In the 1960s you were NEVER considered a “heavy” smoker unless you went over two packs a day, and a fair number of folks would still have classed that as “moderate” or “moderately heavy” while reserving pure heavy for 3 packs a day or more. How much of this change is natural and how much is engineered by antismoking campaigns using every nook and cranny of language and thought to reduce smoking and the number of smokers to a point where they can simply be eliminated without a fuss is uncertain, but the media has a LOT power, and hundreds of millions of dollars a year with a fair amount of that pumped into ads and press releases and pressures on the media to portray things from an antismoking point of view have certainly had an impact. When a TV network exec gets 500 handwritten letters pleading with them to stop “murdering children” by allowing TV shows to have characters that smoke… well, it has an effect. The execs SHOULD know better, but most of them are likely all too unaware of the sort of nationwide campaigns in our schools work to not only brainwash children, but also to more or less forcibly recruit them into pseudo-military campaigns for various specific goals.
