Haleys Pov
"I'm so tired, I will probably be asleep before we get home." I said to Nia, who still looked like she could go on and on.
"Hunter invited us to go to the island with him for the weekend," Nia said with a pleading look.
Confused. I look at her, I know her family does not care for me.
"Why would he invite me? He made it pretty clear he is another one of your family members who does not like me." I gave a sarcastic laugh.
"Well, it does not matter if they like you or not because I do and they can all kiss our asses. Plus, we need this. We can relax all weekend."
"I have to say that does sound nice."
I have only been to the island once with Nia. I didn't want to leave, we had the best weekend there just the two of us, because Hunter. Well, of course, he was away and her parents were no longer living. It is her family's land and where she grew up. She grew up in the main house, which is a breath taking log cabin-style home, and then there were others who worked for the family who lived in smaller homes around the island, so it was more like a small town. In other words, she grew up very wealthy, to say the least.
We get home to our small apartment and I look at it and wonder why Nia chooses to live here with me rather than her big nice childhood home. I opened my mouth to ask her but she had already gone to her room.
I shake it off and get ready for bed by putting on only a t-shirt. More than ready for sleep to come, I ease onto the bed and get underneath the cover. Then, as always, my mind wont let me. I started thinking about Hunter. As he said, I was costing them money. I felt bad because I knew I had made a mistake and he was right. I make a deal with myself to practice the recipes better and watch what I pour closer.
At some point, sleep finally takes over. I dream of my parents. Their smiling faces and loving hugs. It makes me feel happy to be held again by someone who loves me unconditionally. The dream fades as I wake to the sun brightly shinning. It feels nice and warm flowing through the window as if it's kissing my cheek. I stretch my arms high above my head and move to a sitting position. I hear Nia in the kitchen. I am sure she already has coffee made.
I open the door, not bothering to put pants on because its just Nia, right? Wrong. As soon as I turn the corner to head into the kitchen, I slam right into a wall named Hunter. "s**t, sorry" I say as he reaches to stop me from falling backwards after crashing into him.
That's when I remembered and he noticed I was in only a t-shirt.
" Oh god, Sorry I didn't know we had company." I say with embarrassment written all over my face, I ran back to my bedroom to put my pants on. I slowly head back to the kitchen where I see an amused Nia and a very un-amused Hunter. I go straight to the coffee pot without a word and pour myself a cup.
I take the first sip and slowly let the embarrassment of showing my ass to Hunter fade. I turned to face them and I saw my envelope of tips on the table in front of Hunter.
"I left that on purpose, I didn't mean to cost the bar or your family any money and I promise I will try harder to get it right." I said to him.
"Have it your way." Hunter says and picks the envelope up and puts it in his jacket pocket. I don't know why but I felt an instant disappointment that he didn't insist I take the tips I had worked for, but I understand why he didn't.
I take my coffee into the living room where I can still see and hear them at the table. They discuss the weekend and a few projects that Hunter wants to complete while we are there. All I can think about is one of those big comfortable beds again. I haven't ever slept that well in my life. Then I heard it. "She needs a new dress.", WHoa, what the hell is that about? I'm sleeping all weekend.
"Excuse me, but did I hear you say I need a dress?" I said, still sitting on the couch.
Hunter and Nia both looked at me. Nia says "Yes."
"What for might I ask?"
"Its kind of a tradition to have a party when one of us comes home after a long time of being away." Nia explains.
"OK, why cant I just wear one of my dresses?"
"Because I've seen your dresses," Nia says.
"I guess you will be needing this now." He took the envelope back out of his pocket and tossed it across the room to me.
I rolled my eyes at him and laid the envelope on the coffee table.
"I can just stay here this weekend, there is no need to waste money on a new dress for a party. I have not been invited to."
"I invited you, Your Nia's friend," Hunter said, sounding confused.
"I'm sorry I know you invited us to go for the weekend, its just Nia here didn't tell me anything beyond that. Nothing about a party or projects, I thought I was going to relax all weekend in that big beautiful house with the big-ass comfortable beds." I threw my hands up and surrendered.
"Fine, I'll go buy a damn dress."
"Great that's settled. Be at the dock by 2 and please do not be late." He says as he stands and heads to the door. He reaches for the handle but stops and turns to me once more.
"Buy a red one." He says and leaves, closing the door.
I am too shocked for words.
