carrying with it the faint scent of roses. I closed my eyes, letting the fragrance wash over me. In that moment, I felt a glimmer of my mother’s presence, a comforting reminder that she was still with me in spirit but it wasn't enough. If she was here, this would never have happened.
