Hunters pov I look at each of them as they realize that this human is my mate. They all seemed a bit worried. I sit and take in a deep breath. "Nia, how long have you known Haley and what exactly does she know about our kind?" "I met her right after you left. She was in most of my classes at school. We became fast friends, but she knows nothing about us." "So she thinks you are just another human girl? "Yes, Hunter, I know better than to blab about who we are to people." "They are f*****g humans not people." I said, irritation now setting in because my wolf wanted to get to know his mate. Me, on the other hand, would just as soon kill her now, so I don't have to f*****g deal with this s**t. "It's time to open." Nia says, giving me a smart ass little grin. "Fine. I'll be out in a bit. I want to look at the books, and where the f**k is Amy." Tom answered me, "she works the weekend shift because Haley needs a few days off." "Of coarse she does." "So are you just going to ignore the fact that your mate is standing right outside that door, getting ready to serve a bunch of un-mated wolves or unmarried vampires?" "I haven't decided if she will even survive the night, Nia. Why would I care? I mean, if one of them kills her, then I won't have to worry about a mate now, will I?" " You know what, Hunter, you are an ass. She is a nice person," Nia said as she left. After a few hours, I finished going over the books and headed out to the bar where I decided to sit at the end and observe this human. I watch as she serves the wolves beer after beer or shot after shot. She smiles at each one as she serves them just as she should, but I see exhaustion in her eyes. Nobody but Nia really talks to her other than the customers. I sit quietly and watch as she makes her way to me. "What can I get you?" She asks as if I am just another customer. "Bourbon." I tell her and she quickly gets a glass and pours three fingers. She places the glass and a napkin in front of me, smiling as she moves back to the other customers. Nia notices me at the bar, raising her eyebrows. "So, are you going to give this a shot?" I heard her through the mind link. "Nia, mind your own business." She smiles and takes a tray of food and drinks to a table. I cant understand how she has survived working here. Nia, I'm sure, has protected her from the wolves and the vamps. But no way could she defend herself against one of us. Wolves tend to get rowdy when they drink. I watch as Tom and Nate work the room helping out anywhere they can, as Nia and Haley work the bar. It seems like she fits in well, but why wouldn't she? She feels safe. She has no idea that she is standing in a bar full of wolves and vampires that could kill her in an instant and most of them probably want to. I feel a hand on my shoulder, I know who it is before looking. Zach sits and looks at me, nodding his head toward Haley. "So this is the human?" "Yeah," I said and took a sip of my drink. "Well." He takes a breath. "What needs to be done?" I raised my hand, getting her attention before answering his question. He will need a drink for what I am about to tell him. She smiles as she takes his order. She hands him a beer and a napkin and smiles again as she turns to me, asking if I would like another drink. I nod and she gets a clean glass and again pours three fingers of bourbon. Placing the glass and a napkin in front of me. She turns and leaves us, but I continue to watch her as a vamp gets her attention. "Nothing, She is my mate." Zach's eyes go wide and he is now watching the scene unfold. The band starts to play and I cant hear what the vamp says, but her smile drops and she turns away quickly. He quickly grabs her arm and pulls her up to the side of the bar where he sits. She just as quickly jerks her arm from his grip, backing away but not taking her eyes off of him. Zach starts to intervene but I stop him. I am interested in seeing how she handles this. She simply ignores him. That's how she handled it. I shake my head. The vamp smiles and licks his lips at her before laughing at her and moving on. I notice he moves to a table with a couple of other young vamps who all laugh and look at the human behind the bar like she is their next dinner. She doesn't seem to be bothered by them at all. She still just looks tired. The kind of tired that would make a permanent sleep sound good. I almost feel pity for her, her eyes look like they have never seen anything but exhaustion. "What are you going to do, Hunter?" "I don't know yet." " Well, there is the fact that she is still breathing." He smiles and takes a drink of his beer. "I'm sure the gods are getting a real kick out of this one." I said as I continued to watch Haley work and converse with the customers.
