Chapter 34

1212 Words
I think we might have a traitor in our midst, love. Alpha Desmond said to Odessa. She couldn't believe her ears. A traitor. But ,Are you sure you know what you're talking about? She reasoned with her husband. I know exactly what I'm talking about. Look at this scenario. The rogues have been attacking our borders for weeks now, but the moment we try to set a trap for them, they are nowhere to be found. Odessa's face scrunched up in thought, and she realized that maybe— just maybe— Desmond was going somewhere with this. Ever since she had been reborn, she found it hard to trust people, so she couldn't blame him if he didn't. Who do you suspect? I have an inkling, love. But I'm not too sure yet. My Beta Delta and a few of my warriors are the only ones who know about the plan. He explained to her. So you're saying it has to be one of them. He rubbed his hands down his face in exhaustion, shaking his head. No. Not necessarily. I trust my men. They know not to cross me. I suspect maybe someone overheard our plan, someone still close to us. Odessa sighed in response to his answer. So what are we going to do? Well, unless I have concrete evidence, I can't just attack anyone. I will bide my time and plan another strategy. His eyes flashed, his wolf sensing his anger and projecting it. Odessa placed her hands on his in comfort, and his body relaxed under her touch. He gave her a breathtaking smile. Let's go out. He announced all of a sudden, pushing out of his seat and heading towards her. Odessa had a puzzled expression on her face. Like right now? Yes, love. Come on. He held her hand, leading her out of his office and out of the pack house. A lot of maids and workers watched them in curiosity. As the large Alpha held his petite mate by his side. Where are we going exactly? Odessa asked. She had to increase her speed to keep up with the Alpha. Her dark brown hair bouncing as she walked. He was so fast. We are going to get ice cream. Madam Sydney has the best ice cream in this whole pack. Whenever I'm feeling down, I send George to get me a tub. He smiled sheepishly. You eat ice cream? She deadpanned. Her eyes widened to the size of saucers. The large Alpha rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment, his cheeks tinting a pink color. Um, who doesn't? Odessa was once again stunned by her husband's hidden, goofy side. They acted all macho, but were big softies on the inside, and he wanted them to get ice cream even though he had loads of work on his desk to finish. She felt her chest go warm. Butterflies erupted in her belly at the feeling, making Aria, her wolf, howl in happiness. And she was sure he had never made her feel this way unless it was an effect of the mate bond. She couldn't feel the mate bond with Desmond, but her feelings for him kept on growing as the days passed. It was concerning to say the least. She couldn't tell if she wanted to kiss him or run for the hills. Fear of betrayal still made her cautious around men. But he was her mate, her true mate, given to her by the goddess. As a second chance, could she let go? And give in to these feelings and accept him fully? She decided to ignore these thoughts in the meantime and live in the moment. As they had arrived at the quaint ice cream parlor. The outside was white and pink with floor-to-ceiling windows. Desmond pushed open the door for her to go in. The inside was painted a warm pink and blue color, with only four booths that had blue-colored cushioned seats. Desmond, my dear. So nice of you to visit today. It's been so long since I last saw you. Odessa looked at the woman who had called the Alpha by his name, a little shocked. Werewolves took hierarchy seriously. No one could call Desmond by his name unless they were family, or if he allowed it. Was she his family? She wondered to herself. The woman rounded the ice cream counter to pull Desmond into a warm, motherly hug. She had black flowing curls with spotted white hairs at the roots. Her eyes were a warm hazel color. Her nose straight and pointed. Leading to thin, uneven lips, which were stretched out in a permanent smile. She was surely an elderly wolf, but Odessa couldn't deny that she was beautiful. Even age looked to be catching up to her. Luna Odessa, welcome. Welcome. My name is Sydney, and it's so nice to finally meet you personally. Sydney's smooth voice greeted Odessa as she let go of a grinning Desmond and approached her. Her warm hands took Odessa's as she spoke with a smile on her face, making Odessa smile in return. It was infectious. Nice to meet you too, Sydney. Odessa replied politely. Desmond stood off to the side, listening to their conversation as he scanned the options of ice cream. So are you guys here on a date? Sydney enquired, making Odessa choke on her spit. Date? No, it's no— Yes, we are. Desmond said to Sydney, making Odessa's eyes widen. Sydney gave her a knowing look and let go of her hands, walking back behind the counter. Can we have a tub of mint chocolate chip and some sprinkles? Sydney got to work fixing them a tub as Odessa watched the old woman work. Fascinated. They took their ice cream, sat in one of the booths close to the door, and dug in. Odessa was about to scold Desmond for not warning her about how close he was to Sydney. And what was that thing he pulled about a date? He never even asked her out. She pouted when she looked up at him. He was watching her while taking a scoop of the creamy dessert. His pink tongue flicked out, and she never took her eyes off it. As it licked and sucked salaciously at the ice cream on the spoon. She felt her body go rigid at the sight. Tingles spread over her arms and body, and an unfamiliar feeling twisted low in her belly, making her tighten her grip on her spoon with a gasp. Are you okay, love? You look like a ripe tomato. Desmond teased her. She was immediately back to her senses, stabbing the ice cream forcefully with a glare on her face. He had intentionally teased a reaction out of her. Shut up. She muttered slowly, but the Alpha's ears were sharp enough to hear it, making him double over in laughter at his wife. She couldn't help but smile a little, seeing this side of her mate that others couldn't. It was new and refreshing, a far cry from his normal brooding personality. She feared for her poor heart because if he kept on surprising her like this, she wouldn't be able to stop herself from falling.
