The burden of a Luna Ravenna's POV
The word Luna used to mean something; power, influence, respect, and strength. But in my pack, it had become a curse attached to my name. “Move aside, Luna,” one of the warriors muttered as I passed through the training grounds. His tone dripped with mockery. He didn’t bow. None of them did anymore. I stopped, forcing a calm smile that felt tight against my face. “You forgot your manners, Ryker.” He met my eyes, defiant. “Maybe you forgot you are a woman who is supposed to give her husband an heir.” The others laughed. I turned away before the sound could dig deeper than it already had. I would have commanded them to kneel, to remember who I was—but what good was a title when no one feared it? I was Luna in name only. The barren Luna the Black Fang Pack had ever known. I couldn’t bear the mockery. I ran to my room, jammed the door shut, and fell to my knees. It has been five years. Five years of waiting, praying, and hoping. Five years of smiling at every mother in the pack, pretending I didn’t ache when I saw them holding what I could not have. The Moon Goddess has not blessed me with a child, but she blessed me with a loving husband who endured and kept loving me. For a day, Draven hasn’t even reminded me of my pain; he is always there to assure me that everything will soon go well, and that was what kept me going for this long. What would have been of me if not for my husband? “Ravenna!!!” I jolted up. It was Draven’s voice—angry, sharp, unfamiliar. Before I could speak, the door burst open. “Where is that woman that calls herself a Luna?” he roared. My breath caught. “Alpha? What happened? Is everything alright—?” He swiped my hands off his shoulders as if my touch disgusted him. “I can’t keep pretending everything is alright when I’m burning inside. Every day my pack—the people I rule—mock me. I can’t even address my pack anymore. I have lost my respect. And who is behind all that? It’s you, Ravenna.” “I am confused, my husband. What happened? I still can’t understand anything. You are speaking in parables. Please go straight to the point and save me all this stress. What did I do wrong?” “You did everything wrong, Ravenna. I wish barren was written on the face of a woman—I wouldn’t have married you.” I took three staggering steps backward. I couldn’t believe it. It all seemed like I was imagining things. “Forget the pack!” I screamed before I could stop myself. “What about me, Draven? What about the woman who lies awake every night wondering what’s wrong with her body? What about the woman who watches others cradle their babies while she’s dying inside? What about the woman who stands before the mirror every morning, pressing her hand to her belly, praying to feel something move?” My voice cracked. “What about her, Draven? What about me?” For a moment, he just stared at me—truly stared—as if seeing me for the first time. But then his jaw tensed again. “You don’t understand what it means to be Alpha. To carry a legacy.” For years I kept silent, but it was too much. I couldn’t bear the mockery. “I understand more than you think,” I whispered. “Because I’m the one being blamed for it.” He turned away, gripping the edge of the table until his knuckles whitened. “We could have had everything. A family, a future. And now look at us.” “Only heaven knows how you lived your life that made the Moon Goddess curse you.” Tears blurred my vision, but I refused to cry in front of him. “Draven… do you even remember the last time I was happy?” His silence answered for him. The fire crackled, throwing shadows across his face. I looked at him—the man I once thought was my only hope of smiling. “I’ve prayed. Every night I pray to the Moon Goddess until my knees bleed. I offer her flowers, water, my tears… and still, nothing. I don’t know what I did to deserve this, Draven. I don’t know what sin I’m paying for. But I swear, if she would just give me one child—just one—I’d give her my life in return.” “Enough of all this pretence and emotional blackmail, Ravenna. You don’t know how it is for a man, especially an Alpha, to rule without an heir. If you are hiding anything from me, you better speak up so we can find a solution. Or you get ready to leave my house, barren woman.” The words echoed through the room… and through my bones. He didn’t wait for a reply. He didn’t give me a chance to digest the cruel words he uttered to me. He turned and left. The door slammed so hard the walls trembled, and with it, something inside me cracked—quietly, deeply, beyond repair. The silence that followed was suffocating. My knees buckled, sending me crashing to the floor. My palms slapped the cold marble tiles, and I bowed forward until my forehead touched the ground. I felt so terrible. My pack had looked down on me, and the only person I thought was still with me had shattered me. One sentence kept replaying multiple times in my head: Only heaven knows how you lived your life that made the Moon Goddess curse you. One thing was clear to me—love is never enough. The same man I loved and believed in looked me straight in the eyes and said cruel things to me. Just then, I noticed a shadow shift behind the curtain near my exit window. My heart lurched. Someone was outside my room. I lifted my head slowly, voice trembling. “Who… is there?” But I got no reply. Why would someone stand there? Why would they eavesdrop on such a private, painful conversation? I stood, moving toward the curtain. Every step felt heavier, every breath tighter. The fabric brushed my fingers. With trembling hands, I pulled it aside— —and the face staring back at me was the one I least expected.
