Chapter 6

Fear engulfed me. This job is all I have left. I can’t lose it too. I anxiously fiddled with my now sweaty hands. “Farrah?” Nigel spoke. I looked up at Nigel. “Yeah?” I mumbled. “Look I know you are the best staff I’ve had in many years but with Danica on my back about it I need to suspend you until we investigate what happened.” Nigel declared. The chair screeched as I stood from it. “Yes, sir, I understand,” I whispered and headed for the door, but my hand didn’t even make it to the knob before Nigel called out to me. “Farrah, Don’t worry I will fix this and you will work again soon,” He promised. I nodded with a thankful grin and walked out, heading to my room. Having nowhere to be at the moment since I’m jobless, for now, I went to the main palace entrance. It has changed so much since the first day I stepped foot in here. The walls are no longer a hundred centuries old, now painted white with high ceilings and gold window trim. The large deer head that displayed on the wall before was in the Alpha King’s den and they replaced it with large floral portraits, but one thing remained. I stepped over to the same photo I saw of the young Prince that day. I traced my fingers across the photo. His smile was so bright and radiated happiness. I felt like Dax was no longer this same person. Unsure of what the Prince has been through in the war, a part of me wishes I could help, but how? I rip my hand away from the picture as I’m startled by someone clearing their throat when I spun around Dax stood there eyeing me curiously. “Miss, what brings you up here?” Dax asked, looking around me at the photo I was touching before he disturbed me. “Ah, I see.” I bowed my head. “I am so sorry your…” Dax stepped toward me, placing his finger over my lips to quiet me. “It’s Dax, Remember?” His touch caused an outcry from my soul. I closed my eyes, taking in his scent of musky woods and fresh linens when I opened them. He stared at me with lust-filled eyes and instantly terror crept upon me. “I should go,” I said, hurrying away. My body wanted me to turn around and go back, but my mind went straight to last night and I could instantly feel that man’s hands on me again. The bile surfaced and I couldn’t hold back anymore. I found the nearest bathroom, pushing the door open. Doubled over the toilet and threw everything I had left up. After tossing up all my cookies. I washed my hands and face, then patted dry and gave myself one last glance in the mirror, then heading back out. As I came out, Danica ran right into me, almost knocking me down. “Watch it!” She hissed, annoyed. I took a deep breath. “Sorry, your highness,” I apologize, even though it wasn’t my fault. “You are so pathetic. You know my fiance only paid that money because he felt sorry for you. No one wants you,” she laughed. I forced myself to keep my tears at bay. “You have nothing to worry about with the Prince. I am not sure why you feel threatened by me, anyway. He is marrying you, Danica. So maybe you should act as his wife instead of not trusting him because he would never cheat on the person he loves and I really don’t even know him and I can tell he is not the type. You of all people should already know that.” I declared, then proceeded to leave. As I walked past Danica, a growl echoed in the hall, and I turned around to see Danica’s face changing. Her teeth turned into large K9’s and her eyes turned to gold while I heard cracking bones. Before I knew it, there was no longer a human in front of me, but now a full-grown wolf larger than any I’ve ever seen before stood only inches from me. My body froze, not able to move. I just watched a human turn into a freaking wolf. What the f**k? Am I dreaming? This has to be a dream. I had to rub my eyes to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. But there was definitely a wolf standing on all fours, right in front of me. I swallowed hard. “Wh-what are you?” I stuttered. Danica let out a loud roar, causing my hair to fly back and splattering drool all over my face. I jumped back, but my body slammed into something large and hard. I reached my hand behind me to feel without even turning to see. My hand gripped fur and my eyes grew wide in fear. Holy s**t, there are two of them. As I slowly turned to face my fear, a massive chocolate-colored wolf stood towering over me and Danica. She bowed quickly in respect as the other wolf forced out a deep growl, shaking the pictures from the wall, causing them to hit the floor, shattering the glass. Even though I felt terrified, the Chocolate wolf helped me feel at ease, like he was protecting me. That he wouldn’t let anything harm me. His presence felt familiar and powerful. The way Danica submitted to him. He was her master. Danica brought me out of my thoughts to her whining as she crouched low like a high-pitched noise was echoing in her head. Her wolf slumped to the floor, whimpering. The other wolf stepped forward, planting his front paws on either side of Danica’s head. After a few seconds of them standing there, Danica got to her feet and hurried away. Then the chocolate wolf turned to face me. Realizing I’m in the presence of a wild wolf, my fear resurfaced and my hands sweat anxiously. I swallowed hard before I spoke. “Please don’t hurt me.” My voice was raspy. The wolf c****d his head to the side, confused, then stepped towards me and I flinched, closing my eyes, only opening one when I felt soft fur against my skin. The wolf nudged me with its snout, and when our eyes met, his pupils dilated to black. Reaching my hand out to caress the wolf’s soft fur, he leans into my touch. “You won’t hurt me,” I said, gently rubbing behind the gigantic wolf’s ear while he nestled into me. “You saved me twice,” I whispered. “Thank you.” The sounds of servers and maids startle us down the hall. As we look back at each other, he gives me one last nudge with his snout, then licks my hand and rushes away, disappearing.
