Every member of the clinic staff spoke highly of her, and they were puzzled by her sudden absence, asking me about it. I had no choice but to answer with a white lie. “The doctor had to travel urgently to visit a relative in the territory of another pack, but I’m sure she’ll be back very soon.” It pained me to lie—especially to people who trusted me and held me in such high regard—but that was part of the price of leadership.
