The next day rolled around, and I helped the staff even though I was not sure I had a job still.
As I washed the dishes, my mind kept trailing off to yesterday with the wolf. He was so gentle, and his familiarity had me at ease.
“Farrah?!” Nigel’s voice rang.
Dropping the plate in the soapy dishwater, it splashed up onto my shirt. I spun around to face him with a soaking wet shirt. “Yes, Sir?”
Nigel eyed me. “What are you doing?”
I sighed. “Nigel, you know I have to work, this is my life,” I declared. “Please don’t make me leave,” I begged.
He huffed, but a smile appeared on his lips. “Fine, I need some help with the tea party tonight,” Nigel said, grabbing a uniform from the rack nearest to him. “Go put this on and you will officially be back on duty. I see no need to go further into the investigation. I know you would never say those things and I will tell the Queen myself.”
“Oh, thank you,” I screeched, wrapping my arms around Nigel and hugging him tightly. When I pulled away, his suit was now wet. “Oh, I’m so sorry, Sir,” I apologized, looking over his suit.
Nigel chuckled. “You should know me better, Farrah. I always have a backup suit. Now get to work.” He playfully shooed me on.
Grinning, I gave him a thankful nod and hurried away to change.
At the party
Guests talked amongst themselves while others took to the catered food from our famous chef from Brazil, and the Royal family sat around a large canopy with sparkling lights and torches lit to keep the bugs away.
A full moon illuminated the night sky, while foggy clouds strolled past it. Stars glistened all around us. Suddenly the chatter stopped as a glass clinked, grabbing everyone’s attention.
After pouring a guest some champagne, I swiveled around to see Prince Dax, using a spoon to smash against his beer bottle.
“Can I have everyone’s attention, please?” Dax’s voice echoed across the courtyard. “Will Danica please join me,” He said, waving her over.
I instantly felt dread at her name and when she took her place next to the Prince, I felt nauseous. I don’t know why but every time the Prince was near butterflies erupted inside me and to think soon she would be his wife made me sick.
“Thank you for joining us tonight. I have an announcement this evening,” Dax declared.
I felt the need to go back to the kitchen to grab some more trays because I really don’t feel like hearing him announce he loves this woman. She is awful and not classy at all; he is too good for her.
As I made way back towards the kitchen entrance. Dax called out. “Farrah?” he shouted.
I face the crowd awkwardly. “Um, me?” I asked, pointing at myself.
Dax grinned. “Yeah you, where are you going?”
All eyes glued to me for my answer. “Uh, to grab more drinks, your highness,” I answered.
“Could you come in front of the crowd, please? This is an announcement I would like all to hear,” he stated.
“Of course, your highness.” I answered, walking back towards the guests, I stopped at the front.
Anxiousness washed over me. What is going to happen now?
Dax spoke, turning towards Danica, and my heart sank. “Danica, I have been through many days and nights at war watching my men die in front of me while I can’t do anything about it but here I can make the right choices for my people. I need a Queen who will rule this land and trust that I can protect her and my people.” Danica smiled. “War changes a man. You leave home a boy who thinks he is invinciable but comes back, a broken man who feels lost as if this is not home anymore. There is only one woman who has shown me she believes in me and that I am not lost. I am capable of all things. That I can be King to my people and Danica you are not her,” Dax declared and Danica’s expression showed surprise.
“What?!” Danica stuttered.
“You won’t be my Queen,” Dax said, emotionless.
Danica’s gaze instantly fell on me. Her face full of rage, she rushed at me, slamming me to the ground. She quickly straddled me while I held up my hands to fend her off. But she was like an ox, so strong.
“Danica, get off her,” Dax growled.
As her fist came towards my face, Dax caught it in midair. “I said get off her.”
Danica didn’t budge, only stared at the Prince.
“NOW!,” Dax shouted, and she flinched, hurrying off me.
“This is not over, maid,” Danica snarled as the guards pulled her away.
Dax helped me to my feet. “Are you alright?” He asked, looking me over.
I brushed myself off. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
The Prince ran his finger across my lower lip, sending chills throughout my body at his touch. When he pulled away, his finger had blood. I quickly grabbed my lip. “Oh, I’m so sorry, your highness I should go clean myself up.”
As I tried to leave, Dax gripped my hand, pulling me back, then took me over to a table near us. “Let me help since I’m the one that got you into this in the first place,” he said, grabbing a napkin from the table and dabbing my lip lightly.
Planting my hand softly on his to stop him. “Why did she attack me in the first place? I know we have our differences but as soon as you said your announcement her hatred went to another level. She wanted to kill me.”
“There are some things we should talk about, but now is not the time.” Dax replied.
The Luna Queen appeared beside us along with her King. “Dax, what the hell was that?” his mother asked, irritated.
“Excuse me, your highness I will leave you to talk,” I declared, bowing.
“Thank you, Farrah,” the Luna Queen said gratefully.
A smirk played on the Prince’s lips. He seems to do that when he hears my name.
I smiled shyly at Dax. “Goodnight, Prince,” I mouthed and walked away.
After cleaning up the kitchen, I headed to my room for the night. When I entered, I plopped down on my bed. Stacie must be out with friends. It was her night off. So once again I’m here alone.
My thoughts about the Prince swirl around in my head. Who is this woman he plans to marry? Will she make him happy?
Even though Danica will not be Queen doesn’t mean she won’t retaliate and since she can turn into a wolf, I’m probably dead. And now we have to add more to my situation with the Prince. Why does it hurt thinking about him marrying someone?
Ugh Farrah he is a Prince get over it you would never be his type. I scold myself for thinking he could actually feel something for me.
The door flies open, scaring me half to death, and Stacie stumbles in. “HAHA, that is hilarious,” she giggled drunkenly. She sees me and rolls her eyes. “Don’t mind my loser roommate,” she whispers to the guy helping her into the room.
The guy smiles and guides her to the bed and she falls back onto her bed, then he runs out the door, leaving her there. Wow, such manners.
Soon Stacie is snoring louder than a lion, and I decide to take a walk.
Looking at the clock on my phone, it displayed two in the morning. I walk down a half lit hall towards the library, hoping I can find a book to read while my roommate sleeps. I need to get my mind off all that has happened in the past couple of days.
The Library is silent. Not a soul in sight, just like I like it. I grab a romance novel from the shelf and sit on the floor in front of it.
Half way through the book, I yawn and glance at my phone, realizing it is six in the morning.
“Oh no, I have to get ready for work.” I said aloud.
Getting up quickly, I hurried for the door, not watching my surroundings, and bumped into someone.
