Becca suddenly heard the door slam. She had arrived at Jude's house before him.
She had drifted into entertaining herself by watching TV, and was forgetting about how angry she was, when, suddenly, the door slammed and Jude entered the house.
Becca quickly became alert and defensive because she knew what sort of argument they would engage in soon.
Jude kept a cool demeanor and entered the bedroom. His eyes were dark, as he couldn't help it, but he intentionally controlled his emotions because he knew that a lot was at stake. If he lost his cool, Becca would lose her cool too, and he would lose his company.
