Chapter Title: Chapter 1: The Birthday Betrayal. The city shimmered beneath the evening lights, its towering skyscrapers glowing against the darkening sky. Cars streamed through the streets in endless lines, their headlights cutting through the drizzle that had begun to fall. Ariana Cole stood outside Le Château, one of the most luxurious restaurants in the city. She glanced down at the small velvet gift box in her trembling hands and smiled. Inside was a silver wristwatch she'd spent six months saving for. She wasn't rich. She wasn't even close. Every extra shift at the café, every freelance design she accepted, every meal she skipped... All of it had been for this gift. Today was Ethan Knight's twenty-seventh birthday. Three years together. Three years of believing she'd found the man she would spend forever with. Her phone buzzed. Sophia. Sophia: Have you reached the restaurant? Ariana smiled. Ariana: Yes. I'm about to surprise him. Sophia: Take pictures! I still think he's going to propose tonight. Ariana laughed softly. "So do I," she whispered. She tucked her phone into her purse and walked inside. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead. The scent of expensive perfume mixed with freshly baked bread filled the air. A waiter approached with a polite smile. "Good evening, miss." "I'm looking for Ethan Knight." The waiter checked his tablet. "Private Room Seven." "Thank you." Her heartbeat quickened. Maybe tonight really was the beginning of forever. She climbed the marble staircase slowly, smoothing the wrinkles from her simple blue dress. She knew she didn't look like the wealthy women Ethan usually met through business. But Ethan had always told her... "You're different." "Money isn't everything." "You're the only woman I've ever loved." She believed every word. When she reached Room Seven, she raised her hand to knock. Then she heard laughter. A woman's laughter. She frowned. Maybe his colleagues had arrived early. She smiled again. The surprise would be even better. Just as she touched the doorknob, a familiar voice drifted through the door. "...Does Ariana still believe you're serious about marrying her?" Ariana froze. That voice... Her cousin. Isabella. Ethan chuckled. "Of course she does." The room burst into laughter. Ariana's fingers tightened around the gift box. "I almost feel sorry for her," Isabella said between laughs. "You?" Ethan scoffed. "You've been pretending to be her loving cousin while sneaking around with me for months." "Well..." Isabella replied lazily. "She makes it too easy." Silence. Ariana couldn't breathe. No... No... This couldn't be happening. Ethan continued. "I never planned to marry Ariana." "I only dated her because she made me look good." "The innocent charity girl." "My parents loved that image." "But she's boring." "I got tired of pretending." Isabella laughed. "I told you she'd never find out." "She's too trusting." Someone clinked a wine glass. Another person laughed. Ariana felt as though the floor beneath her feet had disappeared. Every memory... Every promise... Every dream... It had all been a lie. Without thinking, she pushed the door open. The room fell silent. Every head turned toward her. Ethan's confident smile disappeared instantly. "Ariana..." His face drained of color. Isabella slowly removed her hand from Ethan's shoulder, but she wasn't fast enough. Ariana had already seen everything. The intimate smiles. The expensive wine. The romantic birthday cake decorated with the words— To My Love. Not friend. Not colleague. My Love. Ariana's chest tightened. Three years. Three years... Gone in one moment. No one spoke. The silence was unbearable. Finally Ethan forced a smile. "Babe..." "It's not what it looks like." Ariana laughed. It wasn't a happy laugh. It was the kind of laugh that escaped when someone's heart shattered beyond repair. "So..." she whispered. "My cousin." "My boyfriend." "My future husband." She nodded slowly. "Interesting combination." "Ariana, listen—" "No." She raised a trembling hand. "You've already spoken enough." She looked directly at Isabella. "I trusted you." Isabella crossed her arms. "You were too naive." "You should've realized Ethan deserved someone who understood his lifestyle." Someone at the table awkwardly looked away. Someone else pretended to check their phone. Nobody defended Ariana. Not one person. She suddenly realized... Every single person in that room already knew. She was the only fool. Tears blurred her vision. She placed the velvet gift box gently on the table. "I bought you a birthday present." Her voice barely shook now. Because the pain had gone beyond tears. Ethan reached for her. "Ariana, don't leave." She stepped backward. "I don't know who hurts more." "You." She looked at Isabella. "Or you." Then she smiled. A sad... Broken... Beautiful smile. "I hope one day someone loves you exactly the way you loved me." Without another word... She walked away. Behind her— "Ariana!" "Ethan, go after her!" "Stop her!" She didn't stop. She ran. The rain hit her face the moment she stepped outside. Within seconds, she was soaked. She didn't care. She ran through crowded streets, ignoring the curious stares. Her phone rang. Ethan. She rejected the call. Again. Again. Again. Finally... She switched it off. She slowed only when she reached the bridge overlooking the river. The city lights reflected across the water like broken stars. Ariana leaned against the railing. Then she cried. Not quietly. Not elegantly. She cried until her knees gave way. She cried for the dreams she'd built. For the wedding she'd imagined. For the family she'd hoped to have. For three years she'd never get back. Minutes passed. Or maybe hours. She didn't know. A sleek black Rolls-Royce pulled quietly to the curb. The rear door opened. A tall man stepped out. His tailored black coat barely moved despite the wind. He wasn't carrying an umbrella. Yet somehow the rain seemed unable to touch him. His sharp jaw. Cold gray eyes. Powerful posture. Everything about him screamed authority. He looked at Ariana silently. She ignored him. Rich people weren't known for caring about strangers crying in the rain. He walked closer. "You'll get sick." His voice was calm. Deep. Controlled. She wiped her tears angrily. "I'm fine." "No." "You aren't." She laughed bitterly. "Since when do billionaires care?" He studied her face. "I don't." She frowned. "What?" "I care about you." She stared. "Do I know you?" "No." "Then why are you talking to me?" Instead of answering... He handed her a handkerchief. She didn't take it. "I don't accept pity." "It isn't pity." "What is it?" "An opportunity." She frowned again. "What are you talking about?" He reached into his coat and removed a thin brown envelope. Inside was a contract. He handed it to her. "Read it." She hesitated. Then took it. The title made her eyes widen. MARRIAGE AGREEMENT "What kind of joke is this?" "It isn't a joke." She looked back at him. "You've mistaken me for someone else." "I never make that mistake." "You don't even know me." "I know enough." "You are Ariana Cole." "Twenty-four years old." "Fashion designer." "Works evenings at Bloom Café." "Your mother needs an expensive heart operation." "You've exhausted your savings." "You were just betrayed by your boyfriend." Her heart stopped. "How..." "Who are you?" He extended his hand. "My name is Damien Knight." The name sounded familiar. Very familiar. Before Ariana could remember where she'd heard it... Damien said quietly— "I need a wife." "And I believe..." He looked directly into her tear-filled eyes. "...you need a husband." Ariana stared at him in complete disbelief. Was this man insane... Or was fate about to change her life forever?
