In The Beggining
When Laelynn was born, the world seemed to shift around her. Her childhood was fairly normal. She would rough house with her friends like any pup would at a young age, until it came time for her to go to school. Suddenly, one of the boys she had used to play with began to avoid her. When she confronted him to ask why, he only laughed at her, "You really think I would want to be your friend?" Devland sneered.
"Well we've always been friends...." She said, now unsure.
"Ha! That's what you think?" He questioned smugly. "I only treated you as such because my mother said I should get to know you." He rolled his eyes at the thought. "But from what I've seen, there's really nothing special about you at all" He smiled, proud of his conclusion of her. All Laelynn could do was stand there and listen to him say terrible things. She had never thought of herself this way, but perhaps he was right. Maybe she wasn't worth getting to know and maybe there really wasn't anything special about her.
"Hey, leave her alone!" A voice yelled out, pulling her from her thoughts. Down the hall Laelynn's friend, Callan was briskly walking towards the situation. As he approached he said, "Don't talk about my friend like that. She is more amazing then you could ever hope to be in your life." He stated matter-of-factly. He stood in front of Laelynn, lending a reassuring smile her way.
"Haha, okay." said Devland as he walked away, his pride hurt.
"Don't listen to him." Said Callan as he walked her to class. "He's just mad because he wasn't allowed to play video games all summer." Laelynn laughed at his comment. Yeah, he would come around eventually, she thought. Though, his words stayed in her mind.
After that day, Devland made it a point to pick on her in class, on the playground, and even on the bus ride home. He would call her names and throw used papers and tissues at her. When she tried to speak up in class about it her teacher, and even her parents only responded with 'He's just being a boy' or 'He probably just has a crush on you' but Laelynn could feel that he resented her. She didn't understand why one day, he just decided he was going to ruin her life in any way he could think of.
Soon, all of the other kids in class decided that picking on her seemed way too fun to not join in. So not only was Devland making her life hard, but her entire grade made it nearly impossible to stay positive about anything. She began to feel sad. She felt sad about losing a good friend, or what she thought was her friend. She felt sad that now she couldn't even make new friends because he had ruined that for her too. She wished that everything could be back to the way it used to be, before they had started school, when she had friends, and when Devland wasn't such a jerk.
When everyone had turned on her, there was only one person in her grade that didn't change, Callan. She cherished him. He was always there for her and he always stood up to anyone who tried to bully her. He was her rock, her warrior, her hero, and most importantly, her best friend. He was the one positive thing she had left. He was her light in the darkest of tunnels. In his eyes, she could do no wrong, and she was all that mattered to him.
Callan and his family had always been on the poorer side of the pack. He never had a lot as a pup so he learned to be grateful for what he did have. He had his family and his friends and a few toys that he loved. His favorite thing to do was play outside with his friends. One of them stood out to him though, above all the rest. Laelynn was his closest friend. He could see that she was special, even as small children. He knew that she would be something spectacular someday, despite being born to delta and omega parents. So when they began school, he couldn't understand why Devland suddenly wanted nothing to do with her. They had always talked about how great she was, how kind and sweet she was to everyone she met, and how they couldn't wait to see what she'd become. So it made him very mad that he told her that she wasn't anything worthwhile, because he knew that Devland could see it too. He disliked Devland now. He has become Callan's least favorite person, and for good reason.
As the years went on, Callan became very protective of Laelynn. He would go everywhere with her. He walked her home from school every day after they decided that the bus was overrated anyway, and they even had sleepovers sometimes. As long as it wasn't on a school night. Even as they got older, Callan made sure that she was okay. If he felt like something was bothering her, he would sit with her until she was ready to talk through it. She appreciated his company and felt completely comfortable telling him everything. They were best friends after all.
One day when they were both sixteen, they had run into Devland in the hall at school. "Hey, watch it mutts!" He yelled. He had become short tempered and cold, just like his long forgotten father, the ex-Alpha, who was cast out when Devland was only five. "This jacket is new and I don't need it smelling like rats and garbage juice." He walked away, him and his friends laughing at what they had clearly thought was a good burn.
"That's okay. We wouldn't want to ruin the scent of wet dog it has already accumulated from you." Callan said smugly. Devland looked back at them as they walked away laughing as he did before. Laelynn looked back for a second to see a glimpse of sadness in Devland's eyes, only for them to flash red in pure rage as he turned and stomped away. His 'goons' followed not far behind.
