The visit to the hospital was a success, and I was able to learn just how extraordinary Director Paula was—both as a physician and as an administrator, but also as a person. Every member of the clinic staff spoke highly of her, and they were puzzled by her sudden absence, asking me about it. I had no choice but to answer with a white lie.
“The doctor had to travel urgently to visit a relative in the territory of another pack, but I’m sure she’ll be back very soon.”
It pained me to lie—especially to people who trusted me and held me in such high regard—but that was part of the price of leadership. The truth would have left them all stunned and might even have endangered Doctor Paula’s life. I could only hope that the men Aelix had sent would rescue her as soon as possible.
