Haley

760 Words
"Get up Haley, we're going to be late for work." I heard Nia yell from the bathroom of our small two-bedroom apartment. We were lucky to have found this gem. It sits on Lake Michigan and we have a perfect view of the lake from our apartment. I sit up and gaze out my window looking at the beautiful sight I get to see every day. "HALEY." Nia yelled again. "I'm up." I said as I dragged myself out of bed to get ready for work. By day, we work as assistants in a law firm and when I say assistants, I mean, lowest on the totem pole, get coffee kind of assistants. We were fresh out of college and lucky to have found work at all in this small town we live in. By night we both tend bar at Nia's family's bar. That's why I hate mornings. It never seemed to bother Nia though. I swear she takes energy to a whole new level. I dressed quickly, knowing Nia would have a melt down if I made us late again. I throw my hair up in a neat bun and put my mascara and lipstick on. I meet Nia in the living room with my coffee already in her hand and looking like she had just stepped off the runway. "I need to know how you have so much energy" I grumbled. "I eat healthily." She winks as she opens the door for us. "You eat what I eat" I grumbled again. I pout to myself as we got into the car, wanting to run back inside and jump back into my warm cozy bed. "So guess what?" Nia beamed at me. I looked at her for an answer. "Oh come on Haley, it's Thursday and we have the three weekend off. This is the last day and night until Monday." "Yeah, and I plan to sleep for both days of it too." I grumbled again. Nia giggles and proceeds to tell me her big news. "So, you remember I told you about my brother Hunter?" How could I forget her whole family thinks he is God or something. "Yeah." "Well, he is home, he will be at the bar tonight. I'm so excited." Great! I thought to myself. Another one of Nia's family members will secretly hate me. Nia's brother Nate and cousin Amy hardly talk to me and her uncle Tom, well, he barely tolerates me. So yeah, I'm not as excited as Nia to meet the one and only Hunter Combs. We arrive at the firm and of course are instructed to grab coffee for the partners. We do as we're told and are immediately told to go organize files. "This is the most boring job in America, Nia. Why did we choose to stay here? We are attorneys, not secretaries." "We just need to prove we're willing to start at the bottom." She smiles. We make our way to the file room and go to work. It went by to fast to say the least. The room was awful and not one file where it should have been. Now it's time to go to the bar. Just one more night and I get to sleep, I think to myself as we rush home to change our clothes and head for the bar. Once we arrived, I notice a Harley in the lot. I assume it's Hunters but say nothing. I won't lie, it did peak my interest. I have never known anyone who rode a Harley. Maybe he is a fun family member, like Nia says. We walked in and I went straight to the bar and began cutting lemon and lime, getting the bar set up for opening. I ignore the screams and laughter and just try to focus on my job. Then I hear, who the f**k is that and why the f**k is she behind my bar. My eyes went wide as I looked up and saw a monster of a man staring daggers right at me. Nia steps in front of him, getting his attention back on her, and explains to him that I am her friend and she gave me the job after we graduated from college. What being an attorney doesn't pay enough, he spit at both of us, he said as he stormed into the back office, where I could hear him screaming at Tom, Nate. Yeap, I was right. Yeah, one more family member who already hates me and I haven't even said a word yet.
