A blinding white light flooded the room.
When Luo Wei opened her eyes again, everything before her had changed. Her computer desk was gone, replaced by a long table laden with trays of spices. The pungent aroma of the spices, mingled with a damp draft, rushed into her nostrils, almost making her relive her days as an international student in Europe. Back then, to earn money, she had worked every night at a Western restaurant, grinding a large basin of spices day after day. Later...
"Luo Wei!"
Startled by the voice, Luo Wei jerked her head up and looked around. This was a classroom styled in the late Gothic architecture of the European Middle Ages. The arched windows were tall, the walls thick, and the floor cold and damp. A crystal chandelier with an intricate design hung from the ceiling.
Seated in the room was a group of twelve- or thirteen-year-old boys and girls. At the front table stood a blonde man in his late thirties or early forties, appearing to be a teacher.
"Luo Wei!" the blonde man called again, his voice stern. "Please stand up and answer my question."
He stared intently at Luo Wei, his eyes flickering with undisguised suspicion.
Suspicion?
Luo Wei’s pupils contracted. A surge of immense panic rose in her chest, and unfamiliar emotions instantly invaded her mind. Along with the churning emotions came flashes of fragmented memories.
She remembered now—the original owner of this body had impersonated a noble lady to enroll in the academy. In the process, she had offended a true noble lady while fighting over a dormitory room. The scene unfolding now was that noble lady’s revenge; she had seen through the original owner's identity and wanted her to be exposed during the very first class of the semester.
The blonde man was the professor for this course, Professor Phil. It was he who had followed the noble lady’s suggestion to call on the original owner.
This was a Potions class, currently focusing on the basic spices commonly used by the nobility. The question he wanted her to answer was also related to these spices. However, the original owner had never even touched such expensive spices. Just hearing the question had nearly scared her soul out of her body, let alone standing up to answer.
As for why she was so terrified—it was because commoners impersonating nobles, once discovered, would be subjected to brutal torture and then hanged in the streets!
Thinking of the agonizing tortures of the Middle Ages, Luo Wei drew a sharp breath. She forced herself to calm down, stood up, and looked at Phil. "My apologies, Professor Phil. I was distracted. Could you please repeat the question?"
A sneer came from the right front. A lackey sitting next to the noble lady mocked, "I don't think she was distracted; I think she simply doesn't know, does she?"
Following her words, a rustle of whispering broke out in the classroom. If she doesn't even recognize basic spices, is Luo Wei really a noble?
"Quiet!" Professor Phil tapped the table and looked back at Luo Wei. "Luo Wei, please identify the spices on the table and briefly state their uses."
"Very well." Luo Wei lowered her eyes, her gaze returning to the spice tray.
Dill, Sweet Basil, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary... they were all the most common seasonings in Western cuisine. These spices might have been expensive hundreds of years ago, but in the modern era centuries later, they were grown all over the world and had long since become very cheap.
She hoped that in this world, the names of these spices had not changed.
Steadying herself, she reached out to move the spices, reciting their names and functions one by one.
"Dill—pungent and sweet, can treat stomach pain and insomnia when cooked. Sweet Basil—can be eaten as a garnish."
"Parsley—a seasoning herb, can be eaten raw. Sage—strongly aromatic, used for cooking or as a fragrance enhancer."
"Vanilla pod—the seed pod of the vanilla orchid, uniquely fragrant and rich, used for food, flavoring, or as a fixative."
"And the one at the very bottom—"
Luo Wei pushed aside the leafy herbs and saw a yellow, resinous lump. Her heart eased slightly. It seemed that noble lady, Athena, wasn't one hundred percent certain she wasn't a noble; otherwise, she wouldn't have used this item to test her.
"This is Frankincense, the resin of Boswellia trees. It has analgesic and antiseptic properties."
She withdrew her finger and looked up. "Professor, is my answer correct?"
The classroom was deathly silent.
Luo Wei frowned. Was it possible the names of these spices were different from what she knew?
After a long moment, she finally heard Professor Phil’s voice. "You have... eaten all of these spices?"
"Professor, aren't these spices very common seasonings?" Luo Wei smiled. "However, I haven't eaten Frankincense. It is a medicinal fragrance, better suited for incense and essential oils."
Phil knew this, of course; he was of noble birth himself. But even for him, it was impossible to use these spices so extravagantly as mere cooking seasonings. And then there was the Frankincense—it was an extremely precious spice, usually reserved for sacrifices because legend said it was the scent closest to the gods... Wait, Frankincense wasn't part of the basic medicinal materials.
Professor Phil snapped back to his senses and walked quickly to Luo Wei’s table. "May I see your spice tray?"
Luo Wei took a half-step back. "Please."
Phil picked up the yellow resinous lump from the tray, held it under his nose, and inhaled. His expression shifted several times.
"It is indeed Frankincense," he said finally, setting the resin down. "I may have accidentally misplaced it while organizing the materials. My sincere apologies, Luo Wei. How about I add ten points to your grade for this class?"
"Thank you, Professor."
Phil returned to the lectern with the Frankincense, looking down to write something in his notes.
Just as Luo Wei sat down, the noble lady in front suddenly turned around. She scrutinized Luo Wei with her icy blue eyes, as if evaluating an object of uncertain value.
Luo Wei met her gaze and noticed something interesting. This noble lady, named Athena, had dazzlingly long blonde hair—which happened to be the exact same shade as Professor Phil’s.
The rest of the class was quiet and somewhat boring; the students were drowsy. Luo Wei kept her eyes lowered as if in a daze, but she was actually sorting through the extra memories in her mind.
The original owner of this body was originally a young fisherwoman. Her village had been massacred by pirates, and she had escaped, only to be rescued by several knights. One kind female knight had given her a letter of recommendation for the academy and some gold coins, telling her to come here to study.
The original owner was strikingly beautiful. On her way to the academy, she had nearly been r***d several times. To protect herself, she had decided to impersonate a noble.
However, that impulsive decision had cost the original owner her life.
In those memories, because the original owner had failed to answer Phil’s questions today, she had aroused the suspicion of her classmates. They notified the Inquisitors of the Church, who threw her into the Church's dungeon. Unable to withstand the interrogation, she confessed her true identity.
Once her identity was exposed, the original owner was first tied with ropes by soldiers and paraded through the streets for public mockery. Later, she was hung on the city walls for seven full days, enduring the curses of countless people. Commoners threw filth and rotten vegetables at her, and her former classmates came to watch her misery, pointing and whispering with looks of pure disdain.
Finally, she was sent to the gallows at the vegetable market and hanged.
Before she died, she sacrificed her soul to an Evil God, hoping that the god would change this world and her future.
Luo Wei didn't know if the Evil God had received the sacrifice, but she had traveled into the body on the very day the exposure was meant to happen.
With her eyes half-closed, Luo Wei recalled information about the school.
Syria Magic Academy—established through joint funding from multiple nations. Its educational philosophy was quite advanced: dedicated to breaking down class prejudices and cultivating the most elite talents in the entire continent.
Unfortunately, although the academy constantly emphasized that "enrollment is open to all regardless of status," the nobles here still deeply discriminated against commoners. The two groups were as distinct as fire and water, and no one took that philosophy seriously.
The original owner had entered the noble students' field of vision by faking her status, but her habits were incompatible with theirs. It was only a matter of time before she was caught.
Today’s test was merely an appetizer.
At the very least, Athena would not let her off so easily. In the original owner’s memory, Athena had already sent people to investigate her background at this point; it was just that the original owner had exposed herself so quickly that those backup plans were never needed.
